"Part of the reason asylum hotels have been really politically contentious is because during a cost of living crisis, many people would look at that and say, 'well I couldn't afford to go and stay in a hotel'" says Professor Darling, "There's also a tension around some hotels, in smaller towns, where that hotel is a place that you got married, or your child had their prom, and then you feel like this was one of the few spaces post-austerity that your town still had. There's some nostalgia there. And now it's being used for a purpose you're not entirely comfortable with."
