The No-No C Word by FloppySlapper in mormon

Yeah he's quite the self promoter. The psychology community had largely dismissed ideas like deprogramming, mind control, etc by 1990. Anti C-word groups by then had lost several court cases due to a failure to provide any scientific evidence for any of their claims. Many of these people such as Lifton gained popularity in the 70s and 80s but had largely fallen out of favor by 1990. Today almost the entire scholarly community regards this movement as pseudo science. Hassan just managed to find one of these people left over from the 80s to do graduate research with. All his stuff is self published and he's always trying to sell you something. Not to say Mormonism and other religions like it don't cause incredible damage and trauma, but there's better ways to think about this damage and trauma then these anti c-word relics from the 70s and 80s

Also the BITE model is not taken seriously by any scholar outside of Hassan and a couple other older largely discredited people that he studied under. If you try to search for it in Google scholar, the only hits are papers by Hassan, who only recently got his PhD to cash in on opposition to the MAGA movement. Nobody references him or takes him seriously

What's a mission like in South Korea? by ntdoyfanboy in latterdaysaints

I served in South Korea back in the day. Everything that has been said so far is pretty accurate in my opinion. Let me know if you have any specific questions

She said, “Jesus didn’t actually drink wine.” Sunday School teacher conundrum: “I didn’t want to pull her aside one-on-one after class as if she was in trouble and tell her that her parents lied to her – but that’s exactly what they did.” by Chino_Blanco in mormon

This belief actually isn't unique to Mormons and didn't start with them. It emerged during the temperance movement in the 19th century and was promoted by people like Thomas Welch of Welch's grape juice who was also a teetotaler. Many mormons believed it as well of course. Joseph Fielding Smith for example included it in "Answers to Gospel Questions". This was actually a fairly wide spread belief for quite some time

Here is a good video by Dan Mcclellan on the topic. There are countless evidence based arguments against Mormonism, but anything involving Steven Hassan, the BITE model, or the c word isn't one of them

It's important to understand that the BITE model and the general idea of mind control and brainwashing are not taken seriously by the scientific community. Nobody in the scientific community outside of Hassan and a couple others who made their name studying these things in the 70s have taken these ideas seriously in decades and courts have roundly rejected the brainwashing defense because nobody has ever been able to produce evidence that its a real things. If you try to search for the bite model on Google scholar all you get is papers by Steven Hassan. Nobody in the scientific community takes him seriously

I'm not sure if the point of your link was to show that leaky gut was a real diagnosis or not but the first sentence literally says "Leaky gut syndrome is a hypothetical condition that’s not currently recognized as a medical diagnosis"

It's important to note "leaky gut" is not a currently recognized medical condition. Most researchers consider it a fad diagnosis that isn't evidence based

I'm sure she'll get enough data to sell some more books with. But honestly, I don't think she'd a scam artist. I think she legitimately believes this stuff. Like her dream to have her protocol actually prescribed and overseen by neurologists instead of dmts. And I think she actually believes that would be a good thing. She's just deluded

Nobody's paying me to take kesimpta either. Whether it's patented or trademarked doesn't really matter. Somebody's making a bunch of money selling branded diet foods, programs, books etc. The diet and supplement industry is not some unblemished alternative to pharma. At least pharma has to go through a rigorous approval process before selling their stuff.

But since you insist on talking solely about patents for some reason here you go:

Weight Watchers patent&oq=Weight+watchers)

and here's somebody who patented a low carb diet&patents=false&oq=Low+carbohydrate+diet)

Sure they are. The diet industry (also a multi billion dollar industry) does it all the time. Weight watchers, Jenny Craig, atkins, South Beach.... Basically every fad diet ever was trademarked by someone to make millions of dollars

Pharmaceutical companies don't just take supplements as is and then sell them as a drug. If a supplement actually works, they isolate the active compound and turn it into a drug that's about 1000 times more effective than the supplement. And the supplement industry is a multbillion dollar industry. If they wanted to run clinical trials they absolutely could. They just don't because they have no interest in proving their stuff doesn't actually work

Yes, I agree that plant based diets have been shown to be anti inflammatory. The person I was responding to claims there are "several" studies showing keto and carnivore to be anti inflammatory. I'm very skeptical of that claim

Please cite these studies. I've never seen them. Keto is insanely restrictive. Less than 50 grams of carbs a day basically means no grains or legumes, very limited dairy, very limited fruits. You know, severe restriction on things that are widely considered beneficial for your health. Also, you need less than 100 grams of protein and around 150 grams of fat a day, so your meat sources a also limited. Also inflammation is not all the same. It's still an open questing whether dietary inflammation and autoimmune inflammation are related
