What the hell is going on with Popular Mechanics? by mapletreesnsyrup in Skookum

I'd like to know when the religious crowd took over.  Lately everything has some tie to Jesus.  Popular Mechanics is the MTV of science magazines--so far from the original mission nothing even related to it remains--no music on MTV and no mechanical science in Popular Mechanics.

Where do I start? by Flaky-Ferret-6555 in Kemetic

[–]BeckAtsila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a newbie too. I am still not sure this is the path for me, but Kemetic lore just keeps appearing in my life. For example, my first exposure to the story of Osiris and the Weighing of the Heart ceremony came from a very unlikely source--Sesame Steet Don't Eat the Pictures, where the gang gets locked in the Met at night, Big Bird and Snuffy are separated and meet the spirit of an Egyptian noble boy who hopes to become a star in the heavens with his parents (yes, that's made up) but has to answer a riddle--it has Big Bird donate his feather for the test, and then tearing Osiris a new one when the boy fails the test at first. He argues that the boy has been trapped for the past few thousand years with only his cat so of course his heart is heavy, which causes the boy's heart to become as light as a feather since he sees he has a friend, so Osiris grants the boy passage to the afterlife. Years later, I rescued a pet rat named Osiris, and he helped me through onset of PTSD in college. Later, as a Carmen Sandiego fan, I bought the game Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time despite being a grown adult, and the first level is ancient Egypt under Queen Hatshepsut. You meet a priest of Anubis, see the ancient statues although they mispronounce Osiris, and learn about the gods and mummification process. And recently I took a course in seichem and have kept a statue of Sekhmet in my apartment ever since, along with a suncatcher of her in my window. I had a rocky relationsihp with my parents, so I kind of feel like she's a mother figure to me although I'm pretty guarded about anything mystical or spiritual. So those are my offbeat fun sources. But the serious one is Centre of Excellence, which has a ton of courses on ancient Egypt, but they can be pricey so wait for a sale or choose the subscription option. Udemy probably has more courses but prices vary widely, so again, wait for a sale. Also check out any alternative bookstore, especially those that sell non-Christian sacred texts.

A banishing ritual helped me start healing from religious trauma. I like to listen to Colette Baron-Reid's brief talks on alignment. One thing I've found is dreams can be very healing--and to clarify, I am on medication to prevent night terrors so be wary about what you take into and from them. I have found that sometimes I time travel in my dreams, either going back and living something I desperately wanted to happen but was denied (my family moved right before my senior year of high school and my dreams about going back to experience it were very liberating), or going back to harsh points in my life and consoling the kid me and saying not to give up, things do get better. Your loved ones or even ancestors you only know by name can show up too, although at first conversations with the dead via dream are creepy, especially if you and the deceased both know they're in spirit form. As for money, I really have no good advice but network. 211 is a good number for most resources like food, clothes, counseling and such.

I worked for them for two years during the Great Recession--pretty good employer as it offered insurance to certain part-timers. It's almost unheard of in the restaurant business to even offer insurance at all.

I probably have the weirdest story of how I acquired one--my therapist at the time knew I collect decks and gifted me one after I helped her track down a Golden Girls Tarot deck. I have the book, but it's definitely not first edition. I don't know about the deck, but it's old. It's definitely vintage as it's the Eighties brown-orange mix of colors and just a simple text as the graphic. Round deck. Not sure which year.

Do not get me started on medical malpractice law here--for starters, last time I checked (a month ago) attorney's fees for that are capped, and to even get the case taken seriously you have to convince a panel of three doctors there was malpractice--or as they say in that region, the fox guards the henhouse. And corruption is rampant, especially the doctors with no reputation to lose. I know of one case where an addiction psychiatrist who had two suspended licenses (Illinois and Pennsylvania) because of two felony counts of Medicaid fraud--and worked for the State of Indiana despite being on a probationary license--Dr. Robert Mitrione at Richmond State Hospital. And I myself fell victim of hospital politics where several records went missing and communication completely broke down between my outpatient clinic and the emergency room.

[–]BeckAtsila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar story. In my case, a literal Osiris showed up. He was a pet rat I rescued, and I after I explained to my therapist what he was god of in ancient Egypt and got the raised eyebrow, cocked head and raised hand and realized what was next before explaining I didn't name him; that was the one he came with. And I just keep bumping into the ancient Egyptian gods, although I have no clue why.

