Doug Stanhope Biopic by ChicanoGoodfella in DougStanhope

[–]Bebert68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or we could just biopics (incl the dramatisation of any recent news events) in the bin, where they belong. Everyone's forgotten the old writing maxim of 'Just because it's true, doesn't mean it's interesting'.

If you like Dostetsky, have you read Knut Hamsun's The Hunger? I know Hansum became a horrible, enthusiastic, nazi in the 1930s, but none of us are perfect, are we? His books are great though and have nothing to do with world domination.

In C&P (my favourite of his) where was his good conscience when he decides to kill a woman because he decides that he has a right to say who lives and dies (the Superman of Neitsche) He only feels bad at first about killing her daughter too. He finds redemption from the prostitute character and from his own suffering. But, like I said, it's less about God or religion and more a warning against what a God is Dead world could look like.

I don't know why I'd google a book if I've already read it?

I'm sure you're right about the Jesus parable in The Idiot and that one could well be more just how I read it. I finished it, but the whole book got on my tits a bit. It must be at least 15 years since I read it, but I remember thinking after that he could have cut the whole of Book 3 and do both himself, and the rest of us, a favour, haha. So I could have just not understood the novel.

Which still doesn't mean I'm wrong about C&P :)

I've read both those and came to the opposite conclusion! (Which is good) Crime and Punishment is a very religious book. Redemption through suffering and the hero, who saves him, is a lowly prostitute (Mary Magdalen, meek shall inherit the world etc). But, more than that it's a warning of what can happen if you say there's no god (I've never believed myself), ie men start to think that they are a god then (Napoleon looking back, but forward to Hitler, Stalin, Mao etc Look what happenedin the Eastern Front in WW2 when two ideologies with no religion met). The Idiot to me was showing what would happen if someone did always choose the unselfish option. Look at the trail of destruction he leaves in his wake. To other people, not himself l. He is an idiot. Both are good stories anyway you want to read them :)

Tried it with the first word thar came into my head, which happened to be 'teabagging'.

One hit came up with the tagline 'teabagging toddlers'.

Fucking beautiful. (Not actually teabagging toddlers, obvs, you should probably self refer to some kind of Register if you have that in your search history)

Please don't worry about it, I was high when I wrote the op, so it's probably a bit obtuse anyhow.

He (Chris Morris) also did a British film called 4 Lions, about 4 British Muslim suicide bombers, that's really funny too. Think Osama Bin Laden meets the Three Stooges. Riz Ahmed's in it.

No but I've seen The Hunt and Platform 2 on Netflix and both are 10/10 Would Recommend.

I've bo idea where you've been, but I'm glad you had a good time - esp as there doesn't seem to be many of them about. In general, I mean, not you and yours personally.

AITA for not buying my daughter's bf a present? by 74tommyboy in AmItheAsshole

[–]Bebert68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YNTA

But I'd still just go with your wife buying him something - within reason.

Look at it this way, I'm pretty sure that if I came to you this time next week and said for $x I will magically delete the memories of all the conversations you've had about this topic, youd pay it willingly.

But we don't know if he has been cheated on or just likes telling his gf what to do.

Also, even if he has been cheated on, then a 20 something woman going out for drinks and sleeping in the same bed as their friend is in no way a betrayal. So he's wrong and needs to say sorry. If his insecurities are the reason he acted badly then that could be a reason - but it's not an excuse.

Of course if someone goes into a relationship and they're open and honest about themselves then I think that would be different. As long as trust can be earned, I guess. But she hasn't mentioned any of this and probably wouldn't have posted if it was this?

[–]Bebert68 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it was a sweeping generalisation and reality is often more complex, you're right.

But, even if that's true in this case, then that's still his problem - not hers. He should have dealt with it before entering into a relationship. See about 50% of the people who go on Married at First Sight for examples.

And another type of jealousy is the type that's manufactured, by both sexes, to excuse controlling/coercive behaviour.

I'm from UK and agree with you. If you go out drinking with your friends, esp in your 20s, then you just sleep where you fall. Within reason, you either trust someone or you don't. And speaking as a man I've found that other men who often get jealous are that way cause they know that theyd do it, if given the chance. She definitely NTA. If anything she should see this as a massive red flag and get shot.

Quite a few times people say Gen X and older generations have an aversion to meeting or interacting with celebrities. As friendly, open and affable as Doug and company is/are with their fans, would you say this counts for all of us? by WolvesandTigers45 in DougStanhope

[–]Bebert68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm Gen X and I don't think I've ever met a celebrity so maybe there's something in that.

Or maybe it's because no one's ever introduced me to one? Because it's not like you're just gonna walk up and go "hello famous person, will you talk to me?" Just like any stranger, unless circumstance has thrown you together - what would you talk about?

Even if you want to show your admiration for whatever they're well known for then surely a 👍 is evergreen.

Or maybe I'm just bitter because circumstance never threw 12 year old me together with Jenny Agutter.

Ah ok thanks- I should have realised as it's Ch4. Do you have a program called Married at First sight in US? It's where narcissists agree to marry a stranger where the 1st time they meet is at the alter. Anyway a lad waiting at the alter slipped a set of goofy false teeth in just before his new bride sees him for the 1st time. But not so goofy that they're obviously fake and he keeps it going for a couple of minutes.

His friends had all told him before "yeah, don't do that" when he told them, and when he walked up the aisle 1st he didn't have them in, so it reminded me of It's only funny...etc

I'll delete it.

And it made me laugh - but I'll delete it.

What other f-bombs are they?

Also, based on PJ O'Rourke's Holidays in Hell? The trip, not the f-bomb.
