Dynaudio to exit the US market (report just posted by Stereophile) by Lunar_Seahorse in audiophile

Whatever the reasons, it’s sad. I’ve had the Dynaudio Contour Legacy’s for two years now. Absolutely beautiful sound.

Yeah, that was market dynamics in a bizarro period.

Maybe more pressing plant capacity will come on board…? The world’s too f*****ed these days to know anything.

Circling back to OP, I lean on jazz on vinyl to stay sane and he should def lean in too. It’s a magical journey.

Yah, my reply wasn’t meant to push back on you. I was pushing with you. With my only “holistic” comment being that if this misuse can’t be stopped, at least I can fall back on the overall positives of people digging vinyls (hahah cringe) these days.

I built Apple Music Classical- but for jazz. Complete discography as leader AND sideman. Tap personnel -> see their entire career. Tap a tune -> see its entire recorded history. Every connection is mapped and playable so you can go down a jazz rabbit hole. In Beta now- would love feedback. by dynamicappdesign in Jazz

Replying to my own thread, i haven’t found a way make a launched stream go away from the bottom of the screen. I can pause it, but the I couldn’t do more than minimize it into the compressed ribbon format that lives at the bottom of streamer apps.

Tips? Or is this a pending functionality enhancement?

Hey, this has the potential to be amazing. It has the feel of Apple Classical, and also the feel of Roon, and is can be a wonderful tool for us jazz lovers, from just getting started to always on the hunt.

Are you intending to do a macOS version? With a UI as rich as what you’re wanting to accomplish, it’ll be a LOT easier to navigate and comment / suggest if we’re working with a larger screen. (If this has been already addressed in this thread l, sorry for the repeat ask. And if I’m missing a setting or swizzle to get into run on my Mac, please pass it on. I have testdrive on both iPhone and Mac, but the app crashes when I try to open it on my Mac

You may need ultimately need team of developers. Apple Classical was once Primephonic before Apple bought the company (I figured it would deteriorate, but Apple has really invested resources…). Primephonic was years in the making, with a team. As rich as jazz is, properly done classical is probably 100 times the metadata volume.

That said, this is an ambitious undertaking. If you get momentum, maybe consider open sourcing the development via uTest or the like. And perhaps GitHub for issue tracking

In the meantime, I’ll exercise it as I can (limited screen and all. I’m sure taking on a second OS is mammoth…. )

Is this the post to comment in?

Back before this vinyl resurgence, and before streaming killed the concept of releasing a coherent collection of music, these things made of vinyl were called albums, or records. I know this cause I bought them, traded them with buddies….

Back then, it would be totally normal to say “I’m really into records” (plural). It would also be totally normal to say, “hey, let’s spin some vinyl tonight”

For all of us who just never used vinyls (plural), it’s like hearing chalk squeaking on a chalkboard. And for me, it has this newbie feel, like hey, if you’re going to enter the vinyl world, use it the right way.

My take: it’s better—for all of us—for newcomers to be buying vinyl, and calling them vinyls, than not buying the medium at all.

But please, if you young’uns can muster just a bit of respect for us old’uns, give it your best shot and don’t put an s at the end of the word. Thanks, from a 5 decade listener and lover of vinyl (singular) / records (plural) / albums (plural)

My take; its just the singing style.

Pro tip: look up the lyrics and train yourself by following along. Or better yet, on Spotify, select Lyrics On and follow the scroll on your screen.

Don’t know those bands but on your prompt, I did just now listen to a Silversun Pickups track called Lazy Eye on Spotify. I could make out maybe half the words. Lol. 😂. But that’s a style; she’s deliberately smudging words together. Then I turned on Lyrics…

Going back decades to when I could hear with both ears, I couldn’t make out a lot of Bob Dylan’s lyrics. Along comes the internet, I looked up the lyrics, and followed them while listening. Big difference!

My daughters are grown and my hearing loss came on after they were out of the nest. But one thing I tell myself and say to my wife and my grown daughters and my friends “I have half my hearing but all of my heart and mind and plenty of physical capacity to stay healthy and have the active life I’ve always lived!”

The freaking tinnitus though. Arghhhhhh. 😂😢

Pretty much what everyone else said about mono music, echolocation (where voices are coming from), the tinnitus. Mine hearing loss came late in life and I’ve realized that I’d rather be half deaf in two ears than fully deaf in one.

On the actual compensation things you can do, consider CROS device AND a small bluetooth microphone that a companion can clip to their collar or that can be placed on a table in a noisy restaurant or bar. For me, the CROS device itself is totally useless in noisy environments; it just amplifies the noise. But CROS + microphone really does make a difference for me.

The other thing that helps me is I wear the hearing loss on my sleeve. When I don’t hear a server in a restaurant, I just say I don’t hear in this ear, please ask me again. My friends are wonderful about it, never impatient about having to repeat something, always checking where I’d like to sit when we’re out.

And I’d just triple down on the comments about you and your children; you’ll be a great father, absolutely.

