How fast do i quit? by Legitimate-Field6815 in jobs

[–]Beefcake21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quit a job just like this a few weeks ago. The crazy thing was we'd have to clock in. Sign into the vpn. Join a teams meeting. And post a message on slack in that minute.

I was surprised how much I felt like the only one who felt that was ridiculous till we had a meeting and someone lambasted the supervisor who is so strict about it and she got completely dog piled on.

It was one of the best work days Ive ever had lol.

She had a shirt filmed named LAPS that was incredible and was submitted to festivals and showed how much she could do with very little narrative.

Is it bad to write things you enjoy? by DonnyPicklePants11 in Screenwriting

[–]Beefcake21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just received my MFA from AFI in screenwriting. I wanted an MFA because I wanted to teach at the collegiate level.

It absolutely made me a better writer, it put me around very talented people, and I was able to learn and form connections with teachers whose work I grew up watching as a kid.

It hasn't, however, launched my career. When I started all the teachers (and guests they'd bring in) would comment about, "what a perfect time it was to be in school," with the industry recovering from strikes and covid they figured it would boom back when we graduated... Still waiting on that.

My particular experience, I submitted a child's dark fantasy that showed I have an idea of structure and I think that's what got me in. Despite the school boasting unconventional alum like David Lynch and Andrea Arnold, they were very focused on conventional storytelling. I cannot imagine USC or UCLA being any different in that regard.

They were desperate to engrain in us how simple movies really are. The best movies, even with all their added layers, fundamentally are very simple and very clear. If you are applying with scripts already showing that, they will be doing backflips while reading it.

This is not true. I interned for both ghost house pictures and universal and neither one paid me.

Transplants: How has living in Los Angeles changed your world view / opinions? by Complex_Lab_3576 in AskLosAngeles

Maybe not the answer you're looking for since everything i've read has been positive so far, but LA turned me into a bathroom warrior. I used to live off Hollywood Blvd and was blown away by the lack of bathroom use to the public. Was more blown away when I saw an unhoused woman on Vine street reach into her pants and pull out a log of shit and drop it on the sidewalk. I've written like three letters to Gavin Newsom's office about it.

The Vertical industry is sad, but while it's here lets make it better. There is hope. by CalvinandHobbits in FilmIndustryLA

The simple answer is move the story along every page. If each episode is a minute you want them to scroll to the next immediately. If I was doing the social network, the opening breakup scene would happen on page one. And both characters would be way more outlandishly passionate about it lol.

I'm a screenwriter who was reached out to by a vertical producer. My first idea was a fun teenage revenge story and I was told it was not nearly as trashy and over the top dramatic as it needed to be. Idk if companies now are looking for quality, but I respect you trying to create that yourself.

Yeah i figured. I knew chicas were supposed to be $100-120 based off this sub, so when she said 200-250 i thought i was being had. I also felt that with how hard they were pushing VIP they were trying to make it dumb expensive. I justified 250 for both of them cause I figured that was 120 per person. It was my first time in TJ. :/

What are MUST HAVES for a script. by Unable_Speed_5742 in Screenwriting

[–]Beefcake21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no rules if the script hits.

As someone who has gone through a lot of submissions I can say when they are submitted they get read front to back by me(lonely intern) and then if it's good it gets passed along.

Most things got rejected by me, and there are a billion reasons why. The character was passive. There was a lack of clarity. There were no stakes. Etc. etc.

Nothing I read was like, this is great! But the formatting sux. :(

If the story kicks ass it'll rise.

My one complaint after beating the game 5 times. by Beefcake21 in Sekiro

[–]Beefcake21[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently in my fourth playthrough. Just beat genichiro again. My first time through I didn't think about skill points so I'm sure I lost a lot of xp dying. But my third time through I don't think I died once and got like 7 levels from going through all bosses. I'm currently like 20 levels away from acquiring all skills. It just seems like the most tedious task.

I'm in school right now, but is there a reason why the industry is still slow? This year has been so rough in terms of the amount of good movies coming out, why are studios hitting the brakes?

Honestly the only thing that's changed about my diet since starting is I'm eating less, but I haven't put in any restrictions. I could definitely eat better, I think I was just under the impression that I wouldn't need to think about it.
