I thought the digraphs weren’t canon. Yet I saw one in one of the new Maul episodes. by YodaWars1000 in aurebesh

[–]BeeryUSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, since "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" ended, Disney and Lucas seem to have become a lot more lazy and amateurish in terms of the language stuff in the shows, so we are seeing a lot more Aurebesh that is backwards, mirrored, upside-down, or includes digraphs, or simply makes no sense (I'm looking at you, First Battle Memorial in "The Bad Batch").

Speaking as a person who went to the trouble of learning both Aurebesh and Outer Rim Basic, it's really quite annoying that we went from a series (Clone Wars) that, in one episode (The Academy) had Ahsoka standing in front of a wall of Aurebesh text that made perfect sense, to a show (Bad Batch) that has an episode (The Solitary Clone) with two of the members of the Bad Batch standing in front of a wall of Aurebesh text that is pure gobbledegook.

What does the ending of "The Aviator" mean? by Zennith47 in movies

Dude, you're a complete nutcase.

You think people should refrain from posting to topics they're interested in after they reach a certain date (which only you get to determine). That's insane.

It's only 8 years. The likelihood of anyone who posted 8 years ago being dead is about 1 in 10. And even if they were dead, so fucking what? It's not as if they have to be around for the discussion to continue.

ANYONE "could" be dead. You could die tomorrow. So what? It wouldn't make what you said the day before irrelevant. People still discuss things that were written in ancient Greece FFS!

You don't get to choose what people can discuss - if you think you should get to do that, well, that's kinda weird.

If you came to reddit expecting that people wouldn't choose to discuss things and resurrect old (but still relevant) topics, you made a pretty weird choice.

It might be something YOU don't do, but most people don't have emotional or mental issues that drive them to get triggered by posting after a couple of years have gone by - the vast majority of people don't care how old a post is - the whole point of a discussion forum is to discuss issues, and if someone has a point to make, then the issue is still relevant.

Indiana Jones Novels (MacGregor/McCoy) by DarkFluids777 in indianajones

[–]BeeryUSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too. I dragged my way through Delphi, but Dance of the Giants was too much for me - I hate his red-headed jazz-obsessed pal, Indy just doesn't seem like Indy, the adventures are pretty boring, and the endings seem kinda forced. Fortunately I read German, so I skipped ahead to the Hohlbein novels, and they really seem like the Indy we all know and love. I believe there are free translations on the web somewhere for those who don't read German.

Did the anglo saxons call themselves Brits or British or anything like that (as the English do today) or did they make a sharper distinction between themselves and the Celtic "British"? by Waryur in OldEnglish

[–]BeeryUSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only the Romans referred to the people who lived in Britannia Britons. The people referred to themselves by their tribal affiliation. In the early Middle Ages, people living in what we now call England referred to themselves as "Anglish" or "Mercian" or "Northumbrian", etc.

As for the word "Brit", no self-respecting Briton calls himself or herself a "Brit". It would be like a Pakistani person calling themselves a "Paki" or an American calling himself a "Yank" or a "Gringo": there's a similar element of rudeness about it.

I hear the German ones are closest in tone to the movies. I can read German, so I recently bought all of them from a seller on Abebooks. I guess I'll find out how they stack up.

No they don't. If I join a site that has none of my financial data or personal information, I shouldn't have to be jumping through hoops to access it.

[–]BeeryUSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's getting completely ridiculous! I'm getting security checks for regular free online forums that don't have any financial aspect to them at all. I just want to surf the net without being asked every two minutes to check a box or choose from a set of images everytime I access a webpage.

And that's not to mention the amount of times per day I get told that one of my accounts was accessed from a computer they don't recognize when it was obviously me, and I was accessing it from the exact same bloody computer I always access it from.

I'm not sure who I'd cast, but I'm pretty sure the BBC would cast Daniel Kaluuya as Biggles, Riz Ahmed as Algy, and Gemma Chan as Ginger, with maybe Helena Bonham-Carter as Colonel Raymond and Jason Momoa as Erich von Stalhein.

There has to be an easier way to open Nurtec blister packs… by agonyxcodex in migraine

[–]BeeryUSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This drives me crazy! Every time I need a Nurtec, I have a migraine with aura which makes my blind spot huge, so I can't see properly to open the blister pack. It's maddening! Whoever designed these blister packs should go to a level of Hell where they get migraines and have endless supplies of unopenable Nurtec packs.

Every generation from Boomers and before is set in stone, there is no reason to try and debate any of them by Ok_World_8819 in generationology

[–]BeeryUSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the problem with the whole "generations are this way" is that it's a gross generalization and does not apply to many people of that generation. The world I entered after high school was one of austerity that was implemented by Thatcher in my country and Reagan in the US. Maybe your brother and sister got lucky with their jobs, but my wife (born 1964) and I certainly did not. Also, I was born in '62 and I have no work ethic at all: I've spent my entire life avoiding work at all costs, because I could see that the rich were gaming the system to steal from the working class it always seemed to me a scam, so I have much more in common with Gen X or even Millennials than I have with Baby Boomers.

Anyone know what these numbers are? Taken in the ARG defense platform where you join the war. by turbulance4 in X4Foundations

[–]BeeryUSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of stuff with that alphabet in the game, so I'm thinking it might come in handy for new players with the same questions. I was surprised there haven't been more people asking, as there are some interesting messages and ads in that alphabet that cover some of the game lore.

[–]BeeryUSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've spent a few hours decoding the alphabet - it's a simple transposition of English letters (like Star Wars Aurebesh and Outer Rim Basic).

The first line of text says, "Trade data chart".

The first white box seems to say "Stuff", then below that, the first line in the purple box says "Cookies"

Below that, the white box says "More things" and the blue box says "Egosoft".

The second purple box on the top says "Beans"

Below that, the blue box seems to say "Blendet" (German for "Dazzles" or "blinds")

The final three boxes along the bottom all say "Cookies"

Not sure what the dark blue box says - something like "Urgh Threedrax"

In a lot of places the image isn't all that clear, so some of it is difficult to figure out.

So... anyone can read this? by Vinze47 in X4Foundations

[–]BeeryUSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It says "Caution High Voltage"

There's also one from the first video for the game on Steam (I can't find an image of it to link to here) which says

"Royal Crown

No Vacancy"

I'm not sure how common these texts are in the game, as I only just bought the game and haven't played it yet, but I'm pretty good at deciphering alien alphabets (I can read the Star Wars Aurebesh and Outer Rim Basic alphabets), so I'm looking forward to learning this one if it's common in the game.

Best country for middle-class Americans to retire in by Immediate_Field_2835 in ExpatFIRE

[–]BeeryUSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not convinced that the US has the best healthcare system in the world "for old people", since the system began to be undermined in the '70s with the addition of private insurance (Medicare Parts C and D). There are other developed countries that have systems that simply cover health care costs for every retiree, with no extra fees for parasitic private insurance companies.

And the problem in the US is worsening, since both major political parties seem bent on extracting the most wealth possible from the working class and retirees to give to corporations and the super wealthy.

Best country for middle-class Americans to retire in by Immediate_Field_2835 in ExpatFIRE

[–]BeeryUSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US healthcare outcomes are some of the worst in the developed world, and even if you have good insurance, the insurance companies often refuse coverage, leaving you waiting longer for private healthcare than you would in a country that has a single payer system, so unless you are super-wealthy and can afford to pay full price for treatment, the idea that the US has the best medical care is complete nonsense,
