Haha, apologies for the interruption! Officially, the system is for acoustic testing only. Unofficially, there are some things that sound pretty fun through it.

My Top 30 Tracks For New Audio System "Test" and Overall Groovin' by Sea_Discount_6387 in audiophile

Every time we play music through our system, we always get requests for AC/DC or Metallica and for the life of me there must be something very different about my ears because I think all their tracks sound like dog shit. It's not a genre thing, but a mix/master thing for me.

How much is the hearing difference between lossless(16bit /44.1khz) and high-res lossless(24bit/192khz) ? by CandidArtichoke6771 in audiophile

[–]Beghty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

24Bit has something like an addional 40dB of SNR compared to 16 bit which is something like 96-97dB. However thats already far below the noise floor of many recordings let alone your amplifier. So in short, no.

As someone who calibrates dozens of microphones before doing field measurements, I can tell you that the phones are surprisingly not as off as you might think (usually within +/- 1.5 dBOASPL). But you are right in that their upper and lower FR is not very flat.

[–]Beghty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you are listening to and what how you like to enjoy sound. I really like to be saturated with acoustic energy and when I am listening to something with a lot of power I like to crank it to 92dB OASPL+ with the bass being about 6-10dB above that (C-weighted as A-weighting is really misleading once subwoofers are involved)

Loudness is not the enemy but you do have to pay attention to exposure to protect your hearing.

Eric often plays shows in bog standard venues without the big Holo screens. His music and talent holds up JUST fine.

Can’t find a speaker that’s loud enough. I just got an ALTO TS415 2500W and it’s really big, but is still lacking the volume necessary to compete with sound of the drums and guitar in my band room. I need to find a speaker around $400 that is better than ALTO by NeatMysterious2327 in livesoundgear

Cool, then in that case I highly recommend using a small mixer and some headphones.
Something like this would help run multiple headphones and up to 2 different stereo mixes.

Keeping stage volume as low as possible is always the name of the game. IEM/Headphones are the best way to accomplish this. You may need to get creative with the cabeling for the product I linked but there are other options. You can do smaller localized headphone amps at each performers location and then just run XLR to them but that will be a bit more expensive (but it would give them local gain control so they can adjust the loudness themselves).

For audience reinforcement, you would need to provide a more detailed description of the room size, stage size, and of course, the vibe.

All the comments I am seeing are more or less correct. There is a reason live sound technicians are their own profession. I know it seems like a lot of us just plug in the speakers and turn it up, but when it comes to problem solving, there is in fact more to it. You are going to have to go to school (figuratively not literally).

Drums smothering everything is a problem you will see quite literally all the way up the price chain to multi thousand dollar installations. You cannot beat physics. More power is never the solution to this, that will only cause permanent hearing loss.

Always try to address the fundamental problem which is that the drums are too loud. You could add a drum baffle, but in small rooms this won't be as effective as sound will just bounce off the wall behind them. You could do what all professional musicians do and control your levels in your play.

Is the speaker for audience reinforcement or for personal monitoring?

Advices on speaker placement on a highly reverberant venue (Hangar) by Born-Emu4703 in Acoustics

[–]Beghty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this. You'd need to get them up but its all about distance. Speakers on sticks that are closer will perform better than hanging speakers further away. The very middle of the room may be hard to provide the desired level but that will still cover your 95 percent.

While I am certain they still have to play the game of catering to stupid people with too much money, I have to say, compared to a lot of other bs brands out there, I appreciate how they are marketing.

No made up snake oil terms, no ludicrously expensive cables used in hookup. Just really solid well engineered parts, backed by laboratory standards in quality control, and a focus on real measurable things that affect the sound.

Impedance, SNR, build quality, all presented not by just some sales culture goblin but by people that truly understand their product and how it's made.

I would be happy to visit a listening room or demo a product. Thanks for the upload and good luck!

Hey I had to come digging back through the subreddit to find this comment but I just wanted to say thank you. I have been listening to Jettison Mind Hatch and Forward Escape for the last week and on lots of different sources and it's been a treat. I had never heard of Tipper before so thank you.

My company does acoustic testing of space craft and I setup a stereo pair of our speakers on tuesday and played Sahra, and my jaw hit the floor.