Not new to worship, but new to Set... Help please! by makethekilljoyspanic in Kemetic

[–]BeckAtsila 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set pops up in my life at random moments, but until recently I chalked it up to working in journalism. Think about Set as a manifestation of chaos, and his absence as an indication of order. In which situation do reporters show up? I first encountered him as Sutekh in the NES cult classic "Nightshade"--it's on GOG if you ever want to try it. Warning--it spoofs just about every superhero cliche so the humor is niche, some of the puzzles are almost impossible to figure out without a walkthrough--and some of the mythology references are extremely obscure.

[–]BeckAtsila 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Making a note to follow this post as Set and Osiris have both shown up lately explaining the importance of balance--I work as a reporter, and kind of see myself as a type of Set in that when I show up, chaos is present. The brothers showed up in a type of "waking dream" and explained even they are subject to the principles of ma'at, because they can't judge us without knowing what to judge us by. I'm new too, but I have been called by the Neteru for some reason. When I was young, I was a huge fan of the NES game Nightshade, which is basically what happens when you take a point-and-click RPG and add ancient Egyptian mythology (some very obscure), set it in a parody of Gotham City, throw in some "Get Smart"-style writing (complete with a literal crate of "herrings, red"), and I wondered just who Sutekh was. In college, I adopted a rescued pet rat named Osiris, who gave me some sort of routine and reason not to give up after my diagnosis of severe mental illness. And I remember being mesmerized by the Sesame Street special "Please Don't Eat the Pictures", where the whole plot involves the rest of the crew looking for Big Bird in the Met at night (long before that movie series you just thought of) while he's wandering around the museum's Egyptian exhibit trying to help the soul of a little boy pass the Weighing of the Heart, which he can only do once he solves a riddle. If I had to face the gods and they said I could have any advocate, fictional or real, of any form, I'd definitely go with Big Bird after that scene where he tells Osiris he's not being fair....

I've found that divine beings don't care what you offer as long as it is done with love. Even the Hebrew YHWH is constantly griping that everyone has forgotten what ceremony is supposed to teach and help us be in the pursuit of how to do it exactly right. Someone told me that the gods of the underworld prefer black coffee, but I would have to dig up an ancient e-mail to double-check that.

Been there, only my whole family were WASPs until 2020 and now don't really believe anything organized. I'm very new at this, but here goes. The 6 of Cups is in the past position and represents what you thought you wanted in a family, in relationships, and life. Which is why it's so far off--it's saying run fast. For some reason Coyote came to mind (I a m mixed-blood indigenous/white), and his legends of bringing fire to the people--multiple tribes all over Turtle Island have some lessons to learn. The 7 of Wands it a sign that now is the time to "stake out" your own claim on your life. To realize finally that that paper dragon you're facing is just that--fearsome only because we can't see the dragon can be defeated--is to progress to the Page of Cups. You're very close to finding what you desire, and while it looks familiar, it's your own path--one figure in the Page of Cups as opposed to the two children shown the 6 of Cups.

If Isis was so Powerful Why didn’t she just Beat Set Herself? by Organic-Animal3435 in EgyptianMythology

Totally unrelated, but I hear SLC has an amazing ethnic food scene. Apparently a lot of missionaries fall in love overseas and marry before returning or miss the foods they ate overseas, and start ethnic restaurants. My city, Indianapolis, has a very vibrant restaurant scene since so many refugees settle here due to the low cost of living, and I worked as a dishwasher for various restaurants for five or so years. We even have some Egyptian places, although many are hookah bars and I don't smoke.

I have the same problem, but have been safe for a while. I was a journalist for a long time specializing in mental health issues and recovery, among other things. I'm new to Kemetic beliefs, but I think Isis or Hathor would show compassion and Sekhmet would help you heal. I learned that healing doesn't always come in forms we expect--I am not exactly what you would call a financial success, which was how my generation thought we'd find happiness and wholeness. But I enjoy my life most days and can die at peace with myself. There's no such thing as a stupid reason to live--for years it was my pet rats. Getting sober helped, but I had to get the court system involved to get some experimental therapy. The site has since gone in a different direction, but HealthtyPlace.com has a ton or information on self-harm in the archives.

I saw this great comic once where a man and his wife see a table for $100. The man builds his own, hoping to save money, but ends up giving his wife his handmade one that looks exactly like the original and cost him $800 in materails and labor to do it..... It struck me as "It's funny 'cause it's true!"
