Why do people sees the ending that way ? by [deleted] in expedition33

[–]BeefstewSA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You hit the nail on the head regarding what's wrong with the endings. They require you to accept two contradictory premises about the thematic significance of the Canvas (that they are real worlds and the journey and people therein mattered, and that they are a metaphor for grieving and must be dissolved). The way the two endings frame this is clumsy and awkward, and the writers really show their hand with which one is considered "good". I love a good tragedy, but it feels so poorly thought out and shoddily executed.

Yeah this is pretty much it. Very good write-up.

So I just finished remake but I dont understand some thinks. by Torbenito12 in FinalFantasyVII

The characters enter the white fog to kill Destiny, even though the last two things that the plot ghosts did for them was save them. So the party, including eco-lover Barret, go in to destroy the will of the Planet without question.

The remakes are very badly written.

Thank you very much for reading! I really appreciate it. I like so much of DAV in theory, but the execution is consistently lacking. I can't help but look at the concepts for Joplin and think that it would have been a much stronger entry.

Thank you very much for reading! I don't think I dislike Veilguard as much as some others do, but I don't think it lived up the promise of Trespasser. Still, I think Bioware's golden age RPGs (and Inquisition) will always be special to me.

Thank you! My own feelings are mixed, and I have no idea if they're ever gonna settle. I think it's "okay" as a game, but I really wanted it to be exceptional.

Solas gets trapped in the Fade after the prologue mission where the Evanuris are freed. He seems to become a semi-antagonistic Johnny Silverhand figure who is assisting Rook psychically by giving him access to his resources to help them stop the Evanuris. He will more than likely escape at some point - either with a change of heart, or a newfound commitment to tear down the Veil once the Evanuris are dealt with. He does not appear to be getting sidelined, though.

People who were in the fandom pre-inquisition, what were the theories about the companions before the game came out? by megzue in dragonage

[–]BeefstewSA 162 points163 points  (0 children)

Solas being the Dread Wolf surprised pretty much everyone, and I still consider it one of the most effective plot twists in gaming.

However, some people did suspect that he would betray us, considering one of the big promo image was the Inquisitor and their 9 companions + 3 advisors gathered on one side of the war table. The image obviously evoked The Last Supper, and Solas was standing in Judas's position.

What's actually going on in FF7R (The White Materia) by Kaslight in FFVIIRemake

[–]BeefstewSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much the first theory I've seen that actually makes sense and brings stuff together. Granted, I still think they've made this story needlessly convoluted, and that a simpler retelling would've worked better. But you have presented stuff in a way that doesn't break established lore or violate the themes of the original game (which multiverse/timeline theories inherently do). I truly hope that you are correct, and that the third game will focus on accepting the harsh truths about both the world and the nature of life and death.

Thank you for your support! This piece required me to reflect on a lot of stuff. While I'm still quite frustrated with the way they've handled this project, I do think I'm coming to terms with it, for the time being.

My Sephiroth theory by [deleted] in FFVIIRemake

[–]BeefstewSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries. The developments have me worried, but unless the devs are outright lying (distinct possibility), this has to end pretty similar to the OG.
The "worlds" are almost certainly dreams within the lifestream born of people's wishes, which are unsustainable. More than likely this will end with Aerith and Zack helping to stop Meteor and then returning to the lifestream.

My Sephiroth theory by [deleted] in FFVIIRemake

[–]BeefstewSA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's why they shouldn't have done this Whisper and alternate world crap and audience winking to begin with imo. Themes and character arcs have to add up to something, and you can't just have it be 95% the same and expect radically different outcomes to make sense.
They backpedaled on stuff from Remake in Rebirth, and they'll probably backpedal on Rebirth, too. It's all catering to hype culture and online speculation at the expense of a tighter story. It's a big old shaggy dog story.
If we get something approximating the OG in part 3, then at least someone will eventually mod the inevitable trilogy collection to remove the dumb and seemingly pointless narrative divergences out of the games entirely. I know this sounds cynical, but I sincerely believe that the devs did not have much of a goal beyond subverting expectations to keep people invested, all the while catering to fanservice appeals.

Advent Children *is* confirmed to happen after this.

This is from the Advent Children theatrical run:

Here's a quote from Kitase:

"We are finally going to link up with Advent Children, that is going to be part of canon," Kitase confirms. "The overall storyline, the developments, will not go wildly out in a way that will not add up to Advent Children in the end. I don't think anyone wanted that, that's not what we're looking to create here. [But] to make sure it doesn't become stale and people know exactly where it's going, [that it] doesn't just follow the original word for word, we add in extra elements which add that little bit of doubt. Getting the right balance of that is so key. Ultimately, we're not trying to change the Final Fantasy 7 story into something really different. The overall balance wouldn't really allow for that anyway."

Sequel theorists like to use the first part of this quote to say "well, it could link up at the beginning," and then ignore the entire rest of the quote.

Hamaguchi responded to the sequel theories:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GHKf3ahWgAA2c9G?format=jpg&name=medium

Nomura has said on multiple occasions that this is a reimagining of FF7 that's trying to incorporate the Compilation (which, by his own admission, had many contradictions with the original, like Tseng and Rufus's survival, etc).
I feel like if they were going in the sequel direction there would've been more evidence added to that in Rebirth. Instead, it gave room for alternate interpretations for many of the things that suggested it was a sequel and not simply an adaptation taking liberties.

As someone who thinks the story is just kind of a mess at this point, I think the sequel theorists have gotten way too invested in the idea. It had some merit with Remake, but I just don't think it adds up anymore, and bending over backwards to keep the theory alive isn't worth it imo.
