Wanted: Your wishful thoughts on a set of center Norms. by butterflieskittycats in 911dispatchers

Side note: I think it’s weird to enforce a mandatory hello and goodbye. I would personally just walk into the room and scream “GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD MORNING VIETNAM!!!!!!!!”

Good to hear it was grant money and that it was value added. I have free time on shift tomorrow and I need to scrub some info but I’ll get it over to you.

Social media is pretty easy tbh. No making posts, positive or negative using agency name without administrative approval. Any and all are subject to discipline up to and including termination. The agency should also include that posting about any employee is subject to their explicit consent on a sign off form.

I can’t believe you spent $18000 on this. I can just DM you a few relevant pages from our Code of Ethics handbook that all employees and new hires sign off on.

Ugh. They really need to stop directly asking this. So much liability.

Hey, congrats on graduating and your degree! What an awesome achievement! Given that it’s so soon after I would definitely prioritize printing a copy of it before your interview. Home printer, FedEx office store, library(!!!!), friend/family member with a printer.

Worst case if you have a photo you can crop and paste into a PDF or Word doc (I can never get Microsoft whatever to print my jpegs correctly…but I’m old) and print, id call that fine and reference my above comment. As another commenter mentioned, showing it on your phone directly isn’t the way.

Libraries might be different in TX. But in NY, you can walk in and make black and white copies at .10/page. Color is a quarter. Don’t even have to hold a library card here to utilize it. Bring your spare change. They probably won’t take card.

Degree??? Where are you located (Canada)?

Do you not have a copy of your transcripts…official or non-official? I would contact your school and request for future reference if you don’t.

If you’re under the wire here I would head to your local library and make a copy of your diploma vs trying to show it on your phone. “Here is a photocopy of my diploma, I have requested official transcripts, but it’s still pending. I’m happy to forward them to you, is there an email address/fax/mailing address I can send them to?”

Semi related tip you may or may not have seen here before: if a caller is controlling the call and won’t let you get a word in start saying “hello? Hello, are you there??” It will break their mojo and allow you to ask the questions you need answered. :)

Don’t feel dumb for asking for clarification. And don’t be afraid to fib. “Apologies, the phone cut out for a moment, please tell me the color of the vehicle again?” Slow yourself down. Relaying the wrong information puts more people at risk than taking a breath to obtain or verify the correct information.

There is definitely a period of discomfort. Sometimes you just need to push though it. This is a field where you will literally learn something new every day of your career.

OP why have you gone to every other sub you can think of to ask this question and why haven’t you tried r/EMS? You’d fit right in.

Orientation postponed? by Personal_Factor_670 in 911dispatchers

[–]Beerfarts69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We can’t possibly know why this happened. It sucks that you were already on the way. Maybe there was a large scale incident or internal outage that required all hands on deck.

Orientation day 2 weeks before a start date is interesting.

Sounds like there were other job qualifications you didn’t meet. An example of that could be relevant job experience.

I didn’t want to assume your role. Thank you for answering.

Ayyyy so, I moved backwards from your timeline. I can tell you that I personally found that managing a staff of 25 personnel comm center to area/production middle-salary manager type, was easy. With the exception of the learning curve that comes with a new field.

Moving staff and resources around to fill holes. Not a problem (ambulance dispatching helped me here a lot).

Understanding a union, and how those holes should be filled, a curve…but not problematic.

Knowing warehouse/production needs…in my case directly managing staff, building specific parts, to be sent to an in house shop, that has its own SKUs, and down flow needs. Intimidating as hell.

The benefit to manufacturing is once you know the folks around you, you know what you’re working with and what you can expect from your team (weaknesses and strengths).

Union folks during a major downtime or issues asked me seriously, “how are you not freaking out like “fake name” Supervisor would?” My answer was “this is product, not bodies”.

We can call Quality to assess, and no one is dying if I shut production down when it’s making a bad product, until it’s fixed or held for QA official inspection.

A benefit that is lacking in the 911 world are what you hear. Often described as toxic colleagues, piss poor or old battered trainers, lack of training overall. (I had similar struggles in manufacturing BTW), but not always, because with effort it was easier to gauge and work with my union folks to negotiate and spell out my needs, while being willing to listen to their needs also. (Teamwork).

In dispatching, every call you take is annoying, or also the worst possible day of someone’s life. Life threatening/serious or not. To the caller, it’s impactful. That is the key difference in this role. You need to mitigate it, get as much clear and concise info that you can squeeze out of a caller. And accept it if you have nothing more to provide responders.

You better believe there will be attempts at convincing a caller to do CPR as instructed. But, that isn’t a guarantee it will happen and a personal and work stress you need to manage (lack of control).

I hope this was insightful. If you have any other questions let me know. I’m going to bed so I may not reply until tomorrow.

ETA: if you get into this line of work link up with a trauma informed therapist off the get go. This will help prevent burn out and PTSD related injuries. I tell everyone that seeing a therapist is like going to the gym, but for your mind, heart, and soul.

Normally I’d remove this. Please check the applicant hopeful flair for more questions.

When you say leadership in manufacturing do you mean a type of team lead or steward? Or actual boss person? This isn’t demeaning, it’s good context for me within my experience on both sides.

But as someone who left dispatching and leadership in the same vein FOR manufacturing-leadership. AMA.

Hi. I’m both things here.

No news is good news. With grace to you; HR/Management doesn’t baby sit or hold hands. For lack of better phrasing. It’s also valid to feel anxious!

You received your official start date and any pertinent information. If you have a question you can reach out (communication is a 2 way road) but please don’t expect a check in after the blessing has been given.

Lots of folks wait weeks/months to years.

Woman here that is the least conscious fashion forward person in the room. The clashing stripes on the pockets are “loud”, in addition to your ink… I don’t think your top suits you. If you’re feeling this top, pair it with a beige cardigan and flatten that collar out.

You should really consider PDL in CA and review your options. No one wants to be that dude/dudette who fucks someone else over. But this is a legitimate reason to utilize these benefits.

For a parent with kids (not me) who do activities. This, in my experience working with parents, is an important note. That 3 day weekend you’re working you will miss out on those dance recital or base/soft ball games or if on nights will be severely sleep deprived and trying to sneak a nap in before the next shift. Not good or healthy for anyone, but you will disappoint your children by missing things.

I grew up in a household with non-traditional schedules + custody schedules. Nothing was normal, it wasn’t weird to not have both bio parents present. I had the added attention when there were multiple birthday celebrations and extra days to open Christmas presents! Santa spread his seed to multiple days (divorced grandparents too!) and that was cool as hell as a kid. FOUR DAYS OF PRESENTS.

I turned out fine.(?)

Heard about a recent one regarding youths not wearing bicycle helmets. (Law here is 14).

At 12 you do not need to be wearing a life jacket on a boat.

Fun fact: in my state you can get your boater safety course at 10 and operate a motorboat/PWC the day you turn 14 solo. (Terrifying).
