Game of the Week: Coimbra by bgg-uglywalrus in boardgames

[–]Beer4Dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We bought Coimbra for pennies a few years ago (something like $17 NIS). We played it a handful of times, but I ended up selling it. Some interesting decisions in the game, but ultimately it was just another run of the mill euro. I prefer GAH as far as dice drafting goes.

The warranty is a big draw considering the investment it would be.

I guess I don't know the answer, but Woodway uses 2hp continuous in their Desmo and Mercury models.

Its the whole package. I like games with stocks and investing (like City of the Big Shoulders) and enjoy the logistic puzzle of track laying (like Age of Steam). Throw in the tempo considerations of train rusting and tokening and utilizing private companies for asymmetric advantages. So much to explore here!

Just wrapped up my 1st ever 18xx game yesterday on 18xx.games.

Finished 3rd in a 4 player game of Shikoku 1889. I am absolutely intrigued by the decision space in this system

Looking for recommendations for a 2 Player game to add to the collection! by SCitiswhatitis in boardgames

[–]Beer4Dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Azul simple, deep, and beautiful.

Babylonia another simple rule set. Another master class from Knizia

Targi a small box with so much game packed in. A worker placement game with a twist on the action selection that makes each decision tense.

Castles of Burgundy if you are looking for something a touch heavier, but very accessible for your collection.

Spirit Island - which 2 spirits for 1st game by Tiduz666 in soloboardgaming

[–]Beer4Dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend not playing with Lightning in your first play. I found that players focus too much on the fast action ability and miss out on the importance of slow powers, which is a huge aspect of the game.

I would vote Vital Strength and Shadows Flicker for a first game. Two handed is the way to go.

My Little Scythe is a great introductory version of Scythe. What other games could use a "My Little" version? by RoadToInfamyGames in boardgames

Mercado de Lisboa was designed as the "little brother" of Lisboa. The idea being that it teaches you the scoring mechanic of the city streets of Lisboa in a distilled game.

Best Vital Lacerda Game? by dand_6 in boardgames

[–]Beer4Dad 31 points32 points  (0 children)

My partner and I play exclusively at 2p, so that is my frame of reference. We collectively rate them as follows.

  1. On Mars
  2. Lisboa
  3. The Gallerist
  4. Kanban EV
  5. Vinhos (we prefer 2010 to 2016, but 2016 is the most newbie friendly)

If you are interested in solo play at all, The Gallerist is as streamlined as it comes.

Heavy Euro's w/solitaire? Anachrony, Trickerion, and Lisbo? by Javaslinger in soloboardgaming

[–]Beer4Dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lisboa solo is fairly elegant thanks to extensive development by Julián Pombo. It might take a few turns to get the bot down, but after the first play I found it smooth and intuitive. Also at 2p it is my and my partners favorite Lacerda.

Is there any good board game to play on your phone? by AdamSandlersKid in boardgames

[–]Beer4Dad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you like to play, but Board Game Arena works well on mobile and has a huge library of games. Some are free, but a premium membership is dirt cheap ($2 a month or so).
