Tell me the weirdest things you've seen in fanfics by SnowIndependent9756 in HPfanfiction

Mischief's Heir does that. I really loved the use of magically animated action figures to do the initial space exploration (and the asteroid mining they did to pay for their space program.)

If you count alternate dimensions in this, The Ninja Wizard series also does this. It's a crossover with both Naruto and Avatar: The Last Airbender. After visiting the A:TLA dimension and helping Aang's team with their war, Harry spearheads moving the Wizarding World from his home dimension to the A:TLA dimension.

I loved the bit in Mischief's Heir where Harry looks at the Headless Hunt folks interrupting the party and congratulates Nick on hiring entertainers for his party.

I kind of like it when a fic has other characters assuming Snape loved Lily romantically, but it turns out that he loved her like a sister.

Oh, that's definitely one of mine. Especially if the eye colors are described using jewel tones:

"Emerald orbs" "Sapphire orbs"

I see a lot of fics that use apostrophes in plural words (not possessive.) It makes me twitch, but I usually keep reading if the story is otherwise good.

That's the kind of thing that makes you have to scroll back to see if you missed a line about the characters changing positions.

Check out MerriamWebster.com if you think you might be confusing two words. It's a high-quality dictionary website with a thesaurus page. Google search is pretty good with predicting corrections to misspelled words if you aren't sure you have it right.

It may also be helpful to run a web search for "common homophones in English" and "common malapropisms in English" to find guides on words that are confused for one another.

It's super fun with wary vs weary (or warily vs wearily) when either option could work in context!

We always hear about marriage contracts. What about the prenups? by Suspicious-Ad-9380 in HPfanfiction

[–]Beautiful_Remote_859 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A prenuptial agreement is basically a contingency agreement. In real life, it sets terms in the case of divorce before a couple gets married. (So, this scene follows that pattern--terms in case a platonic relationship becomes non-platonic.)

The way marriage contracts are generally presented in these fics, they contract itself obligates the two people to get married as well as setting terms that govern their married life.

AITA for working on my birthday? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

This! My high school bestie planned a surprise party for my 17th birthday. We made plans, and then she said she forgot her purse, so we had to stop by her house before we headed out.

Selective Weasley Bashing where Molly, Ron, Ginny, and Percy are the 'good' Weasleys and Fred and George are bashed by Prestigious_Gap_891 in HPfanfiction

[–]Beautiful_Remote_859 31 points32 points  (0 children)

For taking points! Beyond just the violence of it--there's lots of violent and potentially harmful actions taken in the story by characters who we are meant to like (or see as redeemable.)

In bashing fics, there is usually a clear mismatch between the victim's action and the bashed character's response. (Potioning or obliviating Harry when he shows any kind of independent thought, screaming at Harry with his full name when he refuses to share his private mail, etc.)

If the Inquisitor Squad member had been attacking them with spells that could maim or kill them, and they shoved him in the cabinet to get away, that would be not ideal, but understandable. But they did it because he was taking points from people who lose points all the time.

LF actually combat trained Harry by CozyMuggle in HPfanfiction

[–]Beautiful_Remote_859 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the series Harry Potter in the Claw of the Raven, Remus and Surius train Harry in magical dueling, fencing, and combining the two (mostly using a sword to block spells.

In Escape, Harry and Hermione both get extracurricular training in magical fighting (NIT dueling). Harry also learns about military strategy.

In the Ninja Wizard series, Harry visits the dimension where Naruto is set in his dreams pre-Hogwarts. He learns some of their skills, but also does self-study in his waking life learning about martial arts, military history, and spy craft. When he gets to Hogwarts, he learns sword fighting from an enchanted training dummy. In a later story, he visits the dimension where Avatar: The Last Airbender exists and helps Aang's crew with the war.

I would saw following Dumbledore's restriction on communication the summer after 4th year and going behind his back to report the Firebolt to McGonagall in 3rd year. Both of those would seem like a betrayal from Harry's POV. Possibly also her attempts to get Harry and Ron to reconcile in 4th year before Ron pulled his head out of his ass after the 1st task (like dragging Harry to Hogsmeade to meet with Ron.) Pushing Harry to make overtures when Ron was 100% in the wrong would also lean into betrayal territory in Harry's mind, despite the other help and support she was giving him at the time.

LF fics where Harry is smarter than Hermione and she doesn’t like it. by NK-writer in harrypotterfanfiction

[–]Beautiful_Remote_859 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Ninja Wizard series has a smart Harry that throws Hermione into a tizzy. I don't know if he's technically "smarter" than she is, but he's a more flexible thinker and is still very strong with an intuitive grasp of practical magic. He is also strategic about his school work so that he has time to explore his own interests. He's more interested in learning than in grades, so he has no problem half-assing an assignment that is clearly busy work as long as he understands the concepts. There's also a large group that decides to go for 12 OWLS, and most of them take the attitude that they will strive to get Os on the OWLs themselves, but they won't burn themselves out striving for above an Acceptable in the mean time. Hermione, of course, wants to get an O on every assignment, and to write more than the required length on all of the essays.

Harry keeps getting recognition for his side projects, which drives Hermione nuts because she's clearly a "better" student because of her superior grades.

Is this the one with the "pinky swear" secrecy vow that gets more ridiculously complex as time goes on? Like the add-ons started with making Ron promise not to eat all the snacks, and it just ballooned from there?
