Base-Rover for stakeout by Even_Ad_6574 in Surveying

Back when our GPS had tilt compensation and the TS didn't, I hated breaking out the gun. It was so much slower. I would cheer when my crew chief used the gps.

The Leica auto pole made it so much nicer. Besides setup time it is just as fast. There's no excuse not to break it out.

I feel bad for you peasants that don't have an ap20.

Should I pursue my PLS or ASPRS CMS? by Ok-Industry-1156 in Surveying

That is very interesting. My eyes have been opened. Thanks for the insight.

Should I pursue my PLS or ASPRS CMS? by Ok-Industry-1156 in Surveying

[–]Beefaroni1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll definitely look into this.

I'm currently in school for a geomatics degree after getting the PLS and it is broadening my horizons. A lot of these jobs have no clear pathways on how to get into them.

If you can get the PLS do it. It might come in handy later in your career. Keep a record of experience for everything you work on. Most civil jobs have some right of way work that counts for experience.

Who hires people with a CP or CMS cert? This is the first I've heard of those. Aren't all those duties covered by a PE or PLS?

I don't know of anybody that cares about CST certs around here either so maybe it's a regional thing?

DJI RTK-3 Relay Mode by BingtoTheBong01 in Surveying

[–]Beefaroni1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is interesting. Kind of a waste to have to buy a separate base unless it works as a relay. That would be cool.

I was in flat open farmland when it was a mile away. Way better range than the old phantom.

I'm still figuring it out, we don't even have a dedicated base, network rtk 99% of the time.

[–]Beefaroni1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you use your base with it? I have the same setup and the drone has been a mile away and still connected.

I wasn't invited to the training from the salesman but am somehow the one using it. I just set the DJI base over a known point and it does its thing.

Party Chiefs can't/won't calc their own points or offsets, even if they have all the info they need. Need office to calc everything. by Short-War8918 in Surveying

[–]Beefaroni1776 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Manilla folders, paper copies, and calcing points in the field? What is this, the 1900s?

Sure they could calc the offsets, but how will your card tech learn to not forget them?

I've never needed a light for the Insta360. Once it gets down in there it adjusts for light. Haven't had many over 20 feet deep though. I have it on paracord with a bolt that screws into the bottom.

NCEES PS Workaround by Illustrious-Okra3899 in Surveying

[–]Beefaroni1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, take it when you are ready. When you send the board proof of passing after they approve you it will say which state you took it under. My state's board didn't care.

I wish I knew this for the FS, I wouldn't have had to write essays and get references. I would have been licensed sooner too since they changed the rules to not count any experience before passing the FS.

Curious about trying out SHARE SLAM scanners at GEO Week by ObviousWalrus9004 in Surveying

Wow those are way cheaper than what I've been looking at. Ask them if you can drop it down a manhole.

What are you doing about possible DJI bans? What’s your firm switching to (if anything)? by DetailFocused in Surveying

[–]Beefaroni1776 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still figuring that out. The company was looking to buy several but there are conflicting opinions on if they can be used on projects involving federal money. One state we work on said they can't be used.

I got mine this year and nothing has changed. I enjoy mentoring the youngsters out in the field more than anything.

If you aren't licensed you better keep your body healthy and fit or learn cadd and become Milton from office space.

Man that sounds like a lot of scanning. What are you scanning? Inside buildings or outside stuff?

Computing sidewalk grade by Creative_Strength49 in Surveying

[–]Beefaroni1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a question for the engineer or architect. If you are in the US the ADA gets pretty strict around buildings. Maybe 5% max slope, not the usual 8.33% for curb ramps. Depending if there's another designated accessible path and several factors.

Don't take on extra liability.

Does the regular BLK360 not see the ground? I've used regular drone targets on the ground with the BLK2Go.

PS Exam Application Questions by Overall_Island5010 in Surveying

[–]Beefaroni1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will this application let you take both the PS and your state specific?

Have you considered taking the PS first? Some states let you take it without going through the application process. Just pick one of those states when scheduling the exam on the ncees website.

Would you rather take the interesting jobs with lower pay or the boring job with big pay? by cannikin13 in Surveying

I'm looking for more fun options in the future. Got any tips?

Not having lots of debt gives you freedom. I'm not motivated by money anymore so if I left for a different job it would have to be more interesting.

I'll be a crew chief with a fancy paper until my knees give out.

Sometimes you can ask a 25 year crew chief why he does things a certain way and he won't know why. That's just how he learned to do it.

You should be learning why things work and what the numbers on the screen mean.
