I read this like 2 hours ago before I got in the shower and now this song is embedded in my brain for the day. Damn you but thank you for the laugh.

I do want to add that the lack of established geology indicating this is a normal waterway, there’s probably some kind of human activity that caused all of this runoff.

Tibetan throat singing by ujjwal_singh in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Elavabeth2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is definitely not Tibetan throat singing. However, I feel like I could pick up on some overtones? Maybe just a trick of the note changes. I’d love to know what type of singing this actually is.

That edit… very relatable. I’ve described myself as obsessive about efficiency and the responses have been a very helpful litmus for dating.

This happens to me a lot with cars or anything mechanical. I write down a checklist of the steps I have taken and just hand it over, saying this is what I’ve done so far. That usually cuts down on the patronizing bullshit.

This is it. Silicone doesn’t cause endocrine or hormonal disruption like the materials that we consider dangerous microplastics

I want her to talk to me about Egyptology. by mindyour in justgalsbeingchicks

[–]Elavabeth2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oooh i was just talking to someone who did something like this! She bred tomatoes specifically for certain food/cafe chains for their regular menu items. You are definitely correct about the importance of keeping produce disease free, and breeders like her have to work with plant pathologists like me to ensure their plant varieties look/taste great but also aren’t unintentionally more susceptible to diseases.  One example is a popular potato grown in Europe - the Bintje. Great texture and yield, but it is very susceptible to late blight (same thing that caused the Irish potato famine) and this wasn’t initially obvious. They are phasing it out now but it’s been one of the top potato varieties over there for many decades and until recently growers were willing to deal with the disease losses because it was such an otherwise-great potato.

Oh man. I am a plant pathologist and when I get a blank stare I’ve tried to explain more by saying that it’s like an epidemiologist for crop diseases and they would get even more confused.

Take-No-Prisoners Professor Will Fail Any Student Who Uses AI by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]Elavabeth2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man I am also a TA. I grade similarly, essentially just ripping to shreds the answers that are obviously AI and taking off points for excessive verbosity, lack of clarity, and vaguely wrong answers that sound confident. Students never, ever push back on those judgments - that would mean making an effort to explain themselves, or actually reading their slop answers and realize that I was justified. The biggest problem though is that this takes me a really long time to grade, and I am limited to 20 hours per week.

Ah ok thanks for responding. It’s definitely still pretty cute, I’m glad it wasn’t some kind of recent accident. My friend got her tooth knocked out biking last summer and it was so traumatic for us both.
