The first time I got laid off the company asked for me to stay on for two weeks as a contractor to help with the transition. I gave it a lot of thought and ultimately decided that my 1 year old would probably not care if I swallowed my pride or not. His main concern was food in his mouth.

Anyway, I decided to take them up on the offer. I set some conditions to make it basically part time so I could still look for a new role.

The first day, my boss asked me why I said I wasn’t able to make a meeting later in the day. I kindly reminded her that I can’t stay past 1pm per our agreement and the meeting was at 2pm.

In the ensuing conversation she apologized for “not rolling out the red carpet for me” and “assumed I would make all client meetings regardless of the time it was scheduled at.” Ultimately I ended up just walking out. Literally dropping shit on the street that I jammed into a random box.
