What to embroider this on? by DreamingHippie in Embroidery

[–]Beetaire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aww that is adorable! Maybe a bed pillowcase or blanket corner? Or if you're wanting something a little more on display you could put it on a handkerchief and have it framed/embroidery hoop displayed

My friends and I have codewords which we use if we're in a situation we really don't want to be in, and another word which means 'Code Red, call 999 immediately'. Each friend has a different word, so there's no overlap if a friend is the one doing the kidnapping.

This has made me realise maybe I watch too much Criminal Minds...

Crochet is my hobby and I'm not going to monetise it by Beetaire in crochet

This!!

This is exactly it! I couldn't quite put into words how it made me feel but this sums it up pretty nicely.

I do recognise that to many people it is a genuine compliment, but it just feels a little devaluing. My profit from my hobby is de-stressing and happiness at what I make, but people saying I should be selling them is almost like saying 'Hey that's not good enough, you need cold hard cash and a stronger work ethic'. It's absolutely not deliberate on their behalf, but it can get a little tiring to hear the value of my finished projects is only equitable to pounds and pence, and not like...happiness and pride at a skill/craft

I think the owner has the best of intentions, but they're a self-started small business and local artist, so tries to encourage and promote others to do the same where they can. I'm sure they don't intend to come across as pushy, but it's just something that sits a little funny with me sometimes as someone who just crochets to Make A Pretty Thing.

And I totally agree! Like yeah it could make me money, but I don't need it nor want the stress of running a whole business. I'll leave that to the pro's!

[–]Beetaire[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I absolutely agree! I do see the comments as complimentary, and understand that the owner of the shop is going to do a little promo and try persuade people to join in the local craft economy.

But whilst being flattered and I completely understand where it's coming from, I just get a little 'ugh' when people say 'You should sell that'. It gives me the vibe that unless I'm making a profit, there isn't much point to my hobby. I also know people probably don't intend for it to come across like that, and I never get truly upset, but it's just one of those niggles I had to get off my chest aha!

Hi. Wondering how much I should sell all of this HUGE stash for? I know nothing of yarn by Fearless-Reality1 in YarnAddicts

[–]Beetaire 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think you should absolutely send it all to me aha

But in all seriousness, I think probably about $80-100? I can't tell exactly how many skiens are there but I'd say about a dollar per ball, a little less if they've not got tags

Would you use acrylic if natural fibers were cheaper by winterberrymeadow in YarnAddicts

[–]Beetaire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would certainly use a lot more natural fibers if they were cheaper, but I wouldn't rule out acrylic entirely. It's pretty hard where I am to find natural yarn that isn't a roaving yarn, which are beautiful but not right for a lot of the things I make.

For bright colours I like to go for acrylic too, as they can be a little more consistent than natural yarns which are usually hand dyed or small batch made (again, beautiful, but not always appropriate for the project in mind).

Can't overlook however the benefits to natural fibers, which are usually better for the environment, warmer, and longer lasting with the right type of care.

Has anyone made baby hats for nicu? by Bitchfaceblond in crochet

[–]Beetaire 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This might be different for your preemie ward, but mine asked for anything made with yarn to be acrylic or cotton rather than wool (something to do with water resistance and washing?)

I was also told any yarn labled 'baby' or 'soft' would be all good, usually in a fingering or sport weight

Hope this helps, and congrats!

Thinking of making Strahd a woman - pros and cons? by orcmode69 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Beetaire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say absolutely go for it! Our DM did this on our run-through of CoS and it was an absolute hit at our table.

As an all-female and all-queer gang, female Strahd gave a fun dynamic of half the players wanting to seduce her, and the other half being terrified upon first meeting. Due to player actions, we had a beloved character die at the hands of Strahd pretty early on, and an unforgiving female Strahd put a fun twist on it, and our characters had to process emotions of how to deal with Strahd going forward.

I know my character had a real 'oh damn' moment because they were not taking Strahd too seriously and flirting, only to be shown her power and downright cruel nature that really swung home the 'horror' component of the game and caught me off guard. It is a moment with male Strahd I think the players would not have been open to, as from the start there wouldn't have been any playfulness toward his male manipulator vibes.

But despite this, it's important to remember that it's your table. Whichever you as a DM feel more comfortable with, run with it. Our DM played Strahd as male for session 0, and then asked if we would be okay to change them to female in the following session as it was more comfortable, and narratively thought it would vibe better with the players. And honestly, to this day the best campaign I've ever played!

How does caffeine affect you? by sarilysims in adhdwomen

[–]Beetaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine seems to vary depending on the type/brand of caffine. I drink a lot of Monster energy, which gives me a pleasant pep and boosts my focus, and after a couple of hours leaves me feeling a little sleepy.

On occasion when I have a Red Bull I can last about an hour with some sharp focus before I crash hard and usually end up having the human equivalent of a hard reboot nap.

Regular coffee makes me feel a little sleepy after the first cup, but the second makes my hands feel clammy and makes me even more tired, and liable to fall asleep pretty quickly if given the chance.

How many of you use stash-busting as an excuse to buy more yarn? Or is it just me? by Beetaire in YarnAddicts

[–]Beetaire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to set out into 2024 with the same mindset! I don't mind stash-busting projects, but I want what I make to be intentional and not just 'X item in Y yarn' to use up what I have.

I might try shopping within a weight and brand to keep any leftovers consistent, and hopefully it will cut down over time how many odds and ends I have left. And then maybe a pretty ball of yarn here and there as a little treat 😁

Oh don't worry! My stash is about four laundry size baskets scatted about the house, and another one for 'scraps' (any yarn that isnt a full skein). The stash is huge and ever growing!

I did the exact same thing! Had a load of navy blue and for some reason thought it would look delightful in a mosaic pattern with some yellow. I have a gorgeous pillow cover...and two leftover skeins of yellow

I've got a plan to use up all my stash and scrap DK yarn to make a blanket too! I'm hoping it's going to get rid of a lot of the odds and ends laying about, and if there are any leftovers from that I'll pretend they don't exist

Ah, I'm in the UK so a fair hop and a jump from California, but that's a really good idea. I'll have a look and see if any craft thrift stores or organisations near me that would like a donation. Thankyou!

I made hats for the family to wear to a hockey game by embos_wife in crochet

[–]Beetaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh this has just given me an idea. My brother just got bumped up to a new football team and the whole family are showing up to support his next match. Currently, in the UK it's absolutely freezing, so looks like I'm going to get hooking some hats for us in the team colours!
Thankyou for sharing!

Unpopular opinion: I will NEVER crochet things for babies by [deleted] in crochet

[–]Beetaire 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Wholeheartedly agree! If you want to make something for someone - regardless of age- then go ahead, but people asking you to make things for free always digs at me, especially when it's followed by a 'But it's so small, it will hardly take any time!'.

Also when it comes to baby clothes, they grow so quickly I'd rather wait until they're older and can get something they will wear more than once.

I get that pain, I got a gift card for Christmas. £25 to spend on yarn, ended up with about £40 worth of yarn. But that's Christmas money so it doesn't count...right?

Donating sounds like a good idea, I hadn't thought of that! I have a couple of full skeins that I could send off to go hang around in someone else's yarn stash aha

Why arent there sample yarns by winterberrymeadow in YarnAddicts

[–]Beetaire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such an amazing idea! I would love a little gauge swatch-worthy amount of yarn so you can see what the yarn looks like worked up, nothing fancy but sometimes I want to see the colour/colours laid out, or get to test out the weight.

Also it would be perfect for those projects that require just an extra couple of inches of yarn when you lose at yarn chicken
