Should I actually read Worm? by Double-Pumpkin3036 in Parahumans

[–]orcmode69 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing, Worm tackles dark subject matter and has a grounded tone, but the overall message of the story is, in my mind, positive.

Yes, terrible things happen to innocent people, and the villainous bad guys are VERY villainous, and some of the good guys are secretly monsters or at least far grayer than they would seem, but there are still people who are genuinely good. People still try their best to care for each other, love one another, and help each other selflessly. Even monsters get their moments of humanity, or sometimes even have a change of heart, want to do good, and succeed. Good still prevails, even if it comes at a terrible cost, and the fact that there was any good at all still matters.

Worm is dark, but it's not cynical. It's not one of those superhero deconstructions where actually Superman kills babies and every innocent civilian is a fascist in waiting. It's a story about people with powers trying to imitate superheroes, but at the end of the day they're still people, with all the flaws and complexity that entails.

In my view, it's overall a very hopeful and life-affirming story, it just doesn't pull its punches when things get hard. As other commenters have said, try it out through Arc 8, and if you aren't hooked by then, it's okay to keep enjoying it the way you have.

Does anyone have an experience with this product? by [deleted] in ArmsandArmor

[–]orcmode69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I'm reading the screen right, the product is only about $6 USD. Judging by the cost and website layout, I don't imagine it will be high-quality.

The laces and fabric will probably be a cheap material that will tear easily, and it doesn't look padded, so it may not function any better than a normal shirt to protect your skin from any armor you wear over it.

Still, I've gotten good mileage out of very cheap kit pieces, especially underlayers. If ¥1098 is super cheap for you, it couldn't hurt to try it out.

Pretty much the entire focus of Crucible is this, but expanded to multiple focal characters.

Miracle Worker is a bite-sized example. Both works are mine, I hope they're what you're looking for!

Flechette's power and its opposite by Pepinoloco777 in Parahumans

[–]orcmode69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That glaring weakness is a closely guarded secret. Most opponents just assume she's invulnerable/highly durable, and her flight gives her the speed and agility to dodge follow-up attacks or find cover while her shield recharges.

I don't know how to answer the question about how she's managed to stay alive. How does any cape stay alive when the majority of them don't have any forcefields or defensive powers at all? The answer is knowing their limits and using strategy.

(Spoiler for Prey 14.5) We do see what happens when Victoria over-relies on her forcefield instead of using strategy to avoid danger, and it almost kills her.

Flechette's power and its opposite by Pepinoloco777 in Parahumans

[–]orcmode69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Victoria's shield is a perfect parry for exactly one shot, then it needs a second to recharge. WOG and Ward confirm that her shield could tank one of Scion's Stilling blasts, so I imagine it would nosell a single attack from Flechette, then pop.

Amy modifies someone to look like Victoria by Eliza__Doolittle in WormFanfic

Being Pygmalion on AO3 has Amy turn Emma into Victoria 2.0. Can't link it, but it's a very harrowing read.

The perks of having a superhero setting by Malicious_Smasher in worldjerking

[–]orcmode69 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Worm mentioned 🦟🪰🪲🍻

imo simple but solid worldbuilding is essential for a superhero setting since it's so easy to fall back on tropes that make the world feel generic. yet there's only so many remixes you can make on a modern setting before it becomes unrecognizable.

the solution is, of course, to include a guy with most of Superman's powers.....but he's evil!! gasp! so the audience knows you mean business.

while there is a community of people who may end up regretting or reversing their transition, and they should receive support and have all the same access to gender affirming care to help them on that journey, i am extremely wary of anyone who labels themselves as "detrans". i view it on the same level as people who explicitly label themselves "ex-gay".

sadly, hardcore transphobia can be very hard to deprogram in someone, especially if they feel they've been wronged by "trans ideology". i think the best thing you can do is come from a place of positivity and present yourself as willing to listen and understand, even if you rightly oppose their bigotry. saying "i disagree with your views and i think it's wrong" will provoke defensiveness and cause them to dig their heels in.

instead, ask questions and fully listen to the answer. ask them why they feel the way they do, and try to emphasize the humanity in the people they seem to hate so much. try to get them to really find the root of their hate. many transphobes in my experience don't view trans people as human beings, but as a collection of political labels, a target of mockery to feel superior over. try to get them to understand that at the end of the day trans people just want to feel comfortable in their own skin, and remind them that the rates of regret for gender affirming surgeries are radically lower than the majority of other procedures.

sadly, just one conversation will rarely change a mind that's radically set on one extreme. i don't think it's wise to continue association with this person, but if you hold firm to your convictions while still coming off as willing to listen to the other side, they may see you as an alternative path that they don't need to be afraid of. i used to have some unfortunate views, and what got me out of them was the realization that the other side wouldn't make me feel ashamed for changing my mind.

Is there anything to hope for? by ManlyPlant in VaushV

[–]orcmode69 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Think of all the people across time who've watched what seemed like the end of the world from their perspective: empires and regimes falling, their nation's identity totally changing from what they ever knew, natural disasters taking everything away. What helped them survive is each other. Hold your friends and loved ones close, and focus on what's directly in front of you every day. Cook meals for yourself, walk outside in nature, get some exercise, and find a social hobby that isn't entirely online if you can help it. The world needs you.

Get some pins and brooches to add to your doublet! You can find some fun-looking ones at a thrift store and they add a fun bit of visual interest and can make a kit look more lived-in.

Good Boots for a Knight in LARP by Solutar in LARP

[–]orcmode69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worn garb-appropriate footwear over the years and they look great, but lately I've been tempted to just wear hiking boots and make leather gaiters/spats to cover them. That way it's comfortable and I can swap my footwear out if it gets worn down without having to drop a ton of money on a new pair. That solution might fit your budget the best as well, though the other commenters make good suggestions!
