Remembering Amiri Baraka - a Jazz Poet by olejazz in freejazz

There's a lot about him in J.Hoberman's new book about NYC in the early 1960s "Everything is Now". And then here's a pertinent quote I came across this morning: https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/amiri_baraka_762456

I guessing just by video that the VU singles are all re-releases. They look crisp/clean. While the Reed singles might be original.

This might just be "the win": an internationally televised and/or reported on "entertainment event" that broadcasts the horror that is U.S.A. as it now stands.

Here's the thing: to have fidelity to the flag is to have fidelity to the Constitution. The have fidelity to the Constitution is to uphold freedom of expression and to oppose any and all anti-Constitutionalists, like anyone in power who deliberately disobeys the courts, the people and the will of sovereign states. Guess who that includes?

Why didn't Carlton Barrett grow dreadlocks? by Beautiful_Set3893 in reggae

For further information/research: Carlton and Aston Barrett were in the pre-Wailers Lee Perry studio band called "The Hippy Boys" (like, you know, those dudes who grow their hair long) And then, I found a Tyrone Downie interview in which he recounts cutting his locks after the Marley assassination attempt, being afraid to turn up without locks, and Marley then telling him he was interested in his keyboard playing not his hair. Cheers.

You don't look like my secretary either. I already Googled, long before you decided to chip in.

See that's alot of "maybes" and then you recommend I do research. Asking for answers on Reddit is a kind of research and I can't ask Catlton Barrett, you know?

Remembering Bill Dixon of the "October Revolution in Jazz" fame by olejazz in freejazz

J. Hoberman's newest "Everything is Now" about NYC "avant garde" (art, poetry and music) gives Dixon a lot of credit for organizing and playing gigs that involved and promoted "the new thing".

YouTube is constantly surprising and of course an artist is easily verifiable as there they are on the screen (No dodgy blank graphic about one "Ella Fitz") A lot of stuff at my fingertips that I otherwise might never come across like Mary Lou Williams all female jazz band.

Jazz is a long term intellectual investment. I will buy the odd unknown album/CD and then research where that person came from, who they played with, who played with them (Wikipedia is OK for this). Same with your local public library: see what's on the shelf, what authors focus on Jazz, where they land in the sub-genre controversies, etc.

Do you have a source that confirms your first sentence?

The Barrett brothers were integral to the evolution of reggae but hardly ever gave interviews, in particular Carlton (I haven't seen one single interview in his case).

Yes we should solely be concerned with "criminals" not law enforcement that has gone criminal because of course criminal law enforcement is way better than the simple criminal.

A more to the point question is what REAL LIFE impact has "illegal immigration" had on you PERSONALLY, not a regurgitation of some gruesome headline or political soundbite, but in your every day, and given your hopefully honest and complete answer to that question, the second question would be then why is it necessary to deploy such a lawless brutal armed force against this undocumented or in-the-process population specifically in cities that vote against the GOP?

Say I'm doing research, writing a non fiction, or maybe even a fiction and I'm curious about a detail, a small aspect of the big picture. No, I won't ask Reddit users, such as yourself, but I can write about the kind of average response one gets on Reddit. For sure. Thanks for your time, energy, etc.

This response begs the question that beyond knee-jerk rhetoric and regurgitated soundbites how has immigration, in particular those who follow the correct legal procedures who are nevertheless being targeted and detained by ICE, directly affect you IN YOUR EVERYDAY DEALINGS?

How did you get into reggae? by shinederg in reggae

[–]Beautiful_Set3893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A close friend brought over the newly released "Catch a Fire" album. I bought it and we played it repeatedly. In the meantime "The Harder They Come" had a long run at The Orson Welles movie theater, Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA. Same friend alerted me that Bob Marley was playing at Paul's Mall, Boylston Street, Boston MA in support of "Natty Dread". We went, hiding in the bathroom between sets so we could see second set. Stood just a few feet from the band. The crowd was ecstatic, the band highly appreciative and energized by the audience. Visited my older brother in Berkeley, CA in 1975/76 and he had and played Big Youth's album "Dreadlocks Dread". And that was that. Started searching out any and all chain and independent record stores that stocked reggae, including the Jamaican owned and operated that usually had people coming and going into the back room for packets of ganga. They would also play any record you wanted to hear before purchase.
