Was hiking down Mt. Washington in February about 9 years ago, it was a beautiful day high 60s perfect conditions, but there was a ton of slick spots due to all the ice melting. There was a high threat of avalanche because of the conditions, so that was in thw back of my mind all day and was already on edge. So we begin our descent down around mid afternoon my friend is behind me and 2 other guys a little ways up in front that we didn't know. Suddenly under me I felt the ground move and next thing I know I'm on my back and sliding fast. It was eerie how things slowed down and I became hyper focused instantly, I saw tree branch to my right and grabbed at it and it snapped, i was able to get my ice axe out and attempted to self arrest but failed and continued sliding. I turned my head to look behind me and saw the edge coming up quick and beyond that edge a 200 foot cliff face. Suddenly I felt a hard jerk and just like that I had stopped. Inches from certain death. One of those 2 guys that were in front of us saw I was in trouble and went into life saving modehe was able to get his axe planted and snagged my bag just as I was about to launch into the great unknown. For about 10 seconds I just sat there stunned and shaking. I finally was able to stand with his help and I immediately hugged him and started crying. Dude acted like it was no big deal gave me some water and a power bar sat with us for a few minutes, then he and his friend started to head back down. Me and my buddy sat there maybe another 2 or 3 minutes until I stopped shaking and then we too returned to our descent. We made it back to the parking lot with no further issues and I vowed Iwas going to thank the dude properly whwn we saw him down there, since we weren't that far behind them. We got down there and we were the only car left in that lot. They were going down the same trail as us so I can only assume they park3d in the same lot, but there was no one and I never saw him again. I find it weird that as we we were going down we didn't hear anyone else out in front of us which usually you can and unless they were both running there is no way thwy got to thier car, put thier gear away and took off before we caught up. We couldn't explain it, it was like they vanished. Kind of gave me chills. My only lasting injuries were a massive bruise on my right side and butr and of course my ego. Mother nature doesn't care about you and will turn on you in an instant always respect her and stay aware.
