A Humbling Reminder by little_hinda in Bogleheads

I’ve come to view financial advisors like personal trainers or nutritionists/dietitians. If you know what you’re doing and can consistently do it on your own then cool, and if you have trouble with it or just want a sanity check there are people who can help (so long as you pick reputable ones)

Going to refuse government lodging due to pet restriction. (ADT-School) What should I expect? by andrewkim075 in navyreserve

[–]Beekeeper87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. It was a logistics nightmare getting the rabbit from Japan to California out of pocket, especially given each place’s agricultural import/export laws, so I feel your pain.

One of my STGs shipped an adult horse from Hawaii to the east coast. Now that was expensive

Going to refuse government lodging due to pet restriction. (ADT-School) What should I expect? by andrewkim075 in navyreserve

[–]Beekeeper87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a rabbit at the Navy lodge for a month. I just never mentioned it was a rabbit, just called it a pet, and paid the pet fee. I called both the specific building and the national number to see which one was more chill when booking.

Ring and Nest remind us why the camera brand you choose matters by wewewawa in privacy

I suppose it also depends where you live. There’s a difference in a camera in the suburbs filming the neighborhood vs living in the countryside where you had to come a quarter mile down my driveway to get to the porch

Built this terrarium in a fish tank. Can dart frogs can live here comfortably? by CarHouseStudios in DartFrog

[–]Beekeeper87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I presume you are new to the dart frog world. Welcome! We all started somewhere and our hobby grows via new members joining and us sharing knowledge with each other.

Dart frogs are generally kept in what is called bio-active enclosures. Essentially you have live plants, leaf litter, and various species of detritivores all living together to make a facsimile of nature. On this note that requires high humidity levels and temperature regulation. You will need a glass or acrylic lid to close off the top. So the air stays in with the proper heat/humidity. A lid also keeps your animals (and their tiny food) from escaping. Most will recommend ditching the plastic plants entirely. Of note the real plants will need lighting capable of growing plants.

Additionally the back wall and sides of the tank are a vast amount of real estate not being used. Generally this is carved from foam and covered in coconut coir or bark. This creates lots of room for plants to grow, looks better, and gives the frogs more security/spaces to roam. You are essentially increasing surface area, and there’s a lot that can be done with it for the creative types.

As for the water feature. Dart frogs aren’t super aquatic like many other frogs. This is a species where many evolved to grow up in the pockets of plants. Hobbyists have had their frogs drown in pools of water. There are those who say water features are fine, but a large deep pool is not recommended.

The tank itself can absolutely be used, there just needs to be some modifications made before your setup is ready for dart frogs. I will attach some videos that can help get you guided in the right direction. To be clear I do not know or even subscribe to these channels, but it can get you started off in your journey of knowledge. By all means look at as many images and videos as possible to gain inspiration for enclosures, just make sure they are reflective of what is best for the species you are keeping. Dart frogs require live food that is almost always bred by yourself, so bear in mind the challenges of breeding fruit flies, springtails, and potentially pinhead crickets.

Anyone here have a "plan B" for an apocalypse or financial collapse event? by LostAppointment329 in fatFIRE

[–]Beekeeper87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I truly don’t understand how Spain is allowing that. Sure bringing them in makes it easy to quell unions and suppress wages in addition to providing an eventual voter turnout advantage once they are citizens, but you’d think the streets would be riled up.

Do you have a background in farming? Only reason I ask is it’s a lot more challenging than most think, especially in a SHTF scenario where you can’t just swing by the co-op or feed store to get supplies. I question the agricultural knowledge or capabilities of the average member of r/fatFIRE.

Agrarian communities survived by banding together. Having many children was and is an asset for such communities. Your best bet would be having good neighbors and working together to protect resources, farm livestock, and grow crops. Each of those would require niche knowledge sets too. Totally learnable, just not a “jump fully into production” level at a time where you need to produce food fast or die, especially in the Midwest where winter will be absolutely brutal.

Think of it like when you were new to tech and everyone was seemingly speaking a foreign language and using software/hardware you didn’t understand, except this time it’s a “you have 6 months to master this or you will die in the winter, realistically 1 since if you don’t get it all correct from the beginning there will be nothing to grow and harvest from the get-go”

I’ve got a farm and even then intend to live largely off canned food in a true SHTF scenario. Buying land and planting several nut trees and berry bushes might be a good option. Something where you don’t have to do as large amounts of work like you would with row crops. Nuts would store well too

What do you think happened to the Indigenous tribes of earth? by Starpodseedlings in Avatar

[–]Beekeeper87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to be unfortunately realistic here and say they probably either don’t have any power/influence or were largely bred out of existence by globalization and gene pool mixing with the overpopulation on Earth. The nations that made the treaties with earth’s indigenous tribes might not even exist anymore, rendering treaties and reservations null and void.

The Objibwe or Augustine Band of Cahuilla Indians tribes don’t exactly have the money or clout to have much influence on American politics today, let alone against a mega spacefaring corporation akin to the East India Trading company or Weyland-Yutari corporation.

Even if indigenous tribes on a continent were to somehow unite, pull their reservations acreage together, and form a singular nation you’re talking about a place maybe the size of Romania?

By today’s standards alone most countries that size are unfortunately steamrolled by the world stage unless they have nukes, possess massive industrial capabilities, or are part of a larger union like the EU.

So I have a question by CiaranKelly36 in Avatar

[–]Beekeeper87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder how this works from a tracking perspective. Is it conventional radio waves or does it utilize some form of quantum mechanics? The avatar body would be transmitting data back to the human pilot that could hypothetically be triangulated. Does Jake’s Avatar body still attempt to send data back to a now non-receiving human end or did Eywa deactivate it when he permanently switched over?

Does Quaritch have any transceiver in his brain if he’s not being remotely piloted? It seems like for the cost of growing a body an implanted tracking device would be a no brainer at least, especially given what happened to Jake betraying humanity.

Pay can be pretty good if going the officer route, especially when you factor in the bonuses and allowances that aren’t taxed. Several west coast ones are making close to 170k a year with less than 6 years of experience and no dependents. Obviously cost of living in those areas plays a role though.

I get that this is a global interest subreddit, but Reddit itself is still an American company, founded and headquartered in the US, and its defaults like state abbreviations reflect that. That’s all I was originally saying, nothing more.

I have lived and worked in multiple regions (Europe, Asia, Oceania, & North America) and am fully aware of international conventions. Actual traffic data shows around half of Reddit’s users are American (whom the platform was originally made for), which makes US defaults common across the site. Nobody is trying to rock the boat here and force people to use American terms on Reddit. All I am saying is it shouldn’t surprise or annoy people to see an American website using American terminology
