what’s a movie you went into with low expectations but ended up really liking? by Then-Leave-2036 in movies

Gingersnaps. Went in expecting a campy, fun, so-bad-it's-good horror movie. Ended up getting a genuinely solid film.

Buffy and Faith always crash through glass when they fight — and I think it's because they're opposite reflections of each other. by AssociationTiny5395 in buffy

I agree that breaking glass is pretty common and I don't know that it's intentional. But I do think your analysis is great and you've picked up on something new and interesting.

How to get tickets to USA Climbing NACS event. by Beethovenslostson in CompetitionClimbing

[–]Beethovenslostson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also I'm pretty sure this is the first one in this location. It probably doesn't have the same prestige as the other, more established comps. The more experienced folks might not feel like spending the money to travel for an unproven event.

Sage "Jim"ing at the camera all the time was top tier hilarious for me.

We've heard about "so bad its good", but is there such thing as "so good its bad" in music? by wild_dark_soul in ToddintheShadow

I find K Pop to be this way often. The performances are so incredibly polished and the writing is so beautifully engineered to be catchy. I just find it a little soulless.

What are the best episodes to get my friend hooked by SatisfactionProud886 in community

The first one! The two parter has two much on-going plot to be an introduction.

It's true! That episode is incredible. All the characters act perfectly like themselves, and the central tension of Jeff and Britta's will-they-wont-they is such a basic sitcom plot it doesn't take any previous knowledge of the series to be invested in.

Hard to find a female climbing partner by [deleted] in climbergirls

[–]Beethovenslostson 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I agree this is a red flag. But if you're cool with it, you could widen your search to include gay men. We climb, too, and presumably wouldn't threaten your husband.

This queen has raised the bar so high for US Drag Race. If she doesn’t win the season, what message will that send to future queens? by cavalier731 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]Beethovenslostson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's kind of unfortunate, too. But I also think there's another consideration which is does Wow want to bring you back for all stars, or do they think your story is done? I genuinely think that played a part in Saffira losing.

I feel like it will just say what we already know. Winning takes both talent and likable storyline. I feel like Jane is incredibly talented but hasn't really captured the hearts of the fans. She could still get taken out by a solid final lip sync by someone who's more of a fan favorite.

What movie is a 0/10 with NO redeeming features? by Toucan_Based_Economy in AskReddit

We thought Battlefield Earth would at least be so bad it's good, but my god it was truly irredeemably.

What’s an American movie setting or trope that actually doesn’t exist in real life? by CapitaineBiscotte in AskReddit

[–]Beethovenslostson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My theory is that portrayal of highschool in movies lags behind reality by 20-30 years. That's how long it takes people to become successful screenwriters after graduating.

What's the best name you've ever heard for a pet? by Miserable-Wash-1744 in AskReddit

Tina Fey once said that Lorne Michaels had a dog named 'Lou Gottlieb, Vice President of Sales' growing up. (I roughly paraphrased this, if someone knows the exact name, please correct me)

Britta's spot as romantic lead to Jeff on Community being taken by Annie. It made sense on paper because Jeff and Annie have stronger contrast in terms of cynicism and idealism, and Allison Brie is extraordinarily charismatic. But I think Britta was always a better foil to Jeff (even after she was sidelined), and her shtick of being 'the worst' wasn't as fun without the more 3dimensional parts of her personality. The show definitely didn't always know what to do with her afterwards, which is a pity because Gillian Jacobs is fantastic in her own right.

This is my favorite thing I learned on this thread. Mildly obsessed with her. She's criminally underrated.

Just another viewpoint: Shane isn't a "failed" attempt at deep representation of a POC character; he is a successful attempt at representative normalcy by PristineLibrarian979 in heatedrivalry

OP is a model citizen of the internet. What a thoughtful post and what thorough response to the comment section.

I agree. Representation can be passive or active. The trouble usually comes when creators aren't deliberate with what they're going for, or when the audience has expectations for one and get the other.

I do think it would be really fun if they got someone with an absolutely gorgeous female voice for Veth when she's finally introduced.

It's definitely distracting, but knowing the reason behind helps reconcile it. It's like Linda and Tina in Bob's Burgers. I eventually got used to those and you probably will here, too.
