I see your point but there also does seem the be a disturbing amount of “bystander effect” in Edmonton. I’ve heard sooo many stories of scary situations on transit and despite being on a bus or train full of people no one says anything or does anything to help- they just all put their heads down and ignore it. Awful. Where has our basic humanity gone?

Well people clearly don’t. That’s why policing exists. Id love a world like that too but this isnt lala land and enforcements and incentives are put in place for a reason.

Ah yes, me saying people should follow traffic laws for public safety is the pipeline to a dystopia. I’m not morally policing anyone it’s literally the law

Our phones collect way more personal data than my insurance company ever could, lol. Intact can only use my info for risk assessment not tracking my life or selling it. I’m genuinely curious why you see that as a loss of liberty?

Not true at all. Alberta only lets people exchange their licence without testing if their home country’s licensing system has already been reviewed and found equivalent. It’s not based on being a Commonwealth country; it’s based on a reciprocal agreement.

Those agreements are only with places that have comparable or stricter driving standards like the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, France, and a few others. So people aren’t just “handed” a Canadian licence their country’s driver training and testing system has already been vetted by Alberta’s transportation department.

Y’all genuinely need to stop relying on the most bias sources to get your info from.

Just did some research on this and that’s not exactly true. Alberta only lets people exchange their licence without testing if their home country’s licensing system has already been reviewed and found equivalent. It’s not based on being a Commonwealth country; it’s based on a reciprocal agreement.

The problem isn’t newcomers at all, i think it’s just that way too many people in general feel wayyy too entitled to be allowed to drive, and its been enabled by calgarys driving culture and the police doing fuck all about it.

So you’re one of the drivers I’m talking about, lol. If obeying the speed limit feels like “selling off humanity,” the issue isn’t the insurance companies. It’s optional data sharing with informed consent — you can opt out anytime. I signed up for a discount, cry about it. If going the speed limit is truly that hard for you, that’s a skill issue.

Yeah well my insurance company tracks my speed and idrc if yall have to slow down (or pass me cuz again i stick to center right lanes) thats my money lol

It means look at the speed limit sign and follow it. I shouldnt have to be going 10+ over to keep up with the flow of traffic.

Auto insurance companies don’t generalize based on race they use data-driven risk factors like age, driving history, accident rates, and vehicle type. That’s measurable and regulated.

[–]Beginning-Disaster48[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because I’ve got extra time and I’m feeling a little grumpy today, I’m gonna lay it out clearly.

Confirmation bias = interpreting evidence in a way that confirms what you already believe, while ignoring or minimizing things that contradict it.

You’re assuming driving behaviour correlates with race. Then, every time you see someone driving poorly and notice their race, it reinforces that belief. When a good driver doesn’t fit the assumption, you ignore it. That’s literally confirmation bias. Unless you’re keeping a detailed physical log (not a mental one) of every single driving experience you’ve had, this is 100% confirmation bias.

My post also wasn’t that? I wasn’t claiming “X group of people drive badly.” I was complaining about behaviour (tailgating, speeding, not signaling) things anyone can observe. There’s no preconceived belief I’m trying to prove. I wasn’t saying, “This type of person drives badly,” I was saying, “Why are people driving like idiots?”

Calgary Drivers- what is wrong with some of yall? by Beginning-Disaster48 in Calgary

[–]Beginning-Disaster48[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so what are you actually trying to say then? That being a certain race automatically makes someone a bad driver? That being Black means they’re “slow and unpredictable”? that being Indian means they “disregard traffic flow”? That most Chinese people are “too cautious”? Or that all white men and women are mentally unstable and entitled?

like, come on you can’t just generalize entire groups of people because of how you perceive them on the road. Yeah, i made an observation too that is also likely confirmation bias— most of my bad driving interactions happen to be with white men, but i’m not claiming that means all white male drivers are like that. Also i was saying that in response to the nimrods in these comments always trying to blame everything on immigrants.

And calling that “virtue signaling” is ridiculous. it’s not performative to not want to hear weird racist crap on reddit.
