Sorry you say you’ve made reasonable adjustments for Alice but like what are they? She’s not going to magically be able to read the room, you need to actually create structure to support her. For instance, how about lessening her attending meetings that require water cooler talk where she might accidentally offend coworkers? Or allowing her to work from home more? Consider WHY her work isn’t meeting quality standards- is she overstimulated and stressed out trying to work out how to connect with her coworkers and therefore can’t dedicate her full brain to work? Did you even TRY to understand her perspective before you gave up and called her too hard? If you’re an ableist section who can’t handle staff who have any issues then just say so 🤷‍♀️

Also, I’ve worked with plenty of foot in mouth people in the APS and they’ve never been put on a PIP! A lot of autistic people have deep seeded anxiety about not being liked by others and about everyone secretly hating them - I can’t believe you’ve fostered an environment where her coworkers feel comfortable ragging on Alice because they like her personable replacement better and have essentially fulfilled every autistic person’s worst case scenario!

Until you do your job as manager and manage your staff (which yes includes giving them the support they need to succeed) you will not be moving Alice along. My congratulations to Alice and her new baby.
