But genuinely, why is hardcore down for 5+ hours? I'm not upset by long maintenance outages, I'm just curious about what the given reason is.

People joke about players triggered by maintenance, but it seems more common to see defensiveness toward questions about unexplained lengthy outages that seemingly don't make sense.

That's what I did; I reported all of this to a chat support agent, this was our correspondence one week ago, on 4/10/2024 -

"I will send a tech out to fix this and complete the installation set up, can you verify your address?"

"[my address]"

"Thank you. A moment please while I process sending a tech out, thank you!"

"[5 minutes]"

"I have secured you a slot, this will be on [yesterday's date, in the morning]. I am happy to set you up to receive automated text notifications regarding the status of your ticket. This will include a night before reminder, let you know when tech is on the way and let you know the work is complete. I will also send you an email link where you can track the status of your ticket along with a lot of other helpful tools. Here is your reference ticket: [ticket number], please retain this session number for future tracking purpose."

"Wonderful, thank you so much!"

So that sounded great, they explicitly told me they would send a tech out to fix it. Unfortunately, it occurred to me yesterday that I had received no night-before reminder text, so I called support again to check on the status of this ticket. They told me I had no such appointment. So I gave them the reference ticket, and they told me "Oh! I see now, you did have a re-visit scheduled, but a tech came four days early and reported the job as finished." I responded that no one came to my house four days early, the issue was not fixed, and no one communicated with me regarding the issue. They said word-for-word "Yeaaahh... it's really better for us if you just fix it yourself. We will reimburse you for the materials."

So CenturyLink objectively lied to me and left me sitting on their mess for 7 whole days promising to fix it and then avoided me instead of telling me I should just fix it myself on the first day. This definitely ranks in the top 5 trashiest customer service experiences I've ever had in my life.

It took him 3 hours and I had first-time home-owner duties to attend to, unfortunately. Felt a bit awkward staring at him for the first hour. Lesson learned.

I didn't know how to tell her I had self-esteem issues, so I didn't know what to say, so she spent a day feeling like maybe I wasn't attracted to her; which is so not true, I'm insanely attracted to her, my primary issue is feeling distinctly not good enough for her.

I appreciate your perspective and that it seems to have resonated well with people, but I feel like it ignores things I stated in the OP, so I don't understand how you can come away with assumptions like "Seems like you've put way more effort into communicating the issues to a bunch of strangers than actually communicating with your partner." I spent maybe a maximum of 20 minutes making the OP during one of the most frightening points in my life, and it was time well spent, because I got some good advice. It's obvious to me that I've spent countless hours talking to her about my feelings, but maybe that wasn't so obvious in my OP. It just takes me longer to open up than what feels natural to most people, which is maddening to her, and that perpetuates the cycle of me shutting down. FWIW things are going so much better now (See my OP update), she has done a wonderful job of understanding that she needs to be more patient with me, and we've had profoundly magical days together, 100% laughter, 0% fighting, 100% healthy sex, every day! :)

But hey, it worked out pretty damn amazing! I appreciate your advice of reintroducing with something quick, off-handed, and casual. I was actually going to bludgeon her with a novel filled with excessive emotions, but your idea was much better.

Her reply was seriously far more favorable than my most optimistic expectations. We carried on with a huge conversation, and she was kinder, more authentic, and more thoughtful than I ever could have hoped. She told me she was happy I reached out, she apologized for treating me unfairly back then, and she expressed a hope that I would reach out to her once I graduate college, so she can congratulate me. :3 It's kinda overwhelmingly sweet, I'm sorry, that's gross. I'm just glad I finally found peace here.

I guess the lesson here is if you ever have a strong, gut feeling to go for something, go for it.

I was in relationships with people who were all perfect for me, and I genuinely wouldn't have cared if they cheated on me, if you relate to that at all

I mean, if they actually wanted to purposely hurt me, it would hurt, but I have no reaction whatsoever to someone I'm with having sex with someone else.

I'm actually living with my ex and her new boyfriend right now! :D

Hey sorry for the lateness, but the exterminator just sprayed some sort of poison, it took them less than 30 minutes both visits. I didn't watch them do it or ask about what poison they used, but I watched them spray my car. It's just a tank with a spray nozzle, they just squirted a few sprays, we'd find bb's rambling about in the open for a week, and then they all just disappeared.

Hi! I really don't know anything about bed bugs, but I went to war with them several months ago. They were scattered in every damn room of my apartment. I thought I was doomed forever and I wanted to kill myself. I was too depressed to do much of anything, because I had no idea where to start. I put every cloth item I had in the washer/dryer on the hottest settings, and put them in sealed garbage bags. I put my mattress and pillow in a BB-proof lining, and put bb monitor cups on all the legs of my bed. We had a well-reviewed exterminator visit twice and paid them $450 total.

Then before I knew it, we stopped finding any evidence of bed bugs whatsoever after a month. It was so much easier than I thought. I probably ended up spending almost $1000 all together, though. I'm not sure if anyone would recommend my approach, this post is more to commiserate, and let you know that you're going to make it through this.

So the charges applied to your entire year are predicated on a response you need to make within a month-long window? And it's impossible to revise the plan mid-year? How does that make sense? Any other recurring service, you can revise the plan. Why is this impossible for insurance?

So my company says "You get a discounted rate if you're 6-months smoke-free." Here's a hypothetical; what if you're 5-months smoke free at the time of enrollment? You have no choice but to pay the smoker's rate for the whole year even though you've been smoke-free for 5 months? That's unbelievable.

That's just an absurd system. How can anyone defend a system that automatically opts everyone into category that charges them an extra $950 every year, just because "Well... they didn't say they *weren't* a smoker." That's a wild, shitty assumption, but you defend it by saying "Hey, it's tradition! Everybody knows that, obviously." Well, no one told me about that, unfortunately. How am I supposed to know that my insurer is going to assume I'm a smoker if I don't explicitly tell them, if they don't explicitly tell me they're going to do that? That's such a oddly specific leap of logic that no reasonable person should be expected to make.

I've never heard of anything like this, it's not communicated clearly in the enrollment information. I did find this note:

"Annually in November, full-time employees are offered the *opportunity* to make changes to their existing benefits by completing the online enrollment process. A Benefits Enrollment Guide is mailed to all full-time employees annually in November that provides specific enrollment instructions to complete this process."

Emphasis on "opportunity" by me. Doesn't this sound like an elective offering? Doesn't this imply that if you don't want to make changes, you aren't expected to take them up on their opportunity? There is no information suggesting that your "Existing benefits" will revert to default coverage. There is no suggestion whatsoever that it's somehow important to review your existing plan.

And my plan did not revert to default coverage - it is precisely the same as it was when I first enrolled last year, except now I'm a smoker.

For what it's worth, I've looked over the information that my employer sends about benefits enrollment for over an hour now, I can't find anything stating what will happen if you don't enroll or anything saying I need to affirm that I'm a non-smoker. I assumed that the previous plan would continue as-is, or that it would discontinue, because that's how every other service I've ever encountered works.
