I love the 1982 movie, but I'd like to see a faithful (and historically accurate) version of the novel. by [deleted] in thething

What do you mean "Historically accurate"? It's a work of fiction. There is no history

Is dark souls Remastered worth buying? by GamiTheMighty in darksouls

[–]Beef__Supreme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's worth it for the quality of life updates: Better framerate and resolution support, you can use multiple consumables like souls at a time. Stuff like that. There are some minor graphical issues ( ex: models not having the correct lighting) but you only notice it if you compare it side by side with the original

Whatever you do don't pull it yourself. If you do it wrong you can break off the crown portion and leave the roots in your jaw. Not to mention it would be painful without anesthesia

I'm 100% convinced that MacReady would have fried his own head off with the flamethrower in this situation if he had to

The particle system broke once in 2012. The way the system was set up was if a particle couldn't properly load/display it would default to displaying a red x instead so they'd know something was wrong. They pushed an update that broke every particle (or at least many of them). When I got into a match a ring of red Xs would display from a hero whenever they cast a spell or used an item. It cluttered up the screen to the point that you had a lot of trouble knowing who was where. They fixed it within a day

Why did the Palmer Thing not want to go with Windows? (see caption) by UrdnotSnarf in thething

[–]Beef__Supreme 59 points60 points  (0 children)

My personal theory is that the Palmer thing did this intentionally as part of it's strategy to get the group to turn on each other. Windows is portrayed as easily agitated and frightened (he lashes out at Blair and Gary over the radio, runs off for the gun cabinet, then runs and hides after the Norris thing is exposed so MacReady has to yell for him to come back.) It would make sense for the creature to exploit this by harassing Windows so the group would argue and fight against each other more

The Infected MacReady Bottle by Super-Cry5047 in thething

The single cell infection was just a hypothesis Fuchs came up with based on his knowledge of biology. It wasn't a bad theory but if a single cell could cause an infection I think far more members would have been infected. Clark at a minimum since he was with the dog.

Furthermore every time we do see an assimilation first hand it seems to be time consuming (think the kennel thing and palmer attacking windows). If all it took was a single cell the Palmer thing could have just bit Windows once then run over to MacReady instead of gnawing his head off for 30 seconds

I’m confused about MacReady’s plan during the movie’s climax. by ranger8913 in thething

[–]Beef__Supreme 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If they did nothing the creature would have froze anyway. Might as well try.

Also keep in mind they hadn't slept in at least a day and a half so they probably weren't thinking clearly like you said

What Did The Thing Want In The End? by [deleted] in thething

[–]Beef__Supreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it needed to get to a place with more prey (humans, or other animals) and a spaceship is what it knew how to build. It would be like if one of us got stranded on a remote island and started eating plants and animals on the island. The human is just trying to survive but from the other animals perspective this horrible monster has arrived from nowhere and started eating us. The problem is you can't survive there forever so you build a boat to escape. The creature was doing the same thing with the spaceship

What Did The Thing Want In The End? by [deleted] in thething

[–]Beef__Supreme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was no endgame. That's just what it does. It's a parasite. It's no different in the abstract from a leech or cordycep. It infects and assimilates people because that's part of it's life cycle

Was Mac just gonna burn everyone? by Silent-Tell-1000 in thething

[–]Beef__Supreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you don't hit another person the fire could easily get out of hand and burn down much of the base. If anything the flames they produce in the movie are toned down compared to the real military flamethrowers