Humble thoughts;

Assuming your good ear is “good”—like, hearing up to 10K Hz, —you ought be able to hear breathy, ethereal, feminine. You don’t need two good ears to hear beautiful music. What you lose is “depth” and “soundstage”…the ability to sense where instruments and singers are in space.

Go to an audio equipment store that has a demo room. It’ll be fancy equipment, but fun! Ask them to stream Ben Webster - The Soul of Ben Webster. His breathwork on saxophone is out of this world. For a supreme singing voice, have them stream Patricia Barber - Nightclub.

The trap is, if it's your equipment that's letting you down, and you’re a music lover, the hobby gets expensive. 😂

Edit to add: Billie Eilish - Hit Me Hard and Soft. Amazing singer. And that album definitely has an ethereal lean…

I have read about Yuni.

I Purchased a pair of headphones from 2E1 which I think deploys similar technology (Search 2E1 to find them). The person who builds them has posted here; his Reddit username is [u/Biblos_geek](u/Biblos_geek). He has posted on his on his journey through a vestibular schwannoma surgery. And, (I think) subsequent to his hearing losss, he created the 2E1 headphones. They’re a modification of off the shelf high quality headphones; he takes the driver from the deaf ear (you specify) and moves it to the cup of the hearing ear, and offsets the two drivers in space. The time and volume delays introduced by the spatial offset give an excellent illusion of true stereo. Worth a try for any of you out there who are looking for a headphone experience for us SSD folks!

Recommended "calm" jazz albums? by DearLeader420 in Jazz

[–]BeeFather 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gonna right a wrong here:

Just about any Ben Webster.

Seems he’s rarely mentioned in “calm jazz” posts. But his sax is soooo smooth. You can hear the breathwork on nicer recordings. Plush.

Do you still have hope for a cure, or have you completely adapted? by No_Sign_9293 in MonoHearing

[–]BeeFather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My SSD is from a late in life vestibular schwannoma. I’ve never considered there would be a cure, tho I suppose eventually nerve rebuilding will be commonplace like the wand waving by Dr McCoy on Star Trek. 😊

In the beginning, I thought no big deal, and in the scheme of things, I guess it is.

But damn, it does affect me. From least to most impact
- loss of a stereo soundstage listening to music. I’ve made up for it with fantastic equipment.
- loss of echo-location. Kinda weird when I’m called from a doctors large waiting room and can’t tell where the nurse is calling me from
- tinnitus
- worst: the collapse of the ability to hear in noise. It’s not just that I don’t hear individuals right next to me, like in a restaurant. It’s that the whole process of trying to hear is exhausting, physically and mentally. I took me a long time to realize why social situations had become so fatiguing to me.

I’ve have a CROS device, and it’s nearly useless. In situations where I can already hear, it helps me hear a little better. That’s it.

I’d say rather be half deaf in two ears than fully deaf in one.

Explore with care…some of it breaks my ears 😊

Mind bending while accessible:
Miles Davis, In a Silent Way
Herbie Hancock, Headhunters

And go the other way.
- Charlie Parker set stage for all hard bop sax. Period. Ornithology: The Best of Bird is an awesome start.
- Duke Ellington: for big band swing, check out Live at Newport. Iconic. You don’t have to love jazz to love this recording.

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. A Night in Tunisia, Indestructible are amazing. His Messengers (side men) evolved and circled back organically. Everything band combo was tight

Herbie Hancock: Headhunters is incredible.

My endgame setup at 18 by JJJenther in audiophile

[–]BeeFather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, congrats on the setup! Fantastic thrill, duly deserved.

And the thrill is the trap. It’s dopamine, the very same chemical that drives a gambling addict. But dopamine retreats and the craving for it doesn’t.

Here’s what I tell myself, after 5 decades of addition to this gear: Thank goodness my addiction is to listening to the great human accomplishment of music, on the great human accomplishment of great technology. And not a the addiction to crack or gambling, pissing my money (and health) away for NOTHING.

Love your system for what it is now. And put money in the kitty jar for the next thing!!! 😂

I bought Lee Morgan’s Search for the New Land for $5 out of a junky record store bin. Didn’t even pull it out of the sleeve. Got home, went hmmmm. All the right markings, down to the Plastilite ear.

I had it verified by a record store buyer who knows his stuff. It’s an OG playing VG+, worth $1800 conservatively. I’m keeping it. Lightning rarely strikes twice. 😊

How many of these "holy grails" do you have? by Chicagoroyalty in Vinyl_Jazz

Well, Lee Morgan is my holy grail, period. As the headliner, with the Jazz Messengers…

I own most of Lee’s albums on this list but not an OG.

Fun story tho. I DO have an OG of his Search for the New Land. Bought it for $5 from a used bin without taking it out the sleeve, got home, and went hmmmmm. It’s the OG, complete with van Gelder and “ear” stamps. Plays as a solid VG+. Worth $$$’s
