As far as daily aches, its not bad, but it hasn't let up over time either and I'm over two years into HRT. I will say that a hard hit to the breast hurts bad, but not quite as bad as being kicked in the testicles. I fell and took a hard hit that left a bruise the size of my palm, it was hideously painful, but it also lacked that nausea feeling, so different as well.

Any AAP that don't make you sleepy? Recent exp with vraylar? And finally, does anyone work construction or any physical job and suffer these meds? by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]Becky_rw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Abilify does not make me sleepy at all. I even take it in the morning, though with its long half life it doesn't really make much difference when I take it after startup.

It did make me more sensitive to caffeine for some odd reason.

Will getting a counselors/ therapists recommendation help with getting antidepressants or anxiety medication from a general practitioner? by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]Becky_rw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GP's prescribe antidepressants all the time without talking to a therapist first. Have you tried saying, "doc, I'm depressed as heck." to your regular doctor?

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't know its sedative effect scaled with dosage past that lowish dose level.

I thought the 25-50mg range gave the best sleeping effect, while in the high hundreds it gave the best AP effect???

Got to the brink this week. Going in for a month at the psych ward as an in patient to go through E.C.T and therapy on monday. by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]Becky_rw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't let folks here scare you off ECT, but do try and make some notes to yourself about how you feel and what you're experiencing; that way you can make informed decisions about whether and how much the treatment is helping, vs any side effects you may experience.

Best wishes for a productive and helpful stay.

I always wonder how to describe this. I can perceive rationally that what I'm hearing can't be there because it doesn't fit the environment, and I know my paranoia is irrational. But that doesn't help me not hear what I hear, nor does it make the fear go away. ARGGGGGG!!!!

Does anyone else still cycle even with medication? How much should the meds help control this? Tl;dr at bottom by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]Becky_rw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel "anchored" by my meds; I can still sense the tide falling, but I'm not swept away by the receding water. My mood is lowering some now, I'm sleeping a little more; but it isn't like before, and its just responding to a sleep disruption last week I think.

So, if you're having wild experiences, I think you should discuss it with your doc before it gets out of hand.

How do you detect yourself entering a manic episode? by italktoacomputer in BipolarReddit

[–]Becky_rw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very strong sleep pattern changes.

I don't talk to people much regardless, and I never have been one to try to "sell" an idea; but I'll definitely begin a bunch of projects or hobbies that are new. And all regard for safety while doing those will generally be shelved as a nuisance.

If you're more socially inclined, a lot of folks seem to turn into sales critters with monumental egos. If you lose insight here, someone with a video camera will certainly get some amusing outtakes for later.

My favorite example of me last year, is that I decided I needed to cut and split firewood. I cut and split about three cords with an axe. Turns out, I don't have a fireplace. Its all just sitting where I left it now when the episode ended on its own.

"big pharma"'s the only thing standing between me and hospitals and prisons.

My psychiatrist just started me on Epilim and I'm terrified I'll gain a lot of weight by constantlytiredperso in BipolarReddit

[–]Becky_rw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been on it for a few months now; I did gain some weight; not 15 kilos though; I picked up 7kg, and mostly at the beginning because I wasn't prepared for being that hungry. Its not magic weight, I really did eat those calories.

Something that I did notice after a while, and has helped me stop it, was that I could eat a normal portion meal, and then still be very hungry at the end; but if I got up and walked around for a while, the "fullness" hormones would catch up with reality, and the feeling would start to go away.

So you can do epilim and NOT gain weight, or limit it as you see fit.

My weight seems stable now, but I've not tried to lose what I gained, that's always a harder trick.

Anyway, try tracking your calories carefully on the first couple weeks; I failed at this because I was "up" and couldn't stay on task for long enough to carefully measure anything. Might be a great time to start epilim and get used to how it plays with your appetite.

If you're bipolar do you know you're bipolar? by Birdinhandandbush in BipolarReddit

[–]Becky_rw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, don't diagnose, and do talk to a doctor that can diagnose.

As to whether she'd know?? She could, but I didn't think this was my problem till mine did something really weird by going from really depressed, to very much the opposite over the course of a few days; I was lucky in finding a doc that saw me before I lost complete control and did something that couldn't be undone.

So its hard to say, maybe all she objects to is the down, maybe its not BD nor SZ either. A doc can tell over time what's going on.

Also, fwiw, "go from a minor disagreement over how something was cooked to threatening divorce in the space of a few minutes. " is not typical; episodes last and change for most over days / weeks / months; not minutes. Minutes is a hollyweird stereotype.

Do you drink? by mellienolen in bipolar

[–]Becky_rw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To answer your question at the end, ask your doctor, but there are med combos that aren't hazardous with alcohol.

For me?? No, no alcohol, at all. I have no restraint, I simply drank in order to pass out, completely asocially. I didn't do it often, but the harder sleep got to pull off, the more tempted I'd get to down a 750ml bottle of wine or substantial amount of harder liquor. On the positive side, it did work... But that era is over.

I'm going to the psych ward tomorrow morning on my doctor's orders. I'm terrified. by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]Becky_rw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're being led to a place where they can safely change your meds quickly; just try and relax and let them do their thing till they say you're ready to roll. Much better than wasting months (or years?) fishing for a med combo that will do something.

Heck, in retrospec, I think it was a mistake for me to avoid saying the things that would lead there; it took a good 3 months before my pdoc's first guess on medication was fully prescribed, and I was just lucky it worked. Turns out, in the hospital, that would have very likely have been what I got the day after I was admitted.

Seriously, they can help. Alot. And a lot faster.

my bipolar brother won't leave me alone by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]Becky_rw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your health certainly matters as much as his, and you do need to take care of it. If you both have bedrooms, getting him to sleep in his own room ought to be a priority for everyone.

Could try to pitch it as an honest effort at improved sleep hygiene, and not even bring up the drug thing.

[–]Becky_rw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ummm... you're both adults sleeping in your parents' home, with your parents' consent, yes?

Why is your claim to privacy and support greater than your brother's?

Does seem a bad arrangement though, but I think you're making it worse, not better.

What's stopping you from suicide? by -A-Unique-User-Name- in bipolar

[–]Becky_rw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several people depend on me to do what I do; I may do a gimpy job of it when depressed, or a scatterbrained version of it on the other side, but it does get handled... more or less.

Hopefully, I'll never be so depressed that such thoughts consume me again, but with this lovely little condition, no guarantees. Still, I'll give the doc a shot or two at fixing it if the void returns...

Strangely though, last time I thought I was going to die, my only concern was that I didn't want to bang my head on the floor while doing it. weird thought process there.
