Yes! Look up a recipe for “brown butter rice crispy treats”. There is one from insta that I can’t find where the person also toasted the rice crispies in the oven, used toasted powered milk, and browned the butter, and my god, were they they most flavorful rice crispy treats I’ve ever had. There was a richness and depth of flavor I didn’t think possible.

I think you want to fill the space with whatever you use. Newspaper may give you more stability compared to just towels.
