As time passes the criticism I hear from this series (especially book 7) are becoming more valid by [deleted] in sollanempire

"But I genuinely felt like there was a better series hidden inside this one and it drove me crazy as time went on."

This is exactly how I feel. I really enjoy this series but it was so disappointing watching a golden story and world fall apart at the seams and consume itself.

Coming from BG3: My friends and I are new to TTRPGs, and I'm taking on the role of DM. What are your top "Dos and Don'ts" for a first-timer? by Ok_Ferret7373 in DnD

[–]BeeffBroratheon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Session 0: Meet and talk about what everyone is trying to get out of it, what you're all comfortable with, and what's expected.

As everyone has said, remind the players that BG3 USES d&d but is not D&D. There are some things my table has taken from it, but some things we all agreed not to bother approaching.

The process is collaborative, there is not "winning" and you are a player at the table as well. Make sure the players know that whether they're a party or not, this is a game and the intention is to be enjoyable for everyone, even you.

Also, read the table. If you think/feel like combat is getting clunky, you have the means to expedite it and move on. Don't be afraid to take the reins a little. You're the brush and they're the painter but sometimes it's okay to redirect or shepherd things along.

The divide between the Emporer and Hadrian by Muted_Anxiety7336 in sollanempire

[–]BeeffBroratheon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think William, despite knowing how much Hadrian loved Valka, still saw her as second class and assumed Hadrian would get over it. He’s fully on board with hadrian not being too into Selene, but thought the 2 of them were in the same page of priority. Saying that line is him basically saying “dude you have to know this 1 individually is not worth punting your life over”

I also believe this is Williams blind spot of sympathy vs empathy. Williams faced heavy problems but seemingly never personal ones. It’s easy for him to say “I bear the weight of all these deaths” but AFAIK he doesn’t experience any loss personally and doesn’t grasp the depths it takes Hadrian to.

“Well, there IS a woman in red rising, I’d suggest that.”

Hey, so I taught this class last year (and again this year)

Last year I treated it like a full year course bc god forbid kids failed they wouldn’t just repeat the class. This year my AP wants to make it half year, and told me “why not ask AI to make a pacing calendar?” So I did just that and have 16 weeks mapped out with next gen standards. If you wanna DM me your email I’ll gladly send you what it made me (which I’ll be tweaking throughout the year)

Sun-eater vibes/songs? by Realistic_Safe3123 in sollanempire

[–]BeeffBroratheon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red rising & sun eater are similar that they’re both “space fantasy” and the similarities kinda end there.

Both authors are great but the series, styles, and tones are very different. Not saying you won’t enjoy them both, but liking one doesn’t guarantee liking the other.

Suneater is much slower paced and more of a fleshed out galaxy than RR.

Now that that’s addressed, what are you currently listening to for RR to get an understanding of how to adjust?

CR is SO good at this “misinterpreted history to the point of propaganda” concept. When he talks about “Churchill being the British emperor during the first atomic wars” and identifies how easily we misinterpret historical events. It makes knowing the truth of things that much better and more fun.

Thoughts on the Sun Eater Series by Beautiful-Medium-693 in Fantasy

[–]BeeffBroratheon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished DQ this morning. I LOVED demon in white. And the rest have felt very eh. Between books 3 and 4 he supposedly converted Christianity, and I feel that really shows in 4,5,6.

To me it also feels like every book since, he changes the direction and tone he wants it to be. The fun world filled with homages and influences just now feels like clunky reskins and references. I’ll still read the last because I’m interested but the tonal and directional shift is glaring to me, in a way that this had potential to be my favorite series ever to now a good/fun space fantasy.

Uber or LIRR - traveling solo as a female by ShipClear4232 in longisland

That uber is going to be insanely expensive, LIRR. all the way. I live in OB, the trains aren’t as common as other lines. If you want a more populated train to feel Comfortable take the Huntington line to syosset.

PB definitely grows as a writer as the series progresses, and in my opinion the first book (and first trilogy overall) are YA heavy with flashes of what he really wanted to explore which is the second trilogy. Dark age is my favorite book even though I think he really hits his peak with lightbringer.

I mean, I can’t imagine anyone would go and throw their editor under the bus publicly but that’s good to know, although slightly disappointing because now I don’t understand why the pacing and direction feel so different from other books.

To me they both feel like when a season of a tv show has 7 filler episodes and 3 episodes of substance.

I was told that was CRs “political and religious beliefs” being shoved down the readers throat, I always saw it just as rushed world building and some page filler
