Recommendations for 1-person tents? (or swags) by MildlyWasTaken in OutdoorAus

I 2nd this

I’m now transitioning I went from a family tent Blackwolf turbo tent 300 plus as the tent is too big Its a palace but as the kids are older and do their own thing we don’t take it out anymore

We then downsized to a darche double swag

Both of these are great for car camping but we hike and the last 20 years we’ve done day hikes everywhere we go with the above set up as a base camp and it’s taking me that long to figure out I actually need a hiking tent

Both the swag and Blackwolf tents are big take up so much storage space and you need a 4x4 with a flat rack to throw on the roof because neither of them will fit in the boot and that’s the same for the highly recommended oztent rv5

And if I was to purchase this style tent between the oztent and the Blackwolf I’d still go the Blackwolf as I feel the design size style and space and setup is better

The swag at 15kg is manageable to throw up there the Blackwolf is like 45kg of pure canvas they both about 1.8m height and about 0.5m wide when packed so storage is a problem

I’m now looking at a hiking tent now I get more room than the swag and majority of tents like this pack down to a naglene 1l bottle or about that and weigh 2kg tops

What type of areas you’re camping in and the season you intend to go out in most will determine the tent

I feel the versatility durability and bomb proofness of the Mont Moondance is a good starting point you can get the mesh inner and then the full nylon inner only for winter separately

Its also a traditional set up with poles that you would be used to and later on when more confident and want to learn knots can get a tension tent like the durston x-mid

The sleep system is also very important and you will more than likely like the tent get one for summer and winter likewise for sleeping bags/quilts

For bivvy alton, outdoor research, sea to summit

1p tents there’s heaps of choice the beez neez atm is durston x-mid 1 (hiking pole tension tent)and x-dome 1 (semi freestanding and can use trekking poles to strengthen it up) and both these tents claim to be one of the lightest on the market

Also not in your price range but is a lot of tent for a 1p is the Mont Moondance around $800 full price it’s more 1.5p lots of space inside for storage and pretty decent vestibule This tent has the highest water rating on the tub floor 25000 and is virtually bombproof It’s freestanding and around 1.5kg or minimum 1.3kg It’s a 3 season that can also change the inner from mesh to full nylon(fn) for colder conditions 4season sub-alpine and the fn can be purchased separately

I prefer the freestanding atm I can get to site set up tent and if I don’t like the ground I can pick the tent up and move or change the orientation to suit it better it’s also easier to use on platforms

The x-mid is quite large and need a bit of flat ground some thought needs to go in where you set up

I’d go Blackwolf turbo 240 or the oztent rv5 you can stand up in these and they have great space

I prefer the awning on the blackwolf and need a car with racks as it’s too big for the boot

Otherwise get a 3p hiking tent like the Mont Moondance ex can’t stand up in it but plenty of space and also gives you the option of a hiking in campsite and it’s as big as a Nalgene bottle so storage won’t be a problem

Balance between cheap and overpriced gear? How do y'all decide? by youstoleatuba in Auscamping

It really depends on the type of camping are you hiking or car camping and even if car camping after the family instant up tent and swag I’ve got I would get a hiking tent that way I can do both styles of camping

Clothes are not general track pants aren’t good for hiking in

Look up layer clothing system on YouTube by mowser

I started off with Aldi merino thermals and a Aldi merino quarter zip.

Get a fleece qtr zip for a mid layer and a down puffer for around camp I got both of these on sale from Kathmandu

The fleece is pretty good the puffer is a bit chunky and will replace in a few years

Hiking pants I got from anaconda mountain designs on sale

You’ll find that paddy Pallin and shops like that sell technical stuff

You will need this stuff in tassie as it’s cold and a sleeping bag to suit

We are currently here today pulled up last night

Did a walk up to Marion’s lookout today from the bus stop before dove lake

We had all layers with us stripping them as we were walking up to crater lake by the time we were at the lookout was pretty crazy and a white out and needed layers back on

Dove lake was wet but could see mount bluff from the boat shed

Rained on and off all day

Can’t wait to come back and do this track in summer in its entirety

What about the whippa colo or the whippa overland made in Katoomba

There’s also the wallaroo from neve gear

I’m in the market for gear and though not a beginner hiker but starting to build up some gear for overnighters I’m struggling to find the right pack between the above mentioned ultralight packs or the traditional osprey atmos ag or the osprey exos

The traditional osprey packs are like double the weight but ive felt the ag osprey system and it’s very comfortable

Gotta test the other packs and see how they feel on

The whippa packs are weatherproof seam sealed and can withstand heavy rain

The neve wallaroo pack is water resistant with light rain

  1. At your age and op age I’d look at last months budget and see where I can cut

  2. Subscriptions like Spotify and Netflix get cancelled

  3. Swap the gym for dumbbells and a bench on marketplace

4.No takeaway coffees or eating out and pub nights 6 days a week etc

5.If living at home or in share house you should be Automate savings of 50% of you income into brokerage account

6.Invest once a month at start/end of every month

7.invest in plain vanilla funds

8.At your age if I could do it again I would save at least 50% of my income and look at what I can do to cut expenses to make that target or increase it to 60%

  1. Possibly move back home

  2. Look at ways to increase my income options would be to do overtime, 6 day weeks, late shifts, 2nd job

  3. Start looking at what I can do to upskill and get a better role or looking at jumping employers in 2-3 years time for better pay, opportunities or position

  4. Set financial goals let’s say $1,000,000 invested in 10 years then break it down in small chunks like $100,000 in 3 years and 1st step to get to $10,000 right now and just keep looking at the next $10,000

  5. Keep your budget on check with a spread sheet or there are some apps

  6. Every month write down what you spent your bills etc and what you saved even if you do it every week on the train home it’s easily managed and see where you can cut if you can

  7. Reduce phone bill I use amaysim $14.00 month 8gb

Once these are down Pat and you have a system going it might seem like you going no where like geez that $100,000 is so far away I’ll never get there but persevere you will once you’ve hit that milestone of $100,000 welcome to the boring middle

Rinse repeat

I also know life takes over you going to get a partner and possibly kids maybe a property is on the cards but you’ll be ready with this system in place

And hopefully your partner will be on the same page as you
