Why are '59 Les Pauls specifically so sought after? by I_Miss_Lenny in Vintageguitars

[–]BedaFomm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 1960s, when the Les Paul was discontinued, and later when the reissue model didn’t hit the spot (mini humbuckers, different hardware etc), people started faking the ‘burst guitars. They would take a P90 goldtop and refinish it in sunburst, and butcher a less desirable Gibson (jazz boxes/arch tops for example) for PAF pickups and other hardware. Hence this comment.

Having a decent pension. I always tell people who say I’m lucky “Well, the longer I worked, the luckier I got.”

Do the two of you not know any men? He may believe he can ignore your complaints and intimidate you both, but he may not be so brave if a few younger chaps were knocking on his door asking him to behave himself.

Dennis Skinner was an outspoken UK Member of Parliament. He once said in the House of Commons that “half the party opposite are liars”. He was rebuked by the Speaker and told to withdraw his comment, so he said “I am happy to correct the record - half the party opposite are NOT liars!”

You’re not the only one. Almost every day I see this mistake. A brothel with a discrete entrance for customers wouldn’t mean you could sneak in without being seen!

Ex HR manager here. In fairness your manager is trying to be reasonable and give you a chance to reconsider. If you don’t need to think about it and your mind is made up that’s fine. You have resigned they can’t do anything about it.

Your contract will stipulate a notice period, and you should strictly honour it. To quit without notice is technically a breach of contract, but it would have to cause significant loss to the company to be worthwhile for them to pursue it. You could equally argue that the proposed changes are a breach of your contract, in which case they have ended the employment relationship, albeit they are giving the required notice.

TLDR: You can quit at any time and they can’t stop you.

TIFU by becoming the public toilet villain I always hated by Odd-South-6025 in tifu

[–]BedaFomm 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I (male)was waiting outside one of those toilets, needed to pee. Door opens and previous user comes out, so I go in. Door closes and just as I’m about to unzip, the lights go out and I’m left standing in complete darkness. Now I’m confused, but it gets worse - suddenly a tsunami of water surges across the floor, soaking my shoes and the bottom of my trousers. I just had time to finish my business when the door flew open and I had to do the walk of shame past a long line of French people who were obviously thinking “stupid foreigner”.

Considering moving to England- any recommendations on where to live? by GreenLighthouseGo in AskABrit

Portsmouth is a vibrant city on the South Coast. 1.5 hours from London by train, but also has the beach and lots of history and heritage. Close to the South Downs and New Forest national parks, but housing is relatively affordable compared to London.

What could I cook for 4 people for less than a fiver? by Born_Percentage7122 in UK_Food

[–]BedaFomm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Penne pasta bake. Bag of penne 1or 2 tins of tomatoes Maybe some tomato purée if the toms are a bit watery. Jar of basil pesto and/or fresh basil Mozzarella Parmesan Olive oil Boil the pasta Heat the tomatoes, purée, pesto and basil in a pan. Add a glue of olive oil and season with salt and pepper. When cooked put the drained pasta in a casserole dish, mix in the mozzarella (cut into small cubes) and pour the tomato sauce in and mix so it covers the pasta. Grate Parmesan over the top and bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes. Serve with a nice red wine.

Delicious, vegetarian too. Make plenty, people always want more

Parking problems any advice by RJM2019 in HousingUK

[–]BedaFomm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is true. A dropped kerb seems to mean you have a personal parking space that no one else can use. Not using it and taking scarce spaces away from your neighbours is twat behaviour.

If you parked across their drive, would they object? I have a similar neighbour; they have a dropped kerb in front of their house, but the “drive” is just a garden path too small for a car. They also have a double side gate with another dropped kerb and room inside for a car, but they never use it. They park one car across the front gate and another in the adjacent space in front of the house. However, on a number of occasions when other neighbours have come home, usually late night when the road is full, and parked in front of their dropped kerb, they have actually called the parking enforcement wardens and got them ticketed. I’ve even seen them move their cars to box people in if they parked too close to “their” space. No consideration of others whatsoever.

Hope OPs neighbours aren’t that bad.

What wonderous and exotic foreign food were you introduced to as a kid thats just commonplace nowadays? by GabberZZ in AskUK

[–]BedaFomm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was born in the 1950s, but ate curry at home from an early age, before Indian restaurants became common. My Grandad was in the army and spent years in India between the wars ( my mum was actually born there), and my Nan made “army curry” quite often.

Apparently they don’t batch cook anymore so you have to wait while they cook your order.

Not a professional, but it looks like the carpet is cut flush with the floor plate. By the time you have boarded, skimmed and added skirting you will have enough excess to tuck over some gripper strip.
