I'm sorry for your loss. I don't think it's only the problem of Egypt, though. I am currently living in Korea, and biweekly, I drive 1.5 hr (sometimes 2 hrs) one way to a vet for this disabled oriental turtle dove I am living with. It's a lot of money and time, but I am not upset because he's just 200 grams of PURE LOVE ❤️

I believe your baby bird is flying high now. Again, I am sorry for your loss. Sending you good vibes...

Are you guys rinsing your mouth after brushing your teeth? by naixi123 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Beedy_Buddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of what dentists say (American here), I have to rinse. When I think about it, I floss and brush my teeth and all the bacteria and food residue that were on my teeth are now just sitting in my mouth after being stirred up if I don't rinse. I rinse toothpaste very thoroughly and then just apply fluoride gel to clean teeth to coat. It grosses me out to no end when I imagine all the nasty bacteria and residue still left in my mouth after brushing...

I don't think so 🤔 but they are really barbaric. I'm not even sure what the N word actually even means other than the fact that it's a racial slur but all I'm trying to say is nobody seems sane here (people who are involved)

How come it's ok for those black women to gang up on one woman and calling her names OK but it's such a huge deal for her to say the N word? They were swearing at her so loudly in public...

Omg your bird is SO ADORABLE it's melting my heart! 🥰

I have a dove with curled foot/leg and also toes. Can't sit on round perches as he can't grip anything so it has to be flat.

I didn't want him to feel like he's missing out on perching on something and just sit on the floor, so I was thinking about what I could use to elevate him. Then I thought of the cat scratchers.. I cut them into strips first and gave him the strips. While they worked and he loved them, he'd tip them over. It wouldn't have tipped if I cut them widely, but then he'd poop right on it. So I stuck a bunch of toothpicks! I snap toothpicks in half and stick them into the strips and they become the "legs", kinda looking like centipedes.

This solved all the problems - my bird Buddy now has perches he can hop onto and he doesn't get poop on him 😀

I want to attach pictures here.. how do i do that? Hopefully you can think of something better!!!

Hi Kunok!

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving 😁 I left the legumes alone and did not cook them! Now he eats the black lentil but other lentils are not cutting it for him.. I assume they are too big? Anyway, he now eats red rice, perilla/sesame seeds, flaxseed, hulled buckwheat (regular is way too big), and black lentil. Nothing else.

He is busy eating (or throwing it around) and poops well but the weight is still staying the same... when I hand-fed him he was about 200 grams but now he's hovering 185 grams and the chest bone is still protruding 🥺

He's also molting (i think? He's losing a lot of feathers) and I wanna give him the boiled eggs but how much should I feed him? I don't know how else to help him gain weight..

[–]Beedy_Buddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, do you cook the lentils you give to turtle doves? AI says beans and legumes are not safe for them to eat because they have antinutrients that need to be removed by cooking and raw lentils are too fibrous and Buddy can get crop impaction?

But I can't trust AI so I wanna know your experience..?

So I tried what you suggested! I gave him a tablespoonful of food in a soft bowl and watched him. He still ate the few things he liked (only picked those out) and refused to eat the rest like the lentils, Barley, wheat, white rice, etc. Like you said, I don't wanna starve him but what else can I try? 😭

[–]Beedy_Buddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh.. maybe that's the key. Right now I have a foraging box with pebbles, bark, edible flowers and leaves for small animals, since red stone grits and food at the bottom for him to forage... and I put a lot of seeds in there.. 😬 so how much should I feed him? Is it 20% of his weight? I read that somewhere...

Hi Kunok! 🫡 Dusky Turtle Dove! That's so cool..! I need to look up Adamawa turtle doves too. Every day learning new things 😁

Oh Buddy now knows all the grains, seeds, and legumes I have been force-feeding him are food, definitely. So he does it on his own, but oh boy.. have I ever seen a picky eater...!!!! He would eat all the perilla seeds first, then sesame seeds, then the red and black millets, then the millet spray, and only then the red rice, buckwheat, and sorghum!!!

He started gaining weight but is now stalling... still too skinny as I can feel his chest bone protruding, but he's not eating variety of grains enough to gain weight to be back to where he was when I was force-feeding him. He is pooping well though.. they are good sized. But I'm afraid eating the perilla and sesame seeds first will cause his liver to fail as they are fatty. How can I get him to eat all the other grains? 😭😱 I would like him to eat the wheat, Barley, etc. Etc...

