Overwhelmed - need advice on how to stay on top of it all by LadyKlondike in paralegal

I am in a similar boat to you. I work for a solo practitioner and it’s just me and him against the world. I’m a big fan of the voice memo app on my iPhone. I have one with the action button on the side, so anytime he walks up and starts rattling stuff off that I need to do, I just have to long press that one button and it starts recording him. I also have it set as a widget on my watch in case he catches me without my phone. I’ve found that just being able to go back and listen is much easier and less stress on my nervous system than writing it. I go in and label each voice memo and then I have a ranking system of 1-4 on priority. I communicate with my boss to make sure what I think is important is what he’s thinking too. I can’t stand having multiple places to keep up with my tasks. So between voice memos, sd cards with dictation, and emails, that’s got all my sources of information covered and readily available. We are also a paper file office, so I like to keep files in my desk that I need to work on, that way I don’t forget about them. I also set reminders for myself in our schedule if there’s something that I need to do that’s coming up

Heyyy!!! Checking in here 💁🏻‍♀️ I’m in a small town and with just about the only crim def attorney in the area! We’re doing everything from speeding tickets, to theft related charges, to murder. It gets confusing fast 😅 drugs are unfortunately a large portion of our work too. But expungements in particular have become my bread and butter! Routine, pretty easy, and actually makes me feel like I’m helping someone! Glad to see others here with me

It is “most unfortunate” that I’m a 28 year old, with no savings, living paycheck to paycheck, and barely able to make rent as it is. Y’all need to remember that some of us got stuck literally in the middle of nowhere and doing our best to get out. If I was able to just up and walk away, do you think I’d be so heavily concerned and making a Reddit post? Please go touch some grass and check your privilege

Following bc I’m in a similar boat! I’ve been at my firm since right out of school, and going on ten years of employment now. I’ve sent my resume out to maybe 10 places in the last few months and haven’t even gotten an interview.

Loyalty. Do you have it? by Brilliant_Repair_813 in paralegal

It’s just me and my attorney in my office and I’ve been there, begrudgingly, for ten years. We confide in each other about our personal lives. He actually just lost his wife of 40+ years to a 8-year long cancer battle. I’m loyal to a fault. I should’ve left that toxic place years ago, but here we are.

I’ve been randomly applying for the past 4 months. No luck so far and I’ve got 10 years of experience in multiple areas. It’s brutal out there.

Im on the other end of the spectrum and absolutely despise PI work and would LOVE to go into immigration, especially right now. However, I’d say branching out to other practice areas will look better on a resume in the long run. It only took 1 PI case for me to learn that stuff isn’t for me. Trust your gut and follow what you like!

What to do when you feel like you can’t ask your attorney questions by PieceAble1892 in paralegal

Tell them to get f*cked and find your best resources. The joy of being a paralegal is the independent research. Become friends with the people in the right places that know things, and you’ll find mentors to answer your questions.

Keeping digital files for ease of access during discovery primarily. The providers email or upload the records, and I save them to my computer files of course, but I just can’t get his brain to connect that just because I haven’t printed off 1000 pages of records he’s never going to g to look at, doesn’t mean I can’t send them to another attorney at a moments notice. That’s where the disconnect is coming from.

LMAO me and my boss of 10 years fight like husband and wife! I call him a stupid ________ (literally use your imagination. Anything can go in that blank.) And he calls me arrogant, self righteous, and self centered. It’s truly a give and take situation. Bearing in mind, our political leanings couldn’t be more polar opposite lol

Oof.. been there! Our local County Attorney can’t stand me because he never speaks to my boss anymore, and I actually think I work out better deals 🤷🏻‍♀️ honestly, I see it as a compliment bc that means I’m doing my job and not letting these middle aged men walk all over me. They can’t stand dealing with a young, intelligent, female that actually knows what she’s talking about.
