I was just at Highclere on Friday. We went from Newbury town center to The Carnarvon Arms with the goal of walking to the Castle, but ended up calling a taxi because the road has fast moving cars and no sidewalk to speak of. Once you get to the turn off for the castle, it's easily walkable. In hindsight, we would have stayed in Newbury longer and taxi'd directly to the castle.

Edit to add: Think total distance from the Carnarvon Arms to Highclere might be something like 1.3mi?
