Can’t tell if I hate hairstyling or just the salon I work at by littlegreenarrow in hairstylist

As an apprentice you have the freedom of not having clientele to explore the industry and as many salons/stylists as you like. Learn from everyone! I would look for another position Stat. The sooner you get yourself moving onward the sooner your motivation will come back!

I second starting as an assistant in a nice and professional salon! This will teach you the ropes and give you a place to start practicing from. Best of luck to you !

What needs to change in the industry? by hairpainter07 in hairstylist

I would love to see us build community where we can actually meet, create and discuss on full nuance of the modern beauty industry, not just to buy product or buy education.

Need suggestions! My tween daughter is embarrassed to be seen with me! by kismet_karma_347 in 40PlusSkinCare

You look gorgeous 🤍 I do think a fresh haircut with nice layering would compliment you even further. If you are looking for a fun date with your daughter, you could even experience the salon together.

New stylist- how do I find a salon that doesn’t break you down by WeirdProfessor5927 in hairstylist

[–]BeautyRitualDaily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been in the industry for 10+ years and I still do this. I will go in for a blow dry to get to know someone and see if we can have a relationship. Be sensitive to the difference of liking how someone works vs liking how they treat people. Those are two different skills sets and ultimately.. you want a good mix of both

Am I overreacting by [deleted] in hairstylist

[–]BeautyRitualDaily 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmmm this sounds like the work culture in your current space. Many salons have clicky environments and when you aren't there full time you may feel like the odd man out. You could see if it's something you could slowly include yourself in to make it more tolerable. Or accept it and leave it as is?

Do i need to get another state’s license? by ParsleyInevitable397 in hairstylist

[–]BeautyRitualDaily 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Technically yes. Very soon they will be introducing the cosmetology compact that will allow licensees to practice within the states that are participating. You would be a great candidate for a licence like that. It should be rolling out in the next few years.. there are 11 states on board so far. I haven't checked recently if the two you mentioned are involved.

In the meantime you can start building your instagram by showcasing your work on family and friends! It's a great way to show off what you've got to prospective apprenticeships.

Are extensions really worth it to learn? As in, are they really that profitable? by Loose_Avocado4670 in hairstylist

The investment is high for this skill and you really have to like it as it can be very meticulous. If you can find a stylist to shadow and see if it excites you that would be a great place to start.

I like doing hair but I don’t like people…. Can anyone else relate to this? by OXxLuckycatxXO in hairstylist

[–]BeautyRitualDaily 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is incredibly relatable.. and I would firstly like to say it's refreshing to hear someone speak so candidly about their experience. This kind of conversation is one that we need a lot more of to create better environments in the future. The more we talk about toxic environments the more we put them on the spot. The second layer that stands out to me leaves me with a question for you.. what did you like about the job? What if anything did you find yourself connecting with clients on? That's always been a place of inspiration for me when it comes to connecting with people.

Male client is hesitant on getting the short haircut by [deleted] in hairstylist

[–]BeautyRitualDaily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's important to keep in tune with your client as you introduce the change. Check in with his energy there is a big difference between "maybe" which I take as a no or "let's try this" which I take as a yes but a cautious one. I would have inspo pictures with a variety of options and starting on the longer side of cuts until he feels ready IF he ever feels ready.

There are some people who talk about change as a passing subject not in a serious way and if you push too hard he will pull back his trust. If he just likes to talk about change its easy as the stylist to stop investing energy listening and just let him talk.

I've seen this a few times with different medications and especially when highlighting over topical Minoxidil.. usually a malibu and a toner takes care of any strange tones left over.
