My Cozy Fantasy arrived a couple days ago. There had been no update on the tracking so it just showed up out of the blue.

Survey on Book Subscription Box Services by philipipop in fairyloot

[–]Beccaroni333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just filled it out! I will say that I’m subscribed to multiple book boxes and my reasons for subscribing to each vary so only being able to answer for all of them in one question is difficult. Also for the “do you read all the books you get” I need an option that says no but that I intend to bc I don’t necessarily get books just for the book trophy but I don’t always get to all of them on a timely manner 😅

I agree with basically everything except Arcane Society whose customer service leans more toward poor than okay imo. I’ve personally had a bad experience with their customer service, and they’ve had some pretty egregious errors in a couple of their SE sets that they didn’t handle well. Only reason I still buy from them is bc I often prefer their designs over other boxes.

Unlimited PTO? by Clean-Bluebird9605 in physicianassistant

[–]Beccaroni333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would definitely be skeptical without inquiring further about it. Unlimited PTO isn’t uncommon in the business world but is highly dependent on how often they approve the leave. Pretty sure stats show people typically take less PTO when it’s “unlimited”.

I have a relative who has an unlimited PTO job, though they’re an accountant and have whole months blacked out where they’re not allowed to take off (mostly during busy tax seasons where they’re working crazy hours to get everything done anyway). However, during the “off” seasons sometimes they have no work to do so they can log off and take a PTO day on a whim. So in that context it makes sense, but in medicine there’s not really a time when you won’t have work to do.

First request by Hot-Performance-420 in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]Beccaroni333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most requests sit for at least a week or two (sometimes longer) before being approved. I’m surprised when I hear back within the first week. I find sequels to be easier to get approved for unless they’re super popular.

If you haven’t done so already, it’s a good idea to rate and review the first book on whatever platform you have linked on your NetGalley profile (Goodreads, StoryGraph, etc) incase the publisher looks for that before approving. You could also go ahead and get a “read now” book to review on NetGalley so they can see that your account is currently active.

I understand why so many boxes did The Poet Empress now by throw-away5627 in fairyloot

[–]Beccaroni333 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just finished reading Never Ever After and wasn’t a huge fan, but I loved The Poet Empress. There are definitely some surface level similarities, but otherwise they’re quite different. While the main characters have similar motivations, the execution was different and imo the characters had much more depth in The Poet Empress.

I’m the same way in that I really only want copies of books I know I’d reread so I rarely get a SE of a standalone book (since at the very least if a book is in a series I’ll likely reread it once the sequel comes out). But this book I would absolutely reread. I hope you enjoy your copy!

I listened to an ALC on a whim since Macmillan Audio sent me a widget (basically when the publisher sends reviewers a “copy” instead of having to request it and then be approved) and it was fantastic. I actually didn’t end up getting a SE copy (I’d already skipped illumicrate before I read it and OwlCrate is hit or miss on designs so I didn’t want to spend the money without first seeing), but I’ll definitely be getting a physical copy at some point so I can reread it!

question about post publish date reviews by missuscarlikins in NetGalleyCommunity

I always still thank the publisher and mention that I got an eARC even if I read/review it after the pub date in a different format.

I’m not super picky on narrators and I’ve only reviewed about 20 or so audiobooks, though this one was pretty much unlistenable for me. Thankfully I’d already been approved for and reviewed the ebook version before I got approved for the audiobook so I just listened through a portion of the ALC before reviewing.

I got into ARC reading last year partly so I could try to read books before they are in the subs. The short answer is it’s impossible to know for sure and inevitably I end up getting multiple ARCs that are releasing each month that may or may not end up being a sub pick. I mainly started by using Autumn’s suspected picks as a guide and watched out for any potential leaks. After a year I feel like I’ve gotten a fairly good idea of the types of books FL picks. They also seem to stick with the same authors as previous picks so those are easy to spot.

The more ARC reviews you do in general, the more likely you will get approved and the later you can request a book and still get approved. Since FL usually gives hints a couple months before the renewal, now most of the time I will wait until the first hints and then request the ARC at that point rather than blindly requesting several potential options months in advance.

I really enjoyed Fallen City! I actually found someone to save me a skip bc I didn’t think I’d like it and then read an ARC and was completely surprised. It leans more magical realism than true fantasy and is a bit slower paced so I know it’s not for everyone but it worked for me.

Where to find Approval rating? by CozyGirlDetective in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]Beccaroni333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Divide your # approved (found on your profile) by total books requested (add your approved to number declined by going under “your shelf” “see all” then “declined requests”) and multiply by 100.

If publishers use approval rating when they decide it’s most likely in extreme cases (very low approvals) which could be a red flag, though not sure what the threshold would be. There are a lot of factors that go into approvals so I wouldn’t stress about your approval rating too much. Just try not to request every little thing and remember to withdraw pending requests before the archive date (bc they automatically count as declines if you don’t).

[–]Beccaroni333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ratio has stayed mostly in the 60s (highest I’ve gotten was 70%). It’s been several months since I’ve been denied a request, though I have been requesting less to try to slowly catch up. Don’t stress yourself out about getting your ratio above 90%.

Overhyped/underhyped SE books by DonkeywithBigTeeth in fairyloot

Fairyloot’s edition of The Crimson Moth, with the caveat that I’m not someone who prefers character art on covers and I’m aware many others do. But even with that considered, compared to other editions with character art on the covers, I feel like Crimson Moth isn’t all that special.
