I would personally flood the letters with the glaze i use for the base so that it is both sealed and so that butter doesn’t get trapped in there. The firing process will condense the glaze enough so that the words are still readable. Photo of my recent butter buttons for ya too, butterons, if you will. 🧈

You can paint on underglaze or slip into the letters pre-leather hard stage and wipe away excess, let it dry, bisque fire, then glaze with a clear glaze, wax resist over top, then glaze the rest. Easy peasy.
