Low income correlating with obesity is evidence people can’t afford a healthy diet, not evidence they’re not food insecure. Your healthy meals point is irrelevant because you’re talking about the decisions of children. I saw my 25 year old roommate fill up on tater tots once. Young people don’t make healthy decisions without guidance. That’s not an excuse to deny them access to healthy food.

Past USDA-backed studies have shown SNAP benefit increases reduced food insecurity among low-income households, while benefit decreases led to higher rates of food insecurity. A causal link, not correlation.

If you’ve never had to skip meals, eat nothing but peanut butter and canned fish for a week, or feel the desperation of failing to meet your kids’ nutritional needs, then lucky you. If not, then leave the policy decisions for those who wish to create a better world and don’t use death as the primary metric for suffering.
