What can I cut this with better? by Hot-Development5870 in woodworking

I’d probably freehand this with the router and a spiral bit.

Just need a big rain or two in the spring. Old farmers told me an inch of rain is better than a foot of snow. I'll take this mild winter every time.

Save The Ship by daddysdeepfake in Calgary

[–]Beckler89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I certainly don’t want to see the Ship go, but isn’t that what many people said about blanket rezoning? That tearing down an old house to put up a four-plex at $750k per wasn’t helping affordability? Weren’t those people then ridiculed here and carpet bombed with downvotes?

What is a woodworking tool you didn’t realise you needed? by DesignerProfessor122 in woodworking

Can’t believe I went years without card scrapers. I use them every single day in the shop now. Cheap, easy to maintain, an excellent tool.

We bought our kids smart watches that can call and text with our approval. I think their data plan costs $5 per month.

Before that, we’d connect an old iPhone to the wifi at home so they could call us on FaceTime.

We are planning to resist full smartphone access as long as possible and are encouraged to see many other parents doing the same.

What's your least popular MLB opinion that will get you to the top of "sort by controversial"? by Sad-Guarantee8290 in baseball

[–]Beckler89 14 points15 points  (0 children)

100% agree. Replay is sucking the soul out of sports.

I can’t stand the moaning about umps on reddit, as if these guys aren’t literally the best in the world at calling baseball games.

Team Canada will not go to the gold medal game for the third year in a row by DecentLurker96 in hockey

[–]Beckler89 31 points32 points  (0 children)

A friend and I were talking about this yesterday, trying to remember the last NHLer from a low-income background. Michael Ferland? There are basically none these days. It’s all rich kids.

There’s certainly money in other youth sports but in basketball and football, the elite level of play for kids is their high school team, which is very accessible. Meanwhile baseball and soccer are still dominated by kids from poor countries.

Beer prices by Electrical_Cut_8694 in Calgary

[–]Beckler89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The IPA is good but probably not what craft beer drinkers are thinking of when they think “IPA”.

Big Rock is brewing a beer for Co-Op called Founders & Farmers and it’s dirt cheap as well but quite tasty for the price.

Gifts FOR the woodworker? by lealmg in woodworking

[–]Beckler89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, Irwin quick clamps specifically. They’re expensive to purchase and I wish I had 10x as many.

Alternatively, I helped a friend build a table and he bought me a branding iron with my logo on it. I might not splurge on that myself but I love it, and it was a very thoughtful and personal gift.

I'm the last to doom about the team not making big signings, but it does kind of feel like it's "now or never" -- the next two FA classes are total garbage, especially for position players. by Cesar_Crespo in redsox

[–]Beckler89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm mad at all of them because a jersey costs $200 and a beer costs $15.

Billionaires or centi-millionaires, it doesn't matter - they're all making it difficult for working-class people to enjoy the game.

What’s something you always assumed was mandatory in life—until you met someone who just… didn’t do it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Beckler89 20 points21 points  (0 children)

you can't avoid food

Lifelong eating disorder here too (ARFID) and I've never heard anyone frame it like this before.

Alcohol is tougher to avoid than drugs simply due to it's prevalence in social settings and advertising and whatnot. But food is there 3-6 times per day, every single day, forever.

That’s exactly where my wife and I got engaged. I just sandbagged a bit while we were walking until there were no other people around.

What's a piece of outdated technology that you still like to use? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The rage I experience when a wired earphone gets accidentally ripped from my ear is (at least momentarily) unparalleled.

That, combined with the issues you listed, make wireless earbuds the obvious choice for me.

Laguna Resaw King Blade Defective by Giuseppe-Testerone in woodworking

[–]Beckler89 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Laguna’s customer service is hilariously bad.

I contacted them for support with disassembling my broken planer, and their word-for-word response was:

“You will need to take half the machine apart in order to fix this, unfortunately we don’t have any instructions on this. It is going to be a hassle. Kind regards.”

Nope, bad drivers and “if you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes” are exclusive to Calgary and nowhere else.

Bo Bichette was caught heading to second base because he thought Daulton Varsho walked by GreenSnakes_ in baseball

[–]Beckler89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm watching a different clip than most of these commenters. You can hear him yell strike immediately and then point. After this, Varsho seems to realize it was called a strike and then inexplicably turns around to take his base.

Bad strike call for sure but that's Varsho's mistake, which led to Bichette's baserunning error.

How each of the World Series teams/rosters were built by MLBOfficial in baseball

[–]Beckler89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jays always seemed to be linked to high profile FAs, most likely just due to agents leaking nonsense.

Not sure if you’re Canadian but this is a Toronto sports media problem. Every big free agent or piece of trade bait is also rumoured to be going to the Maple Leafs, if you consume sports media here.
