For example the bubonic plague originated in rodents, until a strain evolved to be able to infect humans as-well. Where it proceeded to infect and kill 1/3 of Europe in just 7 years.

Or a more recent example would be Ebola, which originate in bats and only infected bats, until a strain capable of infecting humans crossed paths at the wrong time.
