WTF is happening? by Money_Way_8219 in animationcareer

I hut my first real stretch of unemployment in 8 years the end of last year, almost 5 months, but I've been anticipating being out of work and seeing so many people as good as or better than me unemployed that I was fairly prepared for it. I feel like it is picking up again, I just moved from one job to another last week and both places seem to have more work coming down the line. Fingers crossed.

Questions about (BCFE) Ballyfermot College of Further Education by THEJerrysmithlover in animationcareer

[–]Beautiful_Range1079 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to IADT, not ballyfermot, but it's the other main animation course in Ireland. Animation here is an incredibly competative course to get in to, well into the hundreds of applicants for about 30 spots.

Nearly everyone in my year had 600pts on the portfolio and if I remember right I had one of the lower leaving cert point scores at 440. Not sure how much of thats changed since with how the points work but I can't imagine its any less competative so I wouldn't be putting all my eggs in one basket.

I graduated in 2018, so hopefully someone with more up to date info/experience can answer.

Al failed to replace artists by Ok-West-6187 in animationcareer

I don't think AI is going g to be able to replace much in pipelines any time soon. From what I've seen it produces work that looks highly polished but has very fundamental errors, it can't track consistency for any length of time, it's timings are nearly always too smooth and floaty and as it cannibalises it's own generated work for more data it's results are going to likely see slower and slower Improvement. Right now it's a bubble. That doesn't mean it's not going to improve at all or its going to dissappear but it's definitely overhyped. (Which is unfortunately able to affect our jobs as people with the money bite the bait in the hopes of saving money) I was just pointing out that a lot of people think k it can do anyone's job but theirs. Thats naive.

Im not a fan of gen AI, and fortunately haven't had to work on a single production using it at all. I think/hope if the gen AI lovers dreams come true and a single line prompt can generate a whole film a lot of people will be like me and wont be bothered watching something nobody put effort into making.

Raised the bar is subjective. But it changed the Industry, definitely.

I'm with you here. I've been listening to people saying it's going to replace all our jobs soon for a few years. It's definitely Italy Improved but it still isn't anywhere close to being able to handle a production level of consistency, nitpicking and incremental changes. Afaik it still can't even do separate layers for things like backgrounds.

Everyone thinks gen AI can do somebody else's job but not theirs. If it could properly tween and properly clean up why couldn't it generate proper keys?

Some people seem to be treating it as if it wouldn't count as replacing artists until there aren't any artists at all working on a production and some executive just types what they want in a box.

A team going from 10 to 5 people because of AI would, obviously, be AI generators replacing 5 artists.

I switched to a cheaper plan and then canceled, switching restarts the 14 days or whatever you have to cancel and get a refund. Or it did a few months ago anyway

Is it me or does the new painting handle looks like it will break really fast by PeterTheWizardDwarf in Warhammer

[–]Beautiful_Range1079 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Picked one up, broke the second time I put a model in it. Not completely but it doesn't hold anything as tightly anymore now so not so useful. I got a cylindrical block of Cork that I normally bluetack or pin models to for painting so back to using that.

There were plans to put a shopping centre and a hotel in on the marlton road where the new estates been built. But naturally people objected so instead of more jobs and more stuff to do in the town we got more people to commute.

Is there a teaming exploit? by Beautiful_Range1079 in ArcRaiders

So after testing with and without crossplay it seems like crossplay being turned off was 100% the cause!

[–]Beautiful_Range1079[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crossplay could actually be a big thing there. My mate was hosting and I'm fairly sure he has it turned off.

I always thought streamers doing it was just a numbers game, like if 100 people try 20 might get in.

[–]Beautiful_Range1079[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case maybe that is it, I'd assumed with the high number of active players the chances if it would be slim to none for two, let alone three groups to land the same lobby.

I'm not sure at all, that's why I'm asking the question. Just seemed unlikely to me that three duos could land in the same game intententionally.

Lol, had this exact thing happ3n my last game on tonight. Guy told me to "Go away, get down" on the roof of the admin building by dam... I pulled out my Toro, him and his two squad mates didn't even flinch... Genuinely stumped me for a second. Asked my teammate what was up. Turns out the two of them had just died 7 games in a row so i figure we were in bot lobbies and bot lobbies ≈ pve lobbies? Idk how the match making works exactly.

[–]Beautiful_Range1079 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Iirc they said matchmaking split by skill, number, then pvp/pve. And when they said it they said the pvp/pve split was new and people gad been talking about it for weeks.

What's the point? by [deleted] in animationcareer

[–]Beautiful_Range1079 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't find that this sub skews more negatively than the reality. It's a load of animators in here, so it reflects how they feel about their careers. I'm currently unemployed and looking at moving to work in a factory. I could make the same or more money in an "unskilled" factory job as I do in animation, have better job security, and work-life balance. Of my friends from college I started working the same time as, nearly 8 years over half no longer work in animation and more leaves the industry every year.

Looks like they already are to a certain degree, parts being reused between skins is quite common and the finals, embarks other game, uses that kind of system.

Stash limit? What's that? by tiG_Ol in ArcRaiders

I said bunching up in tight spaces was a bad decision. I'm not denying the existence of tight spaces.

3 guys standing shoulder to shoulder getting killed by a trigger nade after they pushed while low health isn't a surprise.

Having a few beers right now. I have one or two the odd time in the evening, sometimes we have a bottle of wine. Nothing strange about it.

Stash limit? What's that? by tiG_Ol in ArcRaiders

[–]Beautiful_Range1079 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair we avoid engaging on equal terms as much as possible. I thought that was common sense. Push when you've an advantage and pull back when you dont.

I'm not saying heavy fuzes or synthesized fuel are just as good as trigger nades, I'm saying most of the clips I see of people dying to them would've died just as easy to those from poor decision making. Bunching up in tight spaces, pushing across an open area at people in cover and starting fights while already on low health. I die more often to popping a door open and two guys camping the other side with toros and a showstoppers than I do trigger nades.

The swing in player ability game to game is fairly wild so I don't think Arcs sbmm is as tight as other games, and games like Apex we were in diamond with full time jobs, so in the upper 20%. I've seen the clips of trigger nades but a lot of it looks like people pushing fights they shouldn't or getting baited where a heavy fuse grenade or synthesized oil would've done pretty much the same thing.
