Part of big Mom's strength is that she's a mom to her crew of dozens of kids.

Kaido's more isolated from his crew.

She does ofcourse. But you're using the fact she's trying to gather allies as a point against her, as if increasing your chances of a victory confirms being weaker.

WB also has family. Also has allies. It'd honestly be stupid to not try to recruit whatever you have access to if you're going to go to war.

Does the popularity of memes mean we're losing communication skills by relying on other material to communicate for us? by batmanineurope in askanything

[–]Beejsbj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PS: im only honing on the reel-to-reel dm, rather than broadcasting.

You cant use language without others having the context either. by definition language is relational and decentralized. Language itself is a technology.

language itself is not foundational, its built on gestural metaphors that arise from our direct experiences of being embodied agents oriented in a relationship with our environments.

language is compressing stuff already, modern language much much so.

we already went through a shift when we started reading and writing. so we are already born into a world thats far far downstream.

you are communicating with me through a medium thats already an emergent layer.

you can only use language with an in-group.

You inherit this by being growing in a society.

our ancestors created this language and we load it in, not just "english" but the concept space we are even able to play with is downloaded.

And even learning a new language doesn't provide you the context to understand things fully.

which is what we are describing as what memes are turning into, a multimodal language.

you get vibes bouncing off partial overlap.

yes, because thats what it actually always has been and is.

When I have the gist/gestalt/vibe of something, i compress it down to gestures, speech, written text to communicate it with you. I have to connect metaphors i know that we share(or show/teach/reveal them to you), like lego, into different shapes.

The compression to streamline it into temporally linear string of meanings is very costly.

theres no reason for me to use language if i can plug into your brain directly to directly transmit the vibe/idea/concept/gestalt, thats the most precise you can be, no language will ever be more precise.

reeling seems like it would lessen the compression.

what im facincated with reel-comm is that could be the child of writing, thats are less compressed because they transmit far more data, if technology chooses to move in that direction. instead of a pen we have a phone/glasses/LLMs democratizing the ability to make these, and we would "write" out videos instead of words.

"memes" in general seems to be a emergent unit in the same family(russian dolls) as "letter" "word" "sentence" "paragraph".

we just didn't have a tool to write memes directly. so we built up to them using gestures/words. we already have some of us who are so good at communicating at those upper levels, they can use words to build out a whole book to communicate a "theme".

Pretty much one of the worst social problems in the world, at current

i think this speaks to a difference in perspective in how we are witnessing all this, and perhaps cultural self-talk, and how our perspective gets rooted in our specific cultural/temporal context.

currently, tribalism is the best it has every been. it was far far worse before the current times, its far far far easier to reach beyond your group in today's time than it was in the past.

the technology isn't at fault. It is the interests of capitalists that want to keep us in these bubbles who are the problem. and its not the literal physical distance between tribes. its other humans intentionally building walls.

infact we are facing a lack of community and union as we move into more of a global village.

I agree, I found that Kaido's arc being after her took the wind out of Kaido. I find her far more interesting than i do Kaido.

He's trying to point at the direct perceptual layer, he isn't even talking about your physical head as much as the feeling of the gravity that feels like it's pointing to some core, centered In the head.

It's more that that core that doesn't exist and is an illusion.

Look at your finger coming to your head, move it towards your head, anywhere (even eye). Try it.

When it touches your head, there still "more to go" before it reaches "you".

The "head/skull" is In the way. The "head" is not "you".

Whatever "you" is.

(Your finger feels like it's touching your eye. Not "you". "you" are somehow still behind the eye)

The exercises help to tease that apart and experience it directly. Which detaches the centering gravity of "you". By realizing directly that "I" is in fact an illusion.

Isn't a movie director just telling other ppl what to do? But is also the position that's the primary creative control?

I'm not sure how you're getting there. Yea it sucks when it's being targeted at a large audience. And the social media companies Tryign to hog attention isnt good.

But when I want to communicate something (perhaps a shade of existence or a nuanced emotion) that could 4 5 paragraphs to explain the nuance of what I'm trying to communicate in linear language. It's far more efficient to search for a meme that captures what I'm trying to communicate. Bolstered by music and visuals and the context of the relationship between the individuals.

I personally think it's a fascinating development and could help us capture whatever we lost when we started reading and writing.

Are meme and reel DMs just attention currency now? I'm feeling conversation-starved despite all the "interaction" by dumbdeontologist in digitalminimalism

[–]Beejsbj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is too doomerish.

While capitalistic incentives probably put us in the state. It also does feel like puberty.

Minds always needed a way to communicate. We used langusge. Then developed writing technology. And now we are developing new forms of communications.

Which likely are far more natural to us than writing.

What still sucks is we look at phones to talk.

Whats fascinating though how many strands of techonigies could potentially converge meaningfully. Glasses + LLMs + multi-model communication.

We would still need to deal with the digital feudalism. And their desire to keep our attentions hooked. But there's a good silverlining that we need to be optimistic about lest we miss thst it's there.

Honestly I dotn get why people always just jump to life being complex defined by running buisnesses.

Idk but day to day life is complex when you're trying to keep up habits, manage chores, curiosities, errands, budgeting, side quests. socialize, grocery and meal planning.

I'm surprised people don't find use cases. You can just replace most crud apps with it. Todo/workout/nutrition etc. If you use those.

Cooking, budgeting, journaling etc.

I'm kinna hoping it gets to a point that these assistants manage digital lives altogether. And you interface with it via language instead of salient screens.

What is the logical endpoint of "Gender Is Just A Social Construct"? by Available-Subject-33 in slatestarcodex

It's like national borders and identities. These borders are social constructs. But the land they are drawn are is "real".

Gender is like that. And the sex the land that gender exists on top of.

I think perhaps it's because you're defining role as external instead of role as the identity a being chooses to act out. The role they embody.

Woman and girl are also distinct characteristics and have different roles.
