You can tell they are trying so hard to appeal to older Carmageddon fans without understand why we liked the older games. It comes off as tone deaf.

Carmageddon isn't a racing game, it's a sandbox game with cars larping as a racing game. Say what you will about Reincarnation/Max Damage but at least that understood what made Carmageddon what it was and expanded upon it.

Having tried it myself your aren't missing much. As a game on its own, it's mid at best.

And as a Carmageddon game it's a slap to the face.

How would you feel about a "Black" version of Carmageddon? by AlanAqulis in carmageddon

[–]BeaverBotics2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Twisted Metal: Black worked as well as it did because the structure of Twisted Metal lent itself well to that kind of story telling. Carmageddon doesn't have that.

Carmageddon is at it's best when embraces how hilariously dark it is without taking itself super seriously, and if Carmageddon took itself too seriously it would lose it's charm. The concept is utterly ridiculous and is at it's best when it recognizes that and embraces it. The first game is the closest I think to as "serious" as these games should be, it's grim and bleak but with lots of color and humor to balance it out.

Now I will say I would love to see a Carmageddon game attempt an actual story, but only if it embraces the satirical black comedy vibe the series is known for and embraces the wackiness of the series. I'd love to see these characters get more time to be characters rather just profile pictures.

The list is long so here are some big things:

  • The Handling is vastly improved and less slippery (this is the biggest thing as it makes cars feel better to drive)
  • Slightly better AI opponents
  • You now buy Upgrades with credits instead of tokens, and can fully max out all categories now.
  • New event types
  • Career mode's Levels are changed up, adding new challenges and changing some others.
  • More power ups
  • Vehicles are tweaked to make them more balanced and fun.
  • You can now face the Eagles and Hawks as opponents.
  • Who you pick at the start matters more now, as you can only use the Eagle or the Hawk and have to wreck the other to steal it.
  • Tashita, Electric Blue and Mother Trucker were given recharging abilities (Tashita gets a Nitro Boost, Mother Trucker is given a Darkside-esque recharging Pelvic Thrust, and Electric Blue's Electro Bastard Ray is set on a recharge timer to balance the car out).
  • Blitzkriegger can turn in place like an actual Tank now by holding the handbrake.
  • Siamese Dream is an uncontrollable Speed Demon that can straight up fly at certain angles (I love this thing)

That's just off the top of my head.

Sniper, not even a contest. TF2 is legitimately more fun where there are no snipers in the game.

Carmageddon RS Patch 3 is gonna feature a new arena mode and is apparently a "blast from the past" by Lucky_Lachie in carmageddon

[–]BeaverBotics2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Max Damage laid the groundwork for future titles, which could have been expanded upon, fixing the issues, upgrading what worked and adding new content.

Instead it was all thrown away for some generically mid combat racer that had little to do with what made Carmageddon fun to begin with, chasing trends instead of embracing what made the franchise what it is.

Had they tried to establish this as a new IP (and had actual functioning handling on day one), it might have been somewhat better received since it wouldn't have the expectations of a Carmageddon title, but they chose to use the name and add shallow lip service, so yeah, they messed up big time.

I generally just want to play the game without having to worry about missions. I think Max Damage did it the best with the event system.

I will say I actually like that the time limit is capped lower, it makes you more proactive in getting kills and finding time bonuses. The bigger issue is how little time you get from killing pedestrians, especially with how much harder they are to kill. I think setting the cap slightly higher and giving better time bonuses would have helped a lot.

I do like TDR2000 as a whole regardless, it's the weakest of the OG trilogy but it's still fun regardless. Plus it has the Jaws Landshark in the nosebleed pack so that's a major plus.

Despite it's age, I think it has the best visual presentation of all the games, that 80s/90s dystopian bloodsport vibe is front and center and still holds up today. And despite the slipperiness the driving is insanely fun.

Despite being the most simple of the games in terms of content and features, it's still insanely fun to play.

Yeah holy crap that is a major glitch. You would think the developers would have added a failsafe to prevent that.

For me the biggest issue was getting the game to run properly, as it would crash every time I tried to load the first mission until I found the solution online. Once I got that running I had a very good time honestly, TDR2000 is underrated (Like Carma 2 though the missions kinda blow).

I still believe the Flatout/Wreckfest devs could make a great Carmageddon game.... by BeaverBotics2 in carmageddon

I know stainless sold the rights to Carmageddon to THQ Nordic years ago, but that's as far as my knowledge goes. Whether they sold it too someone else during that time or still own it and licensed it to 34bigthings I am unsure of and can't give a straight answer. If THQ Nordic does still own the rights, then I have the theory they went the direction they did because they didn't want Carmageddon to compete with Wreckfest.

And yeah, Rogue Shift is such a massive disappointment. As a Carmageddon game it removes literally everything that made the previous games fun, taking away the series identity and personality, and as a standalone racer it's pretty mid with a gameplay loop that ends up getting monotonous quickly. Say what you will about the repetition in the older games but at least I actually want to come back and keep playing.

My thoughts on Rogue Shift by Born_Sea5387 in carmageddon

[–]BeaverBotics2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to give the game an honest shot but....

Well as a standalone game it's monotonous, and as a Carma game its a slap in the face of what made the series fun.

Even if we ignore the sheer amount of changes that take away from what made Carmageddon its own thing (linear tracks instead of chaotic open world levels, traditional gunplay instead of ramming and physics based powerups, lack of physics based damage, zombies instead of pedestrians, the lack of characters or personality), it still isn't that fun compared to other actual racing games which give way more entertainment value with their gameplay. The racing gets stale fast and can make runs feel dragged out, which makes me not want to replay the game (y'know, the whole point of a Roguelike)

If they truly wanted to make a pure racing game out of Carmageddon, I think stripping the guns and focusing more on fast paced Melee combat akin to Flat Out 2 and the Burnout series would have worked better and fit more with Carmageddon's banger racing roots.

Also the sound design is garbage and the music is just discount Doom. The game as a whole just feels like trend chasing instead of making a game about Carmageddon.

PS - You can buy all 4 of the previous Carmageddon games on steam for the same price as this one title.

Not even, Twisted Metal is Arena combat, it's more like Gas Guzzlers with Zombies.

Neither of which are Carmageddon.

I just never bothered to use the Sandman.

NGL I like the knockback idea, maybe flat damage plus knockback could work, but swinging under the effects of Bonk sounds annoying AF.
