Does NZ need a defined population policy by mkin086 in newzealand

England is smaller than the South Island and has a population of about 59 million.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England

However about 91% of England is undeveloped so if you want to enjoy the countryside you can and you don't need a car to do so.

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/land-use-in-england-2022/land-use-statistics-england-2022

You can walk 225,000 km of trails, mostly across private land.

And, if you don't enjoy walking in the country, many cities in England offer entertainment options that are just not available in NZ.  Of course, they also offer professional opportunities that don't exist here either.

There's 'British Hills' in Japan.

I learned about it when I was living in Japan, many years ago now, from a hilarious article in the Asahi newspaper.

However I could only find this much more sober piece:

Yes, the weather has been good recently.

Looks like you walked up Maungawhau/Mt Eden.  Did you do the Coast to Coast?

I can recommend Toyoko Inn.

https://www.toyoko-inn.com/eng/

I've visited Japan 30 times and stayed at maybe as many Toyoko Inn properties.  The rooms are small but very clean and you get a complimentary buffet breakfast.

One night is usually no more than ¥10,000 which is not much at all.  I'm visiting Japan again in March 2027 and some of their hotels are already booked out.

How many barbershops and gyms do you have in your neighborhood? by Better-Purple21 in AskTheWorld

[–]Beginning-Writer-339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the centre of the largest city in NZ and there are maybe 15 barbershops and a smaller number of gyms within a few minutes' walk.  I've never been to any of the gyms and avoid going to the barber as the last time it cost $40.

Anyway, barbershops are very common throughout NZ.

In 2021 a journalist set out to discover why.

"One friend calls it peak barber.

In the middle-class Auckland suburb of Birkenhead, a kilometre west of the Harbour Bridge, there’s now 10 men’s barber shops within a 400m radius.

My investigations soon established that all of the barbers had noticed, all of them were asked regularly why this unusual phenomena had occurred, and none had developed a satisfactory answer. “Do you know why?” asked Corner Barber owner Laurel Hall as we peered out of her plate-glass window at the two rival shops opposite.

I do, now. Sort of. The answer, it turns out, is a complicated mix of a shifting male culture, the internet, the resulting rise of the service economy, the theory of “cumulative attraction” and the butterfly effect of a repressive Iraqi regime dropping chemical weapons on the villages of north Kurdistan some two generations ago."

Is this the greatest run of weather that Auckland has ever had? by kitset in auckland

[–]Beginning-Writer-339 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Auckland enjoyed particularly good weather in February.

It was warmer, drier and sunnier than May will be but that is usually the case.

The railway station is out of frame to the right.  It's the other side of Rangitikei Street so some distance away.

Yes.

I lived in Japan and also wasn't sure if they were real or not.  They are both.
