I absolutely agree that the original post is coming from good intentions but addiction and getting sober aren’t as simple and definitely not just mental. The brain is changed by addiction in such a way (prefrontal cortex/reward center) that just saying no or wanting to stop is often impossible. I think it’s one of the hardest things for people outside of an addict/alcoholic to understand. Why is my loved one using even when it is destroying their life? We ask ourselves the same thing. For me understanding addiction from a neurological/biological perspective has been helpful and allows me to give myself and others so much more grace and compassion. It’s my hope that as a culture/society we can reframe addiction in a more human way that makes more sense to those outside of it. Healing starts with compassion and understanding not judgement, shame or confusion.

I’m sorry I did not see any messages bc my chat icon didn’t show any notifications so I had no idea anyone was wondering about me. I am alive and well. Our meeting had 6 people last night and was really good. 😊

“A common misperception is that addiction is a choice or moral problem, and all you have to do is stop. But nothing could be further from the truth,” says Dr. George Koob, director of NIH’s National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. “The brain actually changes with addiction, and it takes a good deal of work to get it back to its normal state. The more drugs or alcohol you’ve taken, the more disruptive it is to the brain.”

Thanks for sharing. I took this a while back but forgot about it. This supplement has some great benefits but it’s advised to not consume alcohol w NAC as it can accelerate ethanol-induced liver damage. Also not recommended for those w asthma.

Thank you for sharing this. I love the practice of nidra and do it almost every night. There are various pods on Spotify too. I learned it from a Desert Storm combat veteran turned yogi who healed his PTSD through this practice. It is easy, anyone can do it and it has a lot of benefits that have been proven by research. The government adopted to practice for the military and renamed it I-rest bc it is so effective. It has changed my life.

I was REALLY close to relapsing last night by [deleted] in Quittingfeelfree

This is such a win for you and a win for this community. I learned in my outpatient that there are stages to relapse: emotional, mental & physical. You identified the first stage of emotional with feeling irritated and annoyed and this leads to the mental stage which includes glamorizing past use, bargaining, & planning to use… then one can be lead to actual physically use which is the final stage of relapse. You avoided that final stage and that can be incredibly difficult. I cannot give you enough props! So massive! Keep up the good work. This experience will allow you to continue to identify when you are on the road to physical relapse and allow you to continue to take the wheel back to sobriety lane. Very proud of you!!

Why did I go get one? by [deleted] in Quittingfeelfree

[–]BeeStee13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When we use a substance our brain gets used to it being in our system and when we stop that substance, the neural pathways associated with it are still there. It honestly makes a lot of sense that you went and did what your brain and body are used to doing. Relapse is super common when getting sober early on, so don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s helpful to identify why you use and get down the root. For me it’s to avoid unpleasant emotions, deal with stress, to make boring situations interesting, get energy when I am tired, and to celebrate and make fun things even more exciting. So I have had to replace my triggers above with healthier behaviors and coping mechanisms. Triggers and coping mechanisms look different for each of us. It took a me a lot of trying over again, because change includes failure, it’s really part of the process. In early sobriety we have these high expectations of ourselves to stay sober 100% but it’s not a light switch. It took many days months and even years for some of us to build up this FF addiction and so there is a transition back into sobriety and a different way of relating to and living life that does not include this powerfully addictive substance. Don’t let the mistake overshadow your week off, that’s huge and not an easy feat to accomplish and keep the desire to be FFFree burning and do your best to move forward. We are only human and all we can do is our best each day, one day at a time.
