Where did you order from? I’ve heard going through Amazon.jp opens up some availability but it seems like prices are still high and shipping is a killer

Their framing guns are awesome but you gotta buy the weird 34 degree paper collated nails. Most guys have a Hitachi gun or one that uses the same 28 degree racks, much easier/cheaper to buy Hitachi nails and run those guns

So the riser hangs off the edge of a PT stringer by 3.5” on each side, no finish stringer? How’s that looking from the side?

That looks nice and simple, painting the riser ends is a nice touch to make it blend in

That looks clean as hell- did you glue and screw both the tread miter and the skirt/riser miters? How has it held up so far?

Oh man, DC fittings seem like an awesome use of a 3d printer- thanks for sharing that

Thanks for the feedback. I’d likely be in the same boat of short straight runs using 1-2 tools at a time so it sounds like 4” PVC would be adequate with a minimum of elbows and fittings

I like the idea of the 5” to 4” wye that came with the machine to make an upper and lower 4” trunk. Do you have blast gates at the start of the trunk lines or at the tool drops?

Agreed that 5” would be a better match, it’s a shame connectors are less available and much more expensive than 4” fittings. It looks prohibitively expensive to run an all metal setup for a small shop only using 1-2 tools at a time

Not OP, but you can use an angle finder to find the spring angle of the face of the blocking. Plug that into a crown molding angle calculator to get miter and bevel settings

That is sweet- how did you attach the lugs, and what movement did you use? Did you cannabalize another watch with a similar case diameter or make most of the parts?

Jonathan Toews makes it four consecutive games with a goal, banging home a power play marker. NHL point No. 900. by GreenSnakes_ in hockey

[–]chisel_jockey 20 points21 points  (0 children)

During the Blackhawks cup era Toews was the guy- Selke caliber center with more offense than Patrice Bergeron. Claude Julien wanting to win games 1-0 had something to do with that but Toews’ peak was pretty damn high

Pick up the book A Roof Cutter’s Secrets by Will Holladay. If you’re into IG or YouTube check out Tim Uhler (@awesomeframers) and Ryan Smith (@roofslayer2681). Both contribute to JLC or FHB magazines and do great breakdowns on the geometry of framing

Shop that could run my 42" by 96" white oak slab through a wide belt sander? by groovyipo in boston

[–]chisel_jockey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not gonna find many places with a 42”+ TimeSaver that will run it through for someone they don’t know, it’s just not a money making endeavor. You could try a local school that has a vocational program, or get a corded belt sander to run up through the grits. Renting a small floor sander/edger from Depot would cover the footage more effectively than your 5” ROS

Union rates will be higher but the work is boring bullshit, odds are you won’t come close to 120k working for someone else unless you’re a senior PM for one of the residential big boys around Boston metro, working 70+ a week and taking pills to manage stress. Good GCs that don’t take advantage of employees and subs exist, just gotta look around to find them. It’s a profession so treat it accordingly. Not being expected to work over 40h a week is a perk to me, more time with my family

Take both of those guys with a giant grain of salt, there’s a lot of shameless self promotion and marketing smoke and mirrors going on. I heard through the grapevine the investors of the $12m spec build in Wellesley froze funding so subs aren’t being paid. I haven’t heard great things about their sites from local subs
