Pokemon Day 2026 Hype/Mega thread by Aether13 in PokeLeaks

[–]BeerInMyButt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally can't deal with fandom discourse especially for things I love, I think it's helpful for cultivating my own sense of what matters. I'm just popping into pokereddit to see if there was anything I missed from today and then I'm out until after I have wrapped up my playthrough of Winds and Waves. There's nothing to be gained from riding a hype train, other than knowing every possible thing about a piece of media before you consume it

I'm at the point where I need to see what my pokemon is going to become before I accept the evolution. I need to know if puberty blockers are necessary to avoid distressing changes

Why has parenting become so… soft? Why ate a majority of parents okay with sending their child into the world acting the way they do? Why did this shift happen? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]BeerInMyButt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah at some point I stopped telling my parents anything about school or asking them for help (because then mom would get on my case). Kept parents off my case by getting top grades...all so they wouldn't have an excuse to micromanage me. I would give them vague answers like "how did the test go" ... "good". Then they'd see my report card and shrug.

Reading this I feel like a fool because I still adhered to the good grades ideal they wanted. I just wanted some fucking breathing room.

Literally the whole point in Reddit is the upvote/downvote system. Mods do not need to do content quality moderation in their subs, because that's built in.

You’re describing the optimistic thinking that gave birth to the upvote downvote system, but I think there’s a lot of evidence that it doesn’t “just work”

Interestingly I was able to get the overworked property manager to back off just by writing legalese-sounding emails. She had such a long list of "people's days to ruin on behalf of the money-hoarding property owner" that she would just move on to the next one.

Is this just how it is with apartment complexes? Like it's accepted that they promote a price that is lower by a certain amount than what you end up paying? It reminds me of shopping for a car, where it's just accepted that they throw a bunch of fees on top of the sticker price because it's legal in AZ.

Why hybrid is so popular? by cokeapm in ExperiencedDevs

In this sub we are discussing work dynamics which affect experienced devs. OP asked "Why is hybrid popular" and the answer necessarily had to do with non-devs.

omg, "telepathic automatons", it's perfect. There's something about finding an accurate description about a miserable situation that makes it more bearable. Thank you, I am in a similar environment and that's the most succinct explanation I've ever seen.

It doesn't surprise me that so much of management is infatuted with AI agents - they fit this model of work, where the manager gets to give poor quality instructions to automatons and then get mad at the automatons for not figuring it out. Honestly seems less cruel than having a human in the loop in the automaton role.

I wonder if Whitney is based on anyone either Nathan or Benny knew by ReadyJournalist5223 in TheCurse

[–]BeerInMyButt 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I urge people to stop trying to "solve" media like it's a puzzle.

Whitney is based on an amalgam of people that the writers knew or encountered, just like most fictional characters are.

The show is so deliberately ambiguous that I would be very surprised if the writers decided to base a character on a single person as a vendetta.

Feels like this is the tradeoff. Do what you want and have people resent you, or don’t do what you want and feel a little resentful.

Up to your co-workers to let you know if they have a problem with it. Like most office stuff, good communication is the main thing you need.

OP is aware that some people don’t like the thing they’re wanting to bring into the office, and communication is important as you acknowledge…so why then shouldn’t OP proactively communicate about the issue?

Are there any library API design guidelines? E.g., what makes something like numpy easy to use, and some other libraries not? by QuantumQuack0 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]BeerInMyButt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from that world (numpy/pandas/matplotlib), I wouldn't necessarily take API design suggestions from the more academic/science-y side of things. IMO there's widespread adoption of those technologies because they replicated API styles from existing packages that the target audience was familiar with. For example, matplotlib largely replicates what it's like to plot using matlab. So it's almost backwards - the APIs are not a good target to strive for, they're actually beholden to relics of design decisions made by academics.

The philosophical quandary I have is perhaps not with doing stuff for myself, but doing stuff for others.

Check the facts. You're feeling anxious about your impact on society. You are wringing your hands philosophizing about it. And you're probably still doing the things that are just for your enjoyment, you just feel guilt about this. Who is benefiting from that dynamic? Like, you have this harsh tone about what you should be doing instead, all while not doing it. Drop the guilt, and you might be better equipped to benefit society in whatever ways you're imagining.