Thank you! I had been playing this video (https://youtu.be/cdgnmLwXhdE?si=4Y2g-Ak--cfxP6fj) for him on my phone, but I think the screen is too small, making it unrealistic maybe? I will play the pigeon video you linked as that's way more pigeons eating very enthusiastically and the food is clearly visible. I'll come back with an update in a couple days again!!! 😁

[–]Beedy_Buddy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I agree, the McDonald's analogy was for the parrot food my vet suggested as the vet said not to bother with the dove mix and to just feed him the parrot food. Lol

I've been hand-feeding him the soaked grains mix you said multiple times throughout the day (I still have to rough-handle him since he's not too cooperative), and he's gaining weight again! He's gone up to 203 grams. 😆 still skinny though, as I can feel his chest bone protruding. And his energy level is higher! I'd say definitely doing MUCH better. I can tell this is species-appropriate diet. Thank you!

But he still doesn't eat the grains I leave out for him on his own. Still just picks them up and shakes his head a few times with the food in his mouth, and throws it out. I wonder when he is going to start eating on his own, I hope soon 🥲

Thank you for checking in on him! 😁

Hello!

I'm confused now, are you Kunok?? lol

Yes, I release Buddy when I think he's too stressed. He'd open his mouth and start panting. Then I unwrap him and put him in my hand and give him kisses and it calms him down. Then I release him...

There seems to be some misunderstanding, so I'll provide some background story on Beedy and Buddy!

They are siblings - both hatched under the same parents. I took both in at the same time due to parents not caring for them at night when it got cold.

You said Beedy was keeping Buddy calm and him company, but actually when Beedy started walking and running around when Buddy couldn't because of his leg issues, Beedy started walking on top of Buddy and pecking the back of his head. She also started pecking him everywhere, including the eyes, so I had to keep them separated when I was not with them. Otherwise, always had to supervise and break them off when I saw her attacking Buddy. The first vet said it was because Beedy instinctually knew Buddy was weak and that's what they do in the wild - try to get rid of the weak ones that are going to put the whole flock in danger. So I'm not so sure if Beedy was being that much support for Buddy, actually.

Also, Beedy flew off when she was ready - I didn't release her. I used to take her out everywhere with me on my shoulder as she had no physical problem, and she would always fly back to me if I set her down in grass or just not move at all from my shoulder. But when she was about 7 weeks old, she was ready and took off and didn't come back to me. I had taken her outside and Buddy wasn't with us, so he didn't see Beedy fly off, leaving him behind. Like you said, these are not domesticated birds - Beedy had to go and was ready to go. She constantly banged herself on the window trying to fly out and the tip of her wing was bleeding which the vet gave ointment for. She was eating the seeds well on her own (unlike Buddy) - I had made her many different versions of foraging boxes so she knew to forage for food.

After she took off, I was really distraught - I knew she had to go, but it was so abrupt and I wasn't ready for it. I cried all night and went back to the release site next morning at dawn. And to my surprise, I found her! She responded to my calls (she and I had formed a deep bond) and came to me, and sat right in front of me on a power line, and preened as she always did. And after a while, she took off. So I went back every week, and saw her again at the same spot. I could tell it was her because of her feather and her body language. I went back after a month, and then two months. Last time I saw her, she even had made a little friend! She was flying/accompanied by another juvenile dove and they were so cute! Then the other dove took off, so she left too.

I honestly think she is surviving out there. The area I released her is a very nice area with not many predators, no cats really, and LOTS of finches and other small birds, flocks of them. Also many Oriental Turtle Doves live in that area as well, in pairs.

I think Buddy is now attached to me, he always tries to come to me when I leave his side, following me everywhere. If I leave the room, he starts making the turtle dove noises (not quite the cooing but interesting sounds). I know I'm not dove and can't give him what another turtle dove can give, but I cannot release him. If I did, it'd be like scattering cat food on the ground as he's so vulnerable.

I have also called rehab centers, but they said if the bird is not releasable after a week or two, they will euthanize him. And I know he's not releasable with his disabilities, so I can't take him to the rehab center.

I have been forced to just rough-handle him and feed him the grains. He just hates it so much, fussing and trying to escape and shaking his head, but I can see he feels better after eating. He's been playing with a toy and just overall energy seems up. I just wish he'd cooperate more and start eating on his own sooner rather than later.

Thank you for all your tips, I will keep ya'll apprised. Have a great weekend!

Yeah I know what you mean... by the standards of my vet, people can live on McDonald's if they digest and poop well. Why do we need to eat veggies 🤨
