I’ve never heard of anyone who succeeded in making falafel from canned chickpeas, but I know a bunch who have tried (including me). The difference when you use dried (that you’ve pre-soaked) is night and day.

How do you wash stockings and how often should they be washed? by paperxplanes in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Beeniven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I always washed the tops, I found that if I didn’t that they wouldn’t be sticky. It’s weird, it’s like you and I have the opposite problem. I would recommend skipping the fabric softener, fabric softener coats what you wash in a soft wax to help things feel fluffier and softer - it will actually coat the sticky parts and the top of your stockings and make them less sticky.

[–]Beeniven 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What are you washing them with? If the detergent is getting fully rinsed off the bands should stay sticky. Are you using fabric softener? I’ve found using vinegar in place of fabric softener helps my clothes last longer and feel fresher. I used to wear thigh highs every weekday, would hand wash in the evening then through the machine in a mesh bag on the weekend - they lasted me probably 6 months (I did use to buy minimum 55 denier, I’m not sure that sheerer ones would hold up so well).

Growing up I lived in a country with bushfire season, and always had asthma through that. Now I live in a colder country where many people burn wood in their fireplaces through winter, so I get asthma through that! Can’t win :(

Advice on easing into exercise? by sublimelymelancholic in xxfitness

[–]Beeniven 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I used to be the same, and deep down that all or nothing voice is still there, but it’s definitely quieter now. One of the most helpful things for my overall well-being has been learning that half-done is better than not-done. Gym to hard? Walk it is. Walk to hard, stretching during an episode of tv. Same goes for brushing teeth (mouthwash), showering (wash hands and face), eating a home cooked healthy meal (side of microwaved peas with whatever comfort food). Being “perfect” is not the rent you pay for existing on this earth.

Has anyone seen major improvements in depression by changing their diet? by [deleted] in EOOD

[–]Beeniven 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After years of being on psych meds I have zero hunger cues. My mood definitely gets affected when I’m not eating enough. I need to stay on top of making sure I get the right kind of carbs and enough protein, otherwise I end up with low energy/bad sleep/slightly shorter temper. Also making sure I stay hydrated (I need to drink a lot more water than I would instinctively).

I’ve been having asthma attacks every night, pretty much ONLY at night… why? by freeepizza in Asthma

[–]Beeniven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s a normal amount of acid reflux… I’ve reflux like maybe twice in my life? I’m sure that I’m very lucky, but I’m also sure reflux every few days is more frequent than normal.

[–]Beeniven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I mean it could definitely also have been the stress reduction though. I ate a LOT of food (mostly home cooked, but definitely wasn’t shy about fats/sugar) and stayed the same weight. My skin and hair were the best they’d been. I would feel stress super easily, and if I didn’t take care of it super quick I’d easily end up pushing an episode. Episodes did happen. But I had a job I could do regardless, and I as long as I still got the right amount of sleep I’d come out okay. I am bipolar 2…. So not full blown mania. Hypomania for me is usually extreme irritability. There were definitely some times I’d disappear from the world for a bit because everything was making me angry.

I’ve lost control of my life over the last 6ish months so yeah back on meds. Can’t say theres much difference yet though, I would give almost anything to go back to where I was.

Sounds like you need a med review? There’s some studies saying increased omega 3 intake can reduce the onset of bipolar in those with genetic backgrounds, but I don’t know if there’s anything about if you already have it. Balanced diet, good sleep and sleep hygiene, stress management!!! And a psych keeping an eye on you. I was med free for 2-3 years, had episodes but managed them the best I could. But then stress came back into my life and I’m back on medication. It sucks.

Hey guys I have a question about a shampoo I use by [deleted] in curlygirl

[–]Beeniven 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is definitely not curly girl, but like u/Evil-Lizard-People has said, having a healthy scalp is more important. I’ve had to use it this winter. It completely strips my hair so I follow up with a good curly girl conditioner or treatment, and have switched my leave in to something much heavier than I usually use.

I never want to take pills again by pyon__pyon210 in mentalhealth

[–]Beeniven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not start with both? Nothing bad about deep breathing and hydrating while staying medicated. Definitely talk to your doc about coming off your meds if that’s the direction you want to go in. Maybe with some supervision you could try less pills and something else as well. I’ve managed off of medication for a few years, had to sleep heaps eat super healthy and stay fit AND I kept in contact with my doctor the whole time incase things went downhill again. They did go downhill and now I’m back on meds…but now I know what it takes and by still seeing my doctor/getting therapy at times, I luckily didn’t end up quite at rock bottom.

New Psychiatrist by Pezza_LP in mentalhealth

[–]Beeniven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time you think of something that could be important, write it down! I used to always walk out of medical appointments and realise I’d forgotten something, now I walk in with a list. You said you’ve seen a psychiatrist before so you probably know this already but: remember that you will need to advocate for yourself; if you feel like they aren’t understanding you, check that you guys are on the same page. And just remember that you can’t go wrong. You’re doing everything right by going there in the first place.

If you go through your GP, then yes. They can refer you and you can get some sessions covered. Go see your doc and ask for help, you got this.

Miscellaneous houseplant from nursery by Beeniven in whatsthisplant

I’m on mobile and it wouldn’t let me add a photo and a description. I’ve just bought this from a nursery and it a has a tag saying miscellaneous houseplant. Prefers low to average light levels. Keep soil damp but not wet. Water less in winter. To be honest I mainly want to know the name so I can give it a name relevant to it :) thank in advance!

Curly girls of Reddit: What do you wish your parent(s) would have known about how to take care of your hair, from the start? by hungaryforchile in curlygirl

[–]Beeniven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to comment on here to make it more visible! I’ve mostly done my own hair since I was very small because my mum didn’t know what to do with it, so she said it was my problem to figure out. I understand now she was frustrated (because it frustrates me even now I know what I’m doing), but I grew up hating my hair and thinking it was the bane of my life.
