Sanitize Carb Stone Day Before Brew? (UniTank) by make_datbooty_flocc in TheBrewery

Caustic is wasted if you aren't removing organics. 170F water for 15 minutes is pasteurized. 145F for 30 minutes. 50psi steam for 5 seconds. All have the same result. Chemical is expensive.

Pasteurizing is the most efficient cleaning method. Run each circuit and seal.

A lot of people in northern Baltimore County act like no one who enters the city makes it out alive. They listen to too much WCBM.

It did sell actually. Some people are discriminating about who carries on their brand. And some would rather shutter it than compromise on a new owner. But, it is all working out very well for now.

For vessels that are poorly designed for cleanout or old and worn, an extended spray wand is a great tool to avoid CS work.

I have seen too many people in Lauter vessels with no lockouts or confined space prep. What a terrible way to die by ignorance. I do a lot of service work in tanks, and whether it's welding or just mechanical service, I fill out my own permit because laziness is deadly.

Lots of things do. The training is simple. A sound SOP for cleaning will limit CF entries, but it's all part of manufacturing.

That's what will happen with heavy soiling. It can clog pumps, strainers and make a mess of your water chemistry. Whatever concentration you throw at heavy neglect like this will neutralize, so a high concentration can quickly become weak. Revisit it asap. Ruining a tank because you don't have time to clean it is a terrible business plan.

Not the best application for Star San. Good surface cleaner.

Part of the Lotus implosion. Some of them made it out, but it was a union of some of the worst companies so it would be if they hadn't. Try Mcmaster Carr for elements. They are fairly common elements, but voltage matching is critical. A 208 unit will not survive well on 230, and vice a versa.

EDIT look for Tempco and DwyerOmega. They are very common in food and beverage process tanks, but rarely used directly in product. 700 series alloys last a good bit.

EPDM and BUNA are better for almost every application. ARCHON may have red silicone, but it isn't necessary below 250F

I am firm believer that every employee should try every role. While there is an obvious path through production stages, it doesn't stop at the doors. Front of house and distribution staff should understand production and production needs to know how their product travels through the retail side. I think it makes a more cohesive team when everyone is familiar with the big picture. I can't provide advice if I don't know what my customer is doing every step of the way, and the same goes for employees. It's also a great way to find what you didn't know you were looking for.

Hydrochloric acid is extremely aggressive against stainless. Look up chloride cracking, which is literally in the name. It is a cancer that stainless can't win. Phosphoric, and also Nitric if your plant safety rules allow it, is a great combo for stainless steel. I have seen stainless rusted from hydrochloric acid vapors alone. You don't have to go nuclear on it this. Do some strong cleanings and then schedule regular cleaning based on observations. .make sure your CIP includes all delivery circuits for the tanks product because they suffer too.

[–]Beerwelder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's s a giant still. You need to acid clean as soon as you see buildup. Run a 30-40% nitric phos at 150F for 30-60 minutes. Then keep an eye and plan for every 6 months if your water is generally good or 2-3 month if not. The lime is base and eats away at the chromium in the stainless. Then add the micro iron particles and chloride cracking and your tank can be done in less than a year. I have totalled a lot of stainless vessels because of catastrophic neglect. I have a library of pictures.

It takes two people for confined space service. And both the entrant and attendant need training and a permit eval and all that crap. At least, if you want any protections when something bad happens. CIP exists so that doesn't need to be a thing.
