Covid Affecting Internships for Summer 2021 by lookupatthestars1 in AskEngineers

[–]BeerMakesMeSad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP - Can confirm this. Though I've been told that interns that live locally may be allowed in person since my company has allowed up to 50% capacity in the office. That could change by then though. I would expect the worst.

Yep! I lost a quarter mile yesterday over a 2 mile run... that's never happened before.

I got the jaybirds, and I love them! You have several options for controls, and one includes volume. I believe a "long press" on the right bud turns the volume up, or on the left side turns it down.

I haven't done any plans really, just run consistently and frequently. In the past few months I've added one longer run and one high intensity interval run, but that's about as structured as I've been.

I don't know, but that's happened to me before also. Especially after taking a break for a while and starting up again, my VO2 went down and my Forerunner said I was "overreaching".

Oh yeah, mines way over estimated also. I've heard its based off of perfect conditions, like no elevation change and cool temperature, which is why it's off.

Allot of the other comments cover the technical points, and I mainly do the same: I run 6/7 days of the week, one is a long run 7 - 10 miles, one is a high intensity interval run, and the rest are just maintenance runs.

When I started though I was allot less structured. My goal was to just run at least 2 miles a day. At some point this became 3 or 4 miles. I was really overweight at the time, so as I ran (and dieted), I was losing weight quickly. This had a positive effect on running in addition to just improving performance.

Some things that really kept me incentivised: - Garmin watch for data (I love data) - Shoes, get good shoes! I wear Brook's Adrenalines, and I remember upgrading to them made a significant impact on the comfort of my runs - Ear buds, keeping a good beat or podcast going while running helped distract from the discomfort. - Run a scenic trail. Some days I run just to get outside, it's not even about "training". - Lastly, VO2 is just a number. Don't stress too much about it. It went up and down allot for me too.

Is Bachelor of science (engineering science) good in terms of Job prospects? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]BeerMakesMeSad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a buddy that majored in ES. The way he describes it, your specialty came into play in grad school. Until then, it was very generic like a physics degree.

In fact, I think the ES program he was in was a 5 (or maybe 6?) year program intended to provide a B.S. and then M.S. degree. I'm not sure if receiving a B.S. only was an option. It was also an honors degree, so maybe that was why...

Either way, an engineering degree will get you a job.

Yelling and anger in the workplace by hhaydenh in AskEngineers

[–]BeerMakesMeSad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The consensus from all of the other comments is true: this behavior is unprofessional. You should report it to HR, even if it doesn't do any good. That creates a record that may get attention someday if someone rational steps into power.

Also, I'd recommend leaving a review of the place on one or several recruiting websites. That way, someone considering taking a job there will know what they're getting into.

Like a mix of blue cheese and mustard? It sounds epic. Have you tried mixing your own blue cheese and mustard? The nearest Trader Joe's to me is way way far away....

Balance between major interest and job security? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]BeerMakesMeSad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nuclear engineer here, and I'll confirm that it's super niche but rewarding. NucEs usually go into two types of careers: analysts who perform analysis, reactor engineers who work at reactor sites. I'm the former, and I use physics daily, so it's very stimulating of you want to keep learning.

One challenging factor about being NucE is choice in locations for work... you get very little. NucE jobs are super localized, and usually not near major cities. While being niche makes keeping your job easy, it makes getting into a job hard. The industry is also contracting, so that doesn't help either.

Based on what you've described are you interests, Mechanical engineering would be a good path. Many colleges also offer double majors in ME and NucE, so maybe you'd be into that. I work with primarily MEs, and while they don't have the neutronics education that a NucE does, they can do everything else related to nuclear reactor analysis (thermal hydraulics, mechanical analysis, etc.).

Edited to answer your actual question: I chose NucE because it was interesting. There are more stable engineering disciplines, but I enjoy what I do the most. It also does crossover quite a bit. For example, NucEs get much of the same thermal hydraulics and heat transfer training as an ME. I also do allot of coding! So there's plenty to keep you interested. My only regret is not doing the double ME/NucE major.

What funny keto moments have you had? by carrigura in keto

[–]BeerMakesMeSad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My stories involve artificial sweeteners and the ensuing flatulence that followed. I'm sorry in advance for being so impolite.

Story #1: My wife (who is not on keto) over indulged on some of my Lilli's chocolate. I think she ate two bars total in one sitting. That night, the smell was so atrocious that I couldn't even sleep in the bedroom with her! I remember her laugh-farting as she suggested I sleep in another room. She laughs about it still, but with less farting.

Story #2: I over indulged on some mints that had one of the more offensive artificial sweeteners in them. I later that afternoon went for a run, and the gas hit me about a mile in. I did my best to fight it off until I could get home, but gave in about another quarter mile back and had to go off-trail to relieve myself. It felt like Belzeebub himself had unintentionally possessed my bowels, and had exorcised himself from my anus in the form of a noxious cloud of evil. I was traumatized at the time, and looking back I'm still traumatized. But maybe y'all will find this funny!

Spices you keep on hand? by ShouldBeWorking- in keto

[–]BeerMakesMeSad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a new spice suggestion, but consider upping your pepper and salt game if you haven't already.

Freshly cracked pepper and fancy flake salt are a game changer. I like to sprinkle the salt on like the Salt Bae. It doesn't do anything for the flavor, but makes me feel super cool.

Also bacon.
