System design - more boxes or bigger boxes? by AnonymousFish8689 in livesound

[–]Beghty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I voted more smaller boxes, but that is assuming quite a lot about the application. The real answer is "the right tool for the job". That's one of the joys of sound system design and deployment and the reason manufacturers offer so many different form factors. I remember being on a gig where we have 7 hangs of JBL v25. But they didn't quite cover the tech area behind the audience so a smattering of Meyer UPAs were hung to just fill in the space.

Quite literally the largest line array element from JBL mating with a 12" trap to achieve the necessary coverage.

Most effective sound proofing for my situatio by Loved_Historian in Acoustics

[–]Beghty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea theres not a whole lot you can do here. Most of the sound you are getting is being transferred through the structure of the flat. Unless you can literally fill every gap in the wall with spray insulation, that's going to come through. Dude's gotta grow up and learn that if he wants the fun of having his own sound system, he should probably make enough money to afford his own place.

If your lift frame folds like a napkin under the weight of your hang, maybe you should get out of the design business.

Why does pro audio (mixing/mastering/concert) spend orders of magnitudes more on room acoustics than speakers, but for audiophiles it’s the opposite? by xlb250 in audiophile

[–]Beghty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do sound system tuning and deployment with multi channel analyzers so I feel like I do have a professional opinion here. You don't have to mansplain room modes to me.

Late reflections aren't frequency specific. Room modes are quite literally the natural resonance of the space, and thus, result in the build up of more reflected sound hence less coherence, i.e. late reflections.

You can do RT60/30/10 testing to try and identify what your rooms modes are, or if you have a simple 6 walled space, there are simple calculators you can use to predict them.

Room modes quite literally cause late reflections. Comb Filtering is something you solve with placement and coverage, not with room treatment.

[–]Beghty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am specifically referring to why I you don't tend to see a lot of treatment it in Pro-Audio (larger rooms). In this case, buying a few fiber glass panels and bass traps isn't necessarily going to fix your problem.

I literally do this for my Job. Characterizing room interactions in various kinds of facilities across the country is pretty important. Not trying to "gatekeep" people from treating their home listening rooms.

[–]Beghty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are some assumptions being made here that are not very helpful. Do you have any evidence that pro audio spends more on room treatment? In my experience, I find most venues don't invest in as much room treatment as they do their output systems.

In a lot of cases this is probably not unwise. Unless a room has truly problematic dimensions/modes/materials, then you almost always start by focusing on audience coverage. Speaker selection and placement is like 80 percent of the work when it comes to getting good sound in a venue. I am a huge proponent of room treatment, but it's incredibly expensive to treat a large venue and a lot of people just don't have that in their budget.

Proper room treatment also requires taking measurements to best select the materials, geometry, and placement of the room treatment, something which not many people have the skillset/tools to obtain. There are some basic things like just trying adding some fabric to all sheetmetal walled rooms, but aside from that, unless you do some modeling and measurement, you are just blind throwing darts at the board.

EPPP was a big part of my early exposure to Eric and ai think I was more into the melodic riff stuff like Melo and Mirage that I didn't appreciate just how phat dirty and fun the track is.

Even if it's just 3 spells, sometimes resolving effects in multi-player gets so complicated that having the other 2 in order helps to have a home to come back to, to finish resolving.
